Dell: bumpy ride into retail
Shipment delay problems plaguing Dell
may be worse than expected, with a
shortage for the company’s consumer
notebook models likely to last into
October or November. Retail channels
in the Asia-Pacific region are all caught
in a shortage of the consumer models,
indicating that Dell’s initial thrust into
the channel market is rather bumpy.
With the company indicating painting
problems as one of the main reasons for
the long delays in the shipping of its
XPS M1330 models, Dell Taiwan recently
invited media in Taiwan to visit
its lab to explain its quality control in
the painting of the notebooks.
It is a difficult task for Dell to try to offer
a range of eight colors for the cases,
as compared to Sony’s latest CR-series
notebooks, which are available only in
four colors. Dell’s Asia-Pacific headquarters
said that the company is focusing
on improving the situation and will
deliver the products to customers as
soon as possible.
ASRock pushes low price
motherboard
ASRock has launched its
ConRoe1333-series motherboards
featuring FSB support up to 1333MHz.
ASRock adopts the Intel 945GC A2
stepping chipset for the series. Although
Intel’s official maximum FSB support
for the chipset is only up to 800MHz,
ASRock has been able to reach
1333MHz allowing the motherboards to
support the new Core 2 Duo
E6050-series processors. The
ConRoe1333-series have channel prices
in China around US$58-65.
Asus rated as most
valuable Taiwan brand
Asus, the brand owned by Asustek
Computer, has been appraised to be the
largest Taiwan-based global brand with
a brand value of US$1.196 billion, according
to the government-sponsored
Taiwan External Trade Development
Council (TAITRA) at a ceremony to
award the top-10. The top-10 Taiwan-based
global brands this year have
a total value of US$6.74 billion, growing
by 31% from 2006. While the government
has set a goal of creating at least
five Taiwan-based global brands
each worth over US$1 billion in 2012,
there are four such brands this year. The
appraisal of brand value is based on Business
Week’s brand evaluation system
for the world’s top-100 brands.

Intel to push new
technology with X38
Intel is developing two new technologies
which will be introduced along
with the high-end X38 chipset, according
to motherboard makers. Both technologies
target the enthusiast market.
The two new technologies are named
Extreme Memory and Extreme Tuning
Utility. Both new marketing lead architectures
will be introduced with the
X38 in October. Extreme Memory
will function similar to nVidia’s SLI
Memory allowing specially branded
and certified memory modules to operate
at higher performance levels
when installed in a supporting motherboard.
Extreme Memory technology
will only be available for DDR3 modules
and will not support DDR2. In addition
to X38 and P35 chipsets for desktops,
the next-generation Intel 3-series
notebook Centrino platform will also
support Extreme Memory. Intel’s Extreme
Tuning Utility technology will provide
an interface to enable the changing
of BIOS settings directly from within
the operating system, making it easier
to tweak settings and overclock the system.
Intel partners have the option to
customize the interface of the software.
Infineon divests
interest in
Qimonda
Infineon Technologies
has specified the divestiture
of its interest in
Qimonda. Accordingly,
Infineon aims to reduce
its stake in Qimonda to
significantly below
50%. Any cash inflow
from such sales is to be
used for selective acquisitions
to strengthen
Infineon’s business or to repurchase
Infineon shares. ‘Carving-out and listing
our memory business in 2006 created
two focused companies, each with clear
prospects. With today’s decision, we are
gaining another option to reduce our stake
and are increasing the flexibility regarding
the speed of the reduction. At
the same time we are strengthening both
companies and accommodating the interests
of our shareholders,’ said Dr Wolfgang
Ziebart, president and CEO of Infineon.
Quanta and Compal:
strong notebook
shipments
Quanta and Compal both saw their revenues
grow over 50% on year in the first
seven months of this year on strong notebook
shipments. Quanta revenues totaled
NT$365.99 billion (US$11.1 billion),
up 53.6% on year, whereas Compal
revenues expanded 58% on year to
NT$233.89 billion. Quanta shipped 2.8
million notebooks in July, bring the total
notebook shipments for the first seven
months to 16.4 million units. Compal
shipped over two million notebooks in
July, a monthly shipment, notebook
shipments climbed 83% on year to more
than 10 million in the first half of the
year.
