Your total solution provider ...
Danfoss Semco has the experience and technological knowledge to provide you with fire fighting
solutions designed in accordance with IMO/SOLAS regulations and many classification societies and
national authorities. Our team specialises in meeting your specifications, no matter how specific, to
supply precisely the system you need.
sem-safe® Water mist system The SEM-SAFE® Water Mist System is unique.
Water is forced through micro nozzles at very high pressure to create a water mist with the most
effective fire fighting drop size distribution. The extinguishing effects give optimum protection by
cooling, due to heat absorption, and inerting due to the expansion of water by approximately
1,700 times when it evaporates.
The SEM-SAFE® Water Mist System provides better protection for personnel and surroundings and
minimises potential water damage, as the majority of the water mist evaporates. The SEM-SAFE®
Water Mist System is available for accommodation, total flooding, local applications and deep fat
fryers, and also as a high pressure or low pressure system.
high and low pressure co2 systems CO2 systems are used as total flooding
systems in engine rooms, machinery spaces and cargo holds. The high pressure system consists of
a number of CO2 cylinders, whose outlets are connected to a common manifold. From there, the
CO2 is directed, via selector valves, into the various protected spaces. If the protected space is
large, a high number of cylinders are required. These can be replaced by a single CO2 tank, saving
approximately 50% in weight and installation costs. The tank contains CO2 cooled to -18 °C. The tank,
refrigerators, distribution valves, controls, etc., are supplied pre-wired and ready assembled on a
steel frame.
Foam Fire Extinguishing System Foam used in fire protection is an aggregate
of air-filled bubbles formed from aqueous solutions, and is of lower density than the lightest
flammable liquids. It is mainly used to form a coherent floating blanket on flammable and
combustible liquids to prevent or extinguish fires by excluding air and cooling the fuel. It then
prevents re-ignition by suppressing the formation of flammable vapours, and also adheres to
surfaces, providing a degree of exposure protection from adjacent fires. Foam can be used as a fire
prevention, control or extinguishing agent for flammable liquid in tanks or processing areas.
dry chemical powder fire extinguishing system When introduced
directly to a fire, dry chemical powder extinguishes flames almost immediately. Dry chemical
powder is intended for use in extinguishing fires involving bulk chemical agents and liquefied
gases. Our dry systems are developed to meet the increasing demand for large capacity systems
for the protection of ships carrying LNG/LPG and certain chemicals or agents in bulk.
– high pressure water mist system

For centuries, water has been used to fight fires. In 1806, the first patent was filed in London describing a perforated
pipe concept for a fire protection system. This was followed in 1860 by the first sprinkler patent. Later, more
advanced sprinkler heads were developed, including bulbs. The common feature of this development was the use
of water as a fire fighting medium for cooling the fire.

High-Pressure Water Mist System
The intelligent use of water
For a fire to survive, it relies on the presence of the three elements of the ‘fire triangle’: oxygen, heat and combustible
material. The removal of any one of these elements will extinguish a fire. A high-pressure water mist system goes
further. It attacks two elements of the fire triangle: oxygen and heat.
Oxygen
The very small droplets in a high-pressure water mist
system quickly absorb so much energy that the droplets
evaporate and transform from water to steam, because
of the high surface area relative to the small mass of
water. This means that each droplet will expand more
than 1700 times, when getting close to the combustible
material, whereby oxygen and combustible gasses will
be displaced from the fire, meaning that the combusting
process will increasingly lack oxygen.
HEAT
To fight a fire, a traditional sprinkler system spreads
water droplets over a given area, which absorb heat
to cool the room. Due to their large size and relatively
small surface, the main part of the droplets will not
absorb enough energy to evaporate, and they quickly
fall to the floor as water. The result is a limited cooling
effect.
By contrast, high-pressure water mist consists of very
small droplets, which fall more slowly. Water mist
droplets have a large surface area relative to their mass
and, during their slow descent towards the floor, they
absorb much more energy. A great amount of the water
will follow the saturation line and evaporate, meaning
that water mist absorbs much more energy from the
surroundings and thus the fire.
That’s why high-pressure water mist cools more efficiently
per litre of water: up to seven times better than
can be obtained with one litre of water used in a traditional
sprinkler system.
Conclusion
The uniqueness of water mist is that it combines the suppression effect of gas and traditional sprinkler systems.
As well as removing the oxygen like a gas system, it simultaneously cools the fire like a traditional sprinkler. The
cooling effect additionally lowers the risk of re-ignition.

