Kjærulf became a merchant, and that he was later "rådmann" (somethingclose to deputy mayor) of the new town from 1687 until his death in1696. The fact that each of his sons inherited 1391 "Rdl" (riksdaler,unit of currency used until 1875) indicates that he had be<strong>com</strong>e veryprosperous. He had 9 sons. In those times the daughters did notinherit anything.Morten Olsen Kjærulf was married twice. We do not know the name ofhis first wife. The second, Karen Andersdatter Dedekam, who was bornin Kristiansand in 1659 and died in 1741, was the daughter of deputymayor Anders Tønnesen and Karen Hansdatter Spinche. He had 14children by these two wives. Most of them settled in Kristiansand andthe surrounding area, and in this manner the Kjærulf family soonspread out across the country. At that time anyone in Norway who wanted to be admittedto an institution of higher education had to travel to Copenhagen.Antonius Mortensen began studying in 1703, received his degree intheology in 1707, amd in 1710 was appointed pastor for Hyllested andVendeslev of the Sorø district in Denmark. He wanted to return toNorway, however, and in 1715 he applied for the position as pastorfor Øjestad, not, as he wrote, "for any reasons of worldly advantage,but so that I can more easily <strong>com</strong>fort my grieving mother, who is nowa widow." He did not receive the position at that time.In 1716 he received a "Magistergrad" (today, approximately equal to adoctorate in the U.S.), and the same year he was "called" to thepastorate at South Øjestad, arriving there in 1717. In 1720 he became"prost" (pastor in charge of several parishes in an area) for Nedenes.He was married in Denmark in 1716 to Margrethe Numsen, who was bornin 1680 and died in 1727, the daughter of Major Corfitz Numsen andhis wife, the widow of the former pastor of Hyllested and Vendslev,
