‘I just didn’t
realize that
something
like
Broadway
existed’
I can imagine the people watching Nashville at
home might be a bit conservative, because it’s about
the country music scene. Did you get any negative
responses from viewers, about your storyline on
Nashville?
‘Yeah, but very few in relationship to how many people
loved the message and needed to hear that. But you’re
right, the show does reach a lot of people who still live
in these ultra conservative parts of our country. It’s still
helpful for them to see normal gay people on TV. I’ve
gotten a few nasty tweets from people, but we’re talking
maybe one out of a hundred, or a thousand. Very few.’
The underlying theme of Pippin is about how far you
will go in life to make something of yourself. Did you
feel you have to go far to be where you are today?
‘I think it’s about what you’re willing to give up to be
extraordinary. In my chosen eld of work, you do
give up a lot. Holidays, for instance. When the rest of
the world is off, that’s usually when I work the most.
I’ve rarely spent Christmas or birthdays or any major
holidays with my own family. And that stinks! I love
living in New York City, but it’s far away from Arkansas.
It’s hard to see my family and people that I love that
much. So you give up a lot of relationships that are very
important and special to you, to be happy in your line
of work. That’s the rst thing I always think of, that I’ve
had to give up in a lot of ways.’

thing to do. So I can’t wait to go to the art museums in
Amsterdam. It’s on top of my list.’
And will we be able to spot you wandering around a
Gamma or Praxis? Isn’t that what you did when you
were here last time?
[laughs] ‘Probably! I love that place! I spent hours in
there! Everybody thought that was so funny!’
It kind of is!
‘Well, that place is my porn. I loved it. I could have spent
an entire day at Gamma. First of all, all the products are
different to when you go to the American equivalent,
which would be Home Depot. Everything here is just
crap, we have everything made in China. Something
like an Italian faucet or an Italian sink is really, really
expensive here. But you guys have your own European
versions of things, that would cost a million dollars in
the States, and at Gamma it’s like 90 Euros. And I’m
fascinated with your plumbing. It’s so different as well!
So I want to gure it all out, I want to see how it works,
I want to buy stuff there and bring it back home. I’m
going to buy out an entire Gamma and ship it to the
States.’
But is it worth it?
‘For me it is, because I’m doing something that I love.
I don’t have regrets in that regard. I try my best to see
these people when I can, and milk every moment for
what it’s worth while it’s happening. And that’s what
you do.’
I’ve been told that you’re a ‘ipper’ [someone who
buys a house or apartment, redecorates it and then
sells it for a prot, see also the Will & Grace episode
Flip-Flop - ed.]. Is that true?
Pippin will be playing at Carré for ve weeks,
starting March 9th.

Gamma
is my
porn’
‘Well, I don’t always ip them. I mainly live in them. But
yes, I do, it’s my hobby. I’ve renovated a country house,
and I’ve done three apartments here in New York City.’
So you’re on Nashville, doing Broadway shows left and
right, you’ve got your own show as well, and you’re
ipping houses. Do you have any time for a love life as
well?
‘Yes, I do! I’m actually getting married this year. I’m
going to get married in California, it’s going to be a very
very small ceremony, just my family.’
How are you planning on spending your free time in
Amsterdam?
‘When I was there the last two times, I’ve been so busy
doing press things, that I haven’t gotten to go to any
