Once she and four of the children traveled by train fromDenmark to Marseille to meet the ship there. The ship was in the harbor, but Captain Klitgaard was in jail.There was (as now) some war nonsense in Tunis, and Klitgaard was suspected of being a Spanishor Portuguese spy. With the help of the consulate, however, Sophie got him out quickly. Sophie Amaliewas very musical and very gifted in song and language, and while they lived in Newcastle she was anorganist in a seamen’s church. She is buried in Hals, and there is a very beautiful stone with her portraitin bronze relief. The captain’s ashes were, in accordance with his own wishes, spread out in thesea north of Skagen, where the North Sea, the Skaggerak, and the Kattegat meet. They had 11 children15a. He spent his boyhood yearsin Hals, and the healthy boy became friends with boys who were sent to boarding school at the homeof the head of the school, who was the pastor in Hals. They got into a lot of mischief –the pastor had an older servant girl who named Trine who got the church ready for Sundayservices every Saturday evening. One winter evening when she finished her work in the sacristy,she went up to the pulpit with a carafe of water. Nørdstjerne had hidden himself on the stairsunder a white sheet – the other boys had hidden themselves between the pews. When Trinecame to the stairs, Nørdstjerne stuck out his bare foot and said “Kiss my foot; I am Pilate.”