The Sem-Safe® System Design
The Sem-Safe® Water Mist System is a unique fire fighting system. By forcing water at a high pressure
through micro nozzles, an extremely fine mist is created.
Water is supplied via a pump unit. For every ship type, the Sem-Safe® pump unit can supply all water mist
applications. This is beneficial because you only need one unit for all applications, and it is easy to add more
sections and applications, if needed. In addition, servicing of only one unit is easier and less costly.
Sem-Safe® Pump Unit
Engine room, Total Flooding and Local Application Accommodation Deep Fat fryer and Duct in Galley
Sem-Safe® Water Mist System – for accommodation areas. On stand-by, the system
maintains a pipe pressure of approx. 12 bars. When the temperature exceeds a given level – for example, 57 °C
– the heat-sensitive glass bulbs mounted in the nozzle heads melt. At this point, the high-pressure pump is
automatically activated and water is forced through micro-nozzles at very high pressure (100 bar) to create a
fine mist. Importantly, only those nozzles with melted bulbs are actually activated. This means that only the
heat-affected area will be sprayed.
Sem-Safe® Water Mist System – For engine rooms. On stand-by, the system has dry piping.
The local protection system will activate automatically when sensors have detected heat, smoke or a flame,
depending on type and application. The nozzles are dimensioned in sections and all nozzles in the activated
zone will be released. The total flooding system is dimensioned with one section per fire zone and is activated
manually either from the valve operation panel (VOP) in the engine control room or the mimic panel on the
bridge.
Sem-Safe® Water Mist System in operation. During operation, the high pressure pump draws
water from the non pressurized stainless steel buffer tank and forces it through a non-return valve to a highpressure
manifold. From here, it is distributed to the relevant section(s) via the main valve. A pressure relief
valve controls the pump pressure and has the ability to return the full pump capacity to the buffer tank.

The Benefits of Sem-Safe® Water Mist System
Quick fire fighting
• As water mist both cools the fire and removes the oxygen, it results in quicker fire fighting
• Due to the cooling effect of water mist, re-ignition is avoided
• The Sem-Safe® Water Mist System is ready for re-use immediately after a fire
Less damage
• Water damage is kept at a minimum due to the low water consumption of the high pressure
water mist system
• The Sem-Safe® system can be deployed instantly, resulting in less damage
• Using only pure water, the Sem-Safe® Water Mist System gives you the best possible protection
of equipment and human lives.
Reduced down time
• The reduced amount of damage often means less down time, resulting in much lower costs
• There is no need to fill up cylinders, thus saving expensive refilling time and overall costs
No need for extra installations
• The pump unit takes up little space and needs no special room or safe storage
• Easy and fast installation is possible due to small pipe sizes and low system weight

