For several years he was a herder for thousandsof sheep in the Nevada desert, alone with some dogs. When the sheep were to be butcheredin the fall, he went to San Francisco, CA, where he was with his cousins, Thyra andBondrup Klitgaard; lived as a member of the family, played piano, used money and was “Grand Seigneur.”In 1929 he went to Denmark, during the voyage he became the lover of aGerman countess who went to Aalborg with him. They lived at the Phønix Hotel for a while. Then he took up residence in Blokhus, from where he traveled around the country and“gave to the count” (possible typo, may mean “gave to the countess”), and used the moneyhe brought with him plus about twelve thousand crowns he inherited from his father. His sister KAREN (Mrs. Smith) had to give him money to get back to the US on.The merchant Niels Bondrup Klitgaard in Ulsted can remember that inHolstebro he rented an extra train, locomotive and car – the train connection to Aalborgdid not suit him. During a stay in Ulsted he consumed a bottle of whiskey every day,he rolled his own cigarettes, he threw the stumps and the torn off matches on the floor.15f.
