As a fact, he actually started on his career as amusic teacher and composer of songs before ever having seriously studiedmusic at all, and not for ten years did he attract any particular notice.Then, however, his Government paid for a years instruction for him atLeipzig. For many years after his return to Norway Kjerulf tried in vain toestablish serial classical concerts, while he himself was working withBjornson and other writers at the composition of lyrical songs. His famerests almost entirely on his beautiful and manly national partsongs andsolos; but his pianoforte music is equally charming and simple.
