Subfamília CRYPTINAE (Cryptidae Kirby, 1837; Thomson, 1873; Cryptoidae Förster, 1868; Cryptinae, Cameron, 1885; Cresson, 1887; Cryptidae Thomson, 1888; Cryptinae Ashmead, 1900, Dalla Torre, 1901; Schmiedeknecht, 1908; Gelinae Townes, 1951; Cryptinae Walkley, 1958). 11. Caracteres, etc. - Nesta subfamília a aréola alar varia consideràvelmente de aspecto; ora é pentagonal (fig. 6) fechada, ora aberta (fig. 2), ou mesmo desaparece completamente (fig. 8). Fig. 6 - Asas de Cryptus persimilis Cresson, 1864 (Cryptinae), segundo desenho de Pratt (1945, est. 3); nomenclatura das nervuras e células, segundo Rohwer & Gahan (1916) (Neide Guitton cóp.). A subfamília pode ser confundida com Ichneumoninae, todavia dela se distingue pelo caráter seguinte, peculiar a todos os Criptineos, salientado por ASHMEAD (1900): a presença de um sulco longitudinal pleuro-esternal mesotorácico, as vêzes pontuado ou crenulado, situado na parte inferior da mesopleura, separando-a do mesosterno.
