ALPHONSUS DE GUIMARAENS
(1870 – 1921)
Alphonsus de Guimaraens stood out within the
brazilian symbolist movement. Writing verses of
intense musicality he becomes, thus, one of the
most important mystic poets in the Portuguese
language. Spiritually different from Cruz e
Sousa, this Minas Gerais poet from Mariana
creates a calm, balanced poetry, full of a religious
acceptance of the setbacks of life.
Excerpt
Ismália
When Ismália went out of her mind,
She started dreaming up there in the tower...
She saw o moon in the sky,
She saw another moon in the sea.
In her vanished dreams,
She bathed her entire self in the moonlight...
She wished to arise up to the sky,
She wished to go down to the sea...
And, in her ravings,
She started singing up there in the tower... close
she was to the sky,
far she was from the sea...
And just Iike an angel she stretched out
Her wings to fly...
She was longing for the moon in the sky,
She was longing for the moon in the sea...
The wings God had given her
Fluttered together...
Her soul arose up to the sky,
Her body went down to the sea...
The amazing resonance of a work
"And precisely this highly qualified artistic painstaking will explain the permanence of Alphonsus de Guimaraens. And
more than permanence, this prolongation of Alphonsus in the admiration by our major poets."
(Eduardo Portella, O universo poético de Alphonsus de Guimaraens)
The equilibrium of a mystic
"Very rarely has this exuberant land seen, either in the geographical configuration or in the spiritual manifestations of the
countryman, such a balanced work as that by the great mystic from Minas Gerais."
