INTRODUÇÃO
Este breve catálogo com uma seleção de 50
autores com obras em domínio público visa dar
a conhecer uma multiplicidade de expressões da
cultura letrada brasileira, com suas diversidades
regionais e estilísticas. Embora a maior parte dos
autores selecionados integre o cânone da literatura
brasileira, buscou-se introduzir alguns valores que
estão à margem, incluindo um rol significativo de
escritoras que, mesmo no século XIX, romperam
um certo preconceito de gênero e firmaram-se no
campo das letras nacionais.
Mesmo com uma história relativamente recente,
a literatura e o pensamento social brasileiros
apresentam uma riqueza apreciável, nascida
da singular formação cultural brasileira, cujo
mosaico variadíssimo, cada vez mais, desperta
interesse no concerto das nações.
Este catálogo oferece as referências dos autores
em ordem alfabética de seus nomes literários,
com perfil biográfico resumido, principais
obras, breve resenha crítica e um curto excerto
de sua obra mais conhecida. Foram utilizadas
fontes bibliográficas, indicadas nos verbetes,
mas a matriz deste trabalho, para boa parte dos
autores selecionados, foi o Guia conciso de autores
brasileiros, organizado pelos professores Alberto
Pucheu e Caio Meira, em 2002, para a Fundação
Biblioteca Nacional.
Assim, agradecemos à equipe de pesquisadores
que trabalharam, nesta edição e na anterior, para
alcançarmos este resultado que, como qualquer
seleção, é sempre um recorte e, como tal, mesmo
utilizando critérios objetivos, expressa sempre
algum grau de subjetividade e como tal corre o
risco de ter cometido erros. Críticas serão bemvindas
e poderão ser úteis em futuras reedições.

Introduction
This abridged catalog with a selection of fifty
authors with works in public domain aspires to
make known a number of different expressions
and voices of Brazilian literate culture, with its
regional and stylistic diversities. Although most
of the selected authors belong to the established
canon of Brazilian literature, one sought to
introduce some assets who are on its margins,
including a significant number of female writers
who, as early as the 19th century, faced gendercentered
prejudice, and established themselves on
the national literary fields.
Even taking into account its relatively recent
history, Brazilian literature and social thought
offer an admirable richness, spawning from the
country’s unique cultural formation, whith its
extremely varied mosaic arousing more and more
interest within the concert of the nations.
This catalog presents the selected authors in
alphabetical order according to their literary
names, with a short biographical profile, a brief
review and a small excerpt from their best known
works. The bibliographical sources are indicated
on the entries, but the most fundamental source
of this work comes from the Brazilian Authors
Concise Guide, organized by professors Alberto
Pucheu and Caio Meira, in 2002, for the National
Library Foundation.
Therefore, we thank the team of researchers who
worked on this and on the previous edition in order
to have achieved this result. As in any selection,
one always has to deal with choices and, as such,
even using objective criteria, it always expresses
some degree of subjectivity, and the chance of
making mistakes is forever present. Criticisms are
welcome as we see this type of initiative as an ongoing
process.
