They were 1 st cousins, Thyra was the daughter and 1 st child ofCaptain 14d CHRISTEN JULIUS KLITGAARD IJens took over his father’s business in Hals, but eventually there were retail merchants insteadof provisions dealers in the neighboring towns of Ulsted, Hou, and Gandrup, and business decreased. The butter trade stopped when the cooperative dairies started. In 1901 he sold the businessand went to Canada with his family, where he purchased a farm near Winnipeg. In 1902 he soldthe farm and went to San Francisco, where he ran a restaurant until 1906, when the house burnedin the earthquake. During 1907-08, he went to Alaska alone to dig for gold, but came back home poor, sick and broken. He worked at different things and later became involved in community work. They enjoyed their children and grandchildren a great deal. When their daughter, SOPHIE, died in 1918,he and his wonderful wife (Aunt THYRA E K) took her 4 children, and when the oldest son,THOMAS, got divorced from his wife, their son also made his home with them.It was a very hospitable home, where many Danes gathered, and in 1934 (?) Aunt THYRA receiveda well deserved free trip to Rebild fest from the Danish Society. It was a great experience. At the party in KILDEN in Aalborg, she was named the town’s honorary mayor for the dayand received the town’s golden key. (Pastor Kaj Munk and his wife Thyra were the evening’ssplendid speakers. Kaj Munk is famous for standing up at the pulpit and speaking out againstthe Nazis during the occupation of Denmark in World War II. His outspokenness cost him his life.)A bit of a correction to pass on – in the Eskild Klitgaard book THE FAMILY KLITGAARD FROM BLOKHUS,he notes that the home of Thyra Eureka Klitgaard and her 1 st cousin/husband Jens Christian Bondrup Klitgaard, was burned in the fires caused by the 1906 earthquake. But in reading their son’s autobiography, it is clearthat this is not correct – perhaps what Eskild meant was the building in which Bondrup’s saloon/restaurantwas housed burned down – this seems very likely. I know from first-hand accounts of descendantsthat the house on Douglass Street still stands today.9 children16a. CHRISTEN JULIUS KLITGAARD I b. 11 October 1887, d. 12 October 1887.16b.
