VEEGUM ® Ultra – A Step Beyond The Usual
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate
Unique Acid pH White Smectite Clay
VEEGUM Ultra is a step beyond the usual clay-based emulsion and suspension stabilizers. It is a fast
hydrating water-washed smectite clay that provides white, acid pH dispersions, while providing all the
benefits of conventional smectite clay products. INCI name: Magnesium Aluminum Silicate.
Easy to Hydrate – Designed to be efficiently incorporated into water, VEEGUM Ultra disperses easily
and hydrates rapidly. With conventional smectite clays, the degree of clay hydration is directly
proportional to the amount of energy used to disperse the product. The degree of hydration therefore
increases as mixing time, mixing intensity or water temperature increase. VEEGUM Ultra, however, is
relatively unaffected by changes in these mixing factors. As shown in the following table, adequate
hydration can be achieved quickly, even when using room temperature water and a slow-speed
propeller mixer.
VEEGUM Ultra
Water Mixer Type Mixer Speed Minimum Suggested Mixing
25°C Homogenizer 3000 10 minutes
25°C Propeller 800 15 minutes
75°C Propeller 800 10 minutes
pH Optimized – VEEGUM Ultra is the first and only cosmetic grade smectite clay with an acid pH.
Buffering is usually not required when VEEGUM Ultra is used to stabilize and thicken personal care
formulations.
White and Bright – Dispersions of VEEGUM Ultra are true white. VEEGUM Ultra will not affect the
desired whiteness or shading of emulsion or suspension products.
Synergistic with Gums and Polymers – VEEGUM Ultra is an anionic clay compatible with most
anionic and nonionic ingredients and certain cationic materials. It can be cohydrated with common
anionic thickeners such as carbomer, xanthan gum and CMC. The clay and thickener may be dry
blended and added to the hydration water simultaneously. These mixtures produce rheology synergism
and can thereby be used to finely tailor the viscosity and stability of topical products. VEEGUM Ultra
also beneficially modifies the texture and feel of these compositions.
Recommended for All Topicals – VEEGUM Ultra is recommended as a suspension stabilizer,
emulsion optimizer and thickener for all topical products. It is especially effective in products formulated at
acidic pH, requiring little or no buffering while optimizing color and stability.
