Generell informasjon
SAM5141 will provide an understanding of religion and migration. During the past three to four decades, the migration from
non-Western countries has changed the religious landscapes of the West. Many immigrant religious communities are, in turn, shaped
by the existing churches and religious organizations in the host societies. As many migrants and their descendants have demanded
equal opportunities and a place for their religion in the public sphere, fundamental arrangements between church and state are
challenged in Europe. Although the separation between church and state in the United States results in a different situation, immigrant
religious communities also alter American religion and values. The relation between religion and migration will be discussed in light of
studies from Europe and the United States.
Studiekrav
To complete the course, the student have to:
- Write a book report of between 1,200 and 2,000 words from a limited part of the course syllabus. The topic of the report is selected in
cooperation with the professor and is graded pass/fail
- Participate in the evaluation of the curriculum and/or of the learning environment, if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term.
Avsluttende vurdering
In order to pass SAM5141 the student must fulfill all the requirements and pass the written exam (6 hrs). The exam is assessed with
grades (A-F).
Mål og innhold
The goal of this course is to understand the relation between migration and religion and possible effects on immigrant religions and the
host societies.
The students will demonstrate the following skills:
- To discuss theories of assimilation, integration, and multiculturalism
- To demonstrate knowledge of immigrant religions in the West
- To understand how host societies form immigrant religions
- To demonstrate knowledge of the implications that religious diversity has in Europe and the United States
- To understand the political and religious challenges that characterize multi-religious societies
