However, as a minimum, there should be at least onesmoke alarm fitted to the ceiling between the bedroom and the living room orthe kitchen. Most fires break out in the living room or in the kitchen whilst weare sleeping. If the bedrooms are situated in several different areas in the home, more smoke alarms should be installed. Recommended max. distance betweentwo alarms is 10 m. In a house with more than one floor, there should be atleast one smoke alarm on each floor. It is important to test that the smoke alarmcan be easily heard from every bedroom. If necessary, a smoke alarm should beinstalled in the bedroom. The smoke alarm should be placed in the middle of theceiling, at least 0,5 m from a wall or corner.Do not install smoke alarms in the following locations1. In a kitchen or a bathroom. Smoke from cooking or baking can result in falsealarms.2. Close to an air duct or extractor fan. They can extract the smoke thuspreventing the smoke alarm from operating correctly.3. In a garage where naturally combustible particles can result in false alarms.4. In a room with great temperature fluctuations (between 0 – 40 degrees Celsius)and/or high air humidity (max. 85 % relative air humidity).5. Close to electric installations with fluorescent lighting.6. In the top of a roof ridge or other places where the air may become stagnant.Apartment / detached house:In a large apartment with a long corridor at least two smoke alarms should beinstalled as smoke spreads in a hall.Smoke alarmLivingroomDiningroomBedroomKitchenHallBack stairsToiletFront stairsLiving roomKitchenHouse / terraced houseIn houses with more than one floor a smoke alarm should be installed on eachfloor as smoke rises.Bedroom Landing BedroomKitchenLiving roomDining roomHallMountingThe smoke alarm should be fitted using the enclosedmounting bracket, which is to be mounted in theceiling with one screw only (screw and plug for 5 mmdrill enclosed – please use a special plug for plasterceilings).HallWhen the bracket is fixed, the smoke alarm is attachedwith a click.