As one of the world’s few manufacturers, Danfoss Semco can offer protection of
your accommodation areas with a true high-pressure water mist system approved
to IMO A 800.
The SemSafe system has an advantage over traditional sprinkler systems in that it
uses only approx. 20% of the amount of water to cover a given area.
In addition, reduced pipe dimensions mean a considerable reduction in weight
and allows installation in smaller spaces.
h i g h a n d l o w p r e s s u r e
c o 2 s y s t e m s
As a consequence of the small pipe dimensions, installation is very easy and Danfoss
Semco has developed a fitting system making installation even easier.
If you experience accidental releases in public areas or cabins, the very low water
quantity means that water damage is limited.
The nozzles used in accommodation areas are usually the closed type with a glass
bulb that breaks at a set temperature. On stand-by, the system maintains only a
low pilot pressure. However, Danfoss Semco also offers a more advanced system
with remote temperature reading and remote release of the sprinkler heads. This
enables the officers in charge to be proactive in suppressing the fire, creating a
water mist barrier around the hot area.
How water mist functions
Water mist is water that, at a high-pressure of 100 bar, creates a fine mist or fog. The fine water mist evaporates
very quickly and the resulting steam starves the fire of oxygen, suppressing it. At the same time, the water evaporation
creates the most efficient form of cooling. In this way, the fire is extinguished both by oxygen suppression
and cooling, providing the advantages of both water and gas-based fire fighting.
High-pressure systems only create high pressure during extinguishing. High pressure water mist will cool the
areas around hot surfaces, and the water mist evaporates before it reaches the hot metal. In this way, shock
cooling and changes in metal structures can be avoided.
Danfoss Semco has been working with high-pressure water mist from the very beginning. This revolutionary
new system is finding its way into more and more application areas, offering an efficient system that is environmentally
friendly as well as harmless to users.
Approval levels and experience. So far, our high pressure water mist system is probably the
world’s most efficient system for accommodation and service areas. Sem-Safe systems have undergone extensive
testing at the Sintef laboratory and have been found to meet all the requirements of the IMO regulations.
Today, we have the approval of all major classification societies.
Local application system
–high pressure water mist
s e m - s a f e
Wat e r m i s t s y s t e m
The Sem-Safe high-pressure local application system for engine rooms is a wellproven,
highly efficient and easy to install high-pressure water mist system that
complies with IMO 913.
Thanks to its flexibility, the standard system – which includes a detection and
release system – is easy to set up to suit almost any requirement. The total cost of
the system is low in comparison with competitor systems. This is due to the small
pipe dimensions, small number of nozzles, large coverage, very low water consumption,
compact skid and the simple design.
In case of release, the water mist is extremely efficient in fire fighting and, in addition,
is documented to be harmless to electrical installations with protection
better than IP 22. The water mist itself is pure, fresh water under a minimum
pressure of 80-100 bars at the nozzle heads.
How it works
The Sem-Safe high-pressure water mist system for local protection is a fire fighting
system for hazardous areas as described in IMO 913, main and auxiliary engines,
boiler fronts, oil separators and incinerators.
For unattended engine rooms, an addressable detection, alarm and release system
should be installed. The system must be assessed in conjunction with the total protection system for the engine
room, whether this is a gas, foam, or water mist system for total flooding.
The system consists of a pump unit skid with an electrical panel, ready for connection to the power and water
supply. Section valves are remotely operated for each object that requires protection. The system comes with all
nozzles, pipes and fittings, mains lines, detection heads and alarm units for each section.
Approval levels and service experience. The system is approved by all major classification
bodies. The Sem-Safe high-pressure water mist local application system was one of the first systems on the market,
even before the IMO 913 was defined. Consequently, it has a proven service record. In addition, the system
was not designed just to comply with the test criteria of 913, but on the basis of real life experience, with a proven
record of stopping one fire incident on a passenger ferry in a surprisingly short time with remarkably little damage
to the engines and electrical installations.
Another advantage of the high pressure fine water mist system is that damage by shock cooling of, for example,
cast parts is avoided.
Danfoss Semco CO 2 systems meet a number of international class requirements, including LRS, DNV, BV, PRS,
CCS, ABS, GL, RMRS and NK, as well as national authorities.
Construction. The Danfoss Semco CO 2 system consists of one or more pressure cylinders containing
the extinguishing agent CO 2 . The cylinders are connected via a common manifold.
From the main manifold, the extinguishing agent is led through distribution valves to the protected spaces.
The valve construction, cylinder size, and cylinder pressure, combined with the computer calculated pipe and
nozzle dimensioning, ensures that the extinguishing agent is distributed in correct quantities and within the prescribed
time. The release is activated pneumatically, electrically and/or mechanically.
Danfoss Semco pressure-operated cylinder valves offer the possibility of connecting CO 2 cylinders in groups
operated pneumatically from one or more release cabinets equipped with CO 2 gas cylinders. The release cabinets
are equipped with pilot valves for use in opening cylinders and distribution valves by pipe connections.
For pneumatic operation, the built-in actuator is used for each cylinder valve. These are connected to the other
cylinder valves in the group via series-connected, flexible high-pressure hoses.

CO 2 Cylinders. The cylinders are delivered as 67.5-litre steel cylinders filled with 45 kg of CO 2 , or alternatively
as 80-litre steel cylinders filled with 53.6 kg of CO 2 . To enable remote control and quick release, the
cylinders are supplied with Danfoss Semco pressure operated quick opening valves, which also offer the possibility
of manual operation.
The valve construction secures against damaging overpressure in the cylinder, as the valve has a built-in bursting
disc, activated at a nominal pressure of 190 bar.
CO 2 Room. The cylinders are normally stored in a separate, well-ventilated and insulated room, where the
temperature is kept between 0° and 40°C. The room must have free access to open air. The room should have a
minimum clear height of 2.4 m to provide adequate space for the mounting of manifolds and weighing beams
for check weighing of the cylinders.
Checking Equipment. The cylinders can be checked by a weighing device or liquid level measurement.
Special Equipment. To reduce the installation time in CO 2 rooms onboard ships, cylinder arrangements
mounted in racks consisting of up to 100 pieces of 45/53.6 kg cylinders, complete with manifold and fixing
equipment, can be supplied.
C O 2 E xtinguishing System: Release System
The Pressure Controlled Cylinder Valve. All Danfoss Semco’s release systems are based
on the unique pressure operated cylinder valve. This valve is used in all systems in which pressure cylinders (CO 2
and N 2 ) form a part. CO 2 cylinders, with contents of up to 60 kg discharge, can be released within one minute. Valve
housings and internal parts are made of brass or stainless steel, with tightening materials of neoprene or copper.
The valve is constructed as a combined pressure operated quick opening valve with hand wheel for manual opening.
The Danfoss Semco valve is designed with a unique function that enables the user to perform a real check of
the valve function. By opening the control valve for releasing the cylinders while leaving the distribution valve
closed, the manifold will be pressurised. It can then be proved that each valve is opened. By closing the control
valve, the release piping system will be relieved and the cylinder valves will close. This function is required by
some classes and authorities.
Pneumatic Release System.Total flooding systems require groups of cylinders to be released
simultaneously. For this purpose, pneumatically operated cylinder valves are used in conjunction with the pilot
pressure from the master release box containing control cylinder(s) (CO 2 or N 2 ), two control valves, a pressure
gauge, and one or two door switches.
As an option, the system can be supplied with a pneumatic time delay device to delay the opening of the main
valve. Emergency release from the CO 2 room can be made by manually opening the cylinder valve and then
operating the two local control valves.

