Op 14 mei 1987 sprak hij als Landeskonservatorvan Nord-Rhein Westfalen inde Beurs van Berlage over Monumenten vanbedrijf en techniek in de deelstaat Nordrhein-Westfalen. Hij vergeelek toen de positie vanNordrhein-Westfalen in Duitsland met die vanEngeland in Europa. Nergens in West-Duitslanden in de gebieden die thans tot de DDRen Polen behoren, hebben de economische entechnische ontwikkelingen tot zulke drastischewijzigingen in de geografische gebouwde ensociale structuren geleid als juist in het Nordrhein-Westfaalseagglomeratiegebied. Delandsregering toonde zich al in 1970 bewustvan de ontwikkeling. In 1987 sprak hij nogover het begrip ‘monument van bedrijf entechniek’, inventarisatie en documentatie, documentatiemiddelenen publiciteit.InleidingOver the last thirty years, the care for monumentsof technology and industry has – withan early start in Great Britain – unfoldedthroughout Europe. From isolated, rathersmall objects, the development went towardsintegrated areas such as harbours, steel worksor coal mines. Furthermore, since about thelate 1980ies, networks sprung to life, linkingrelated objects in an area or of a comparablekind together. Several „routes“ were developed,such as the „Route Industriekultur“ inthe Ruhrgebiet, or a newer one in the Rhein-Main-area. Historic industrial spaces, such asLiverpool´s Albert dock for example have beenmade the starting point for redevelopment ofwhole cityscapes, likewise in the textile heritageof the Lille region. The lecture will give ashort overview of these developments.15
