PORTUGAL NORMAL

The concept of Portugal Normal is

based on a certain idea of normality

and departs from a survey of useful,

functional, accessible and timeless

design objects of national industrial

production and which, although

ubiquitous in Portugal, have little

visibility across borders. This

specific way of looking at design

originated with Das gewöhnliche Design,

an exhibition which took place in

Darmstadt, Germany in 1976, and

was developed further through the

Super Normal exhibitions and publications

organized by Jasper Morrison

and Naoto Fukasawa since 2006.

Recently the idea of elevating

normality to an object of desire has

also motivated a number of designers

and brands who seek to curate or

produce well-designed and well-manufactured

objects. These have material

and aesthetic qualities deriving from

a clarification process that is first

functional, and related with the means

of production, but that eventually

translates into formal simplicity. This

restraint is recognizable in an almost

emotional way as normal objects

are those which we feel familiar and

comfortable with.

Portugal Normal is a selection of

normal historical objects, continuously

produced in various materials,

of Portuguese origin or manufacture,

in parallel with a careful selection

of objects designed by contemporary

Portuguese designers, which

demonstrate common characteristics

and a similar potential: that of being

able to make part of the Portuguese

culture and collective memory. The

experimental organization of these

objects in groups by material, colour,

typology or form, aims to create

relations of proximity that reveal

the unique characteristics of each

selected object, presenting relatively

undiscovered Portuguese designers,

producers and manufacturers to a

critical and attentive audience.

ABOUT

Portugal Normal is organized by AICEP Portugal Global – Trade & Investment

Agency, in collaboration with the Embassy of Portugal in Copenhagen and

curated by Ricardo Gomes of KWY.studio.

Ricardo Gomes

Born in Coimbra, Portugal in 1978 and studied architecture in Lisbon between

1995 and 2001. Worked at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa between 2002 and

2004. From 2005 to 2011 he worked with the artist Olafur Eliasson in Berlin.

Between 2011 and 2014 he was an assistant professor at the UDK in Berlin and

between 2015 and 2017 he taught art at DIS Copenhagen. He lives in Lisbon and

Copenhagen.

KWY.studio

A multidisciplinary platform investigating the nature of collaboration within

the context of specific projects, KWY was founded in 2009 by architects Ben

Allen and Ricardo Gomes in Berlin, and curator and editor James Bae in Los

Angeles. KWY’s projects are collaborations between the principals and invited

specialists. Recent collaborators include artists, writers, curators, educators and

designers. With few initial preconceptions, each project begins with dialogue

and analysis between the collaborators. This process-oriented methodology often

leads to diverse thoughts that are otherwise unexpected and unimaginable.

AICEP

AICEP Portugal Global - Trade & Investment Agency is a government

business entity, focused on encouraging the best foreign companies to invest in

Portugal and contributing to the success of Portuguese companies abroad in their

internationalization processes or export activities. AICEP works daily to ensure

that Portugal is even more global and its economy more competitive.

AICEP and Ricardo Gomes would like to express their gratitude to those who

have made crucial contributions towards the realisation of this project: Ambassador

Rita Laranjinha and the Portuguese Embassy staff; Helga David, Carlos Moura,

Cristina Gois Amorim, Rodrigo Marques, João Sequeira, Sara Santos (AICEP);

Luise Marter, Sara Cálem, Rui Alves, Anna Panourgia (KWY.studio); Manuel

Amaral Netto (Photography); José Machado (Installation).
