Th e dunes
Horse-riding is forbidden in the dunes.
Beach
Horse-riding is allowed on the beach, except during the Easter holidays, the
Whitsun holidays and in the period between 1 June and 15 September.
During these periods horse-riding is only allowed in the following zones :
- between 7.30 pm and midnight between the wave breaker of Paul Houyouxstraat
and Zeedijk no. 300 (hotel ‘Bellevue’)
- between 7.30 pm and midnight between the wave breaker of Strandlaan and
Nieuwpoort
Ride as near to the water as possible.
Fishermen on horseback or mounted policemen are exempted from these regulations.
Obligatory registration number
Every horse entering the beach must have a registration number. Th is number has
to be visible both on the left and on the right side of the saddlecloth. Th e number
consists of the letter ‘MI’ and an identifi cation number and is black on a white background.
Th e black letters must be at least 5 cm high. Th e registration numbers can be
obtained from the secretarial offi ce at the town hall. It costs € 12,50. Riding stables
can issue registration numbers as well.
Public road
Horse-riding on public roads is allowed if the rider is 14 or older. Riders from the
age of 12 and up can also use the public roads, but only if they are accompanied by
a rider who is at least 21 years old. If a riding school organises a guided ride, at least
one of the guides must be 16 or older. It is forbidden to gallop within the built-up
area. Persons accompanying or riding mounts are responsible for the removal of the
droppings of these animals.
