Generell informasjon<br />

This is a required core course in the degree programme Master of Religion, Society and Global Issues. MET5010 provides an overview<br />

over research methods in the empirical study of religion at master level. It enables the students to critically understand social research,<br />

and helps them in designing their own master thesis. The course addresses issues of research design, strategy, methods of collecting<br />

and analyzing data and research quality and ethics. It consists of lectures and practical exercises. The course literature and lectures<br />

are in English.<br />

Studiekrav<br />

To be qualified for final assessment, the student must:<br />

- Write a book report up to 2,000 words from a limited part of the course syllabus. The topic of the report is selected in cooperation with<br />

the professor and is graded pass/fail.<br />

- Participate in the evaluation of the course<br />

Avsluttende vurdering<br />

To gain credits for the course MET5010 the student must fulfil all the requirements and pass the written exam (6 hrs). The exam is<br />

assessed with grades A-F.<br />

Mål og innhold<br />

On completion of the course, the students shall:<br />

- have discussed different research designs and strategies<br />

- have acquired critical knowledge enabling them to select suitable method for their master thesis<br />

- have aquired an overview of the research process when using observation, qualitative interviews and document analysis<br />

- have conducted a research interview, done field observation and document analysis<br />

- have aquired an overview over quantitative methods and concepts<br />

- have aquired an overview of different approaches to data analysis<br />

- be familiar with different approaches in evaluating the quality of research<br />

- have reflected over ethical aspects of doing research<br />