The Danfoss Semco QA system is in accordance with EN ISO 9001: 2000 and is certified by DNV.
Our ongoing internal training programs make our employees – naval architects, sales engineers, project managers,
service engineers, etc. – fully qualified to handle our fire fighting systems for the marine industry. An important
element is the use of an approved computer program for hydraulic calculations, which secures a quick and
precise system design.
Low Pressure CO 2 Systems

L ow Pressure C O 2 Systems
Danfoss Semco low pressure CO2 systems are intended for use where large machinery and cargo spaces require
protection with carbon dioxide. The advantage of the low pressure system is that one single tank replaces a large
number of CO2 cylinders with an approximate saving of 50% in weight. The tank, main valves, distribution valves,
refrigerators, and associated controls are supplied prewired and ready assembled on a common steel frame.
The quantity of carbon dioxide is shown directly by an electronic gauge indicating the actual tons of CO2 in the
tank. The gauge unit is fitted with alarm contacts for warning at low CO2 contents in the tank. Recharging after
use is made directly from a truck.
For large vessels the installation cost of a low pressure CO2 system is considerably lower compared to the installation
costs of a high pressure CO2 system.
The system is designed to meet the requirements of the appropriate classification societies to which the vessel is
being built.
Tank. The tank is constructed as a steel pressure vessel in accordance with the classification society requirements.
The tank is equipped with two safety valves, which are fitted to a three way change-over valve, thus one
safety valve is connected to the vessel if the other one is out of operation. The tank unit is supplied complete and
ready for use, installed on a rectangular steel framework and held in position by thermally insulated supports.
The tank is insulated with non-flammable polyurethane foam protected by an aluminium cover.
Refrigeration Units. The refrigeration units are installed at the end of the tank on the support frame
and are completely duplicated both mechanically and electrically. The refrigerant is environmentally friendly and
the cooling circuits on the compressors and condensers are suitable for either seawater, fresh water or air-cooling.
The tank is maintained at a temperature of –18°C, which is equivalent to a CO2 storage pressure of 2.1 MPa.
CO2 Level Indication. An electrical capacitance type liquid gauge is fitted and the meter is calibrated
from zero tank contents to tank full. The indicator has an accuracy of +/- 2% and is fitted with an alarm switch
indicating minimum filling level.
To meet rule requirements an overfill valve and a level sight tube with isolation valve is fitted.
Controls. A pre-wired operating panel is installed at the end of the tank on the support frame, at which are

grouped all controls and overload relays for the refrigerators, tank pressure, level indicators, and various indicators
and warning lamps. The panel is completely watertight and fitted with cable glands.
Valves and Filling Connections. The automatically operated main stop valve and distribution
valves are ball valves fitted with manual override. The valves are sized so that the appropriate quantity of carbon
dioxide will be discharged in accordance with the rule requirements. To prevent ice formation on the valves the
main outlet pipe from the tank is located at the top of the tank as a continuation of the tank dip tube. The tank
is filled by a truck through twin filling and balancing lines led from the tank to deck level port and/or starboard.
Isolation valves and hose connections are fitted to these lines.
Release of Carbon Dioxide. Remote release of the required quantity of gas to a particular space is
made from master control boxes located as required. The release system utilises the CO2 pressure from the tank
to actuate the main stop valve and the distribution valve via pressure operated control valve, and these valves are
arranged for remote operation from the master control box. When the appropriate quantity of carbon dioxide
Argonite®
Fire Protection Systems
Secure lives, values and
the environment
Inert Gas Fire Extinguishing Systems

Argonite Fire Extinguishing System
CHARACTERISTICS
• Suitable for extinguishing in closed spaces like engine rooms, machinery spaces, switchboard rooms,
control rooms, computer rooms and is particularly applicable for high value risks where fires can
have devastating consequences way beyond the cost of damage and lost production.
• Extinguishes a fire within a short time and leaves no residue after extinguishing. Shut-down time
after a fire will be reduced to a minimum. Safe for personnel at design concentrations.
• Suitable for extinguishing fires in combustible liquids, gases and electrical equipment and for extinguishing
smouldering fires in wood, paper, textiles, etc.
• Is installed as a total flooding central bank system including a number of distributions or in the
protected room subject to authority’s approval.
• Normally installed with pneumatic release but can also be supplied with mechanical, electrical, and
manual release.
GENERAL. Argonite has been developed to meet the demands for an environmentally friendly extinguishing
media. Argonite is non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-fogging and leaves no residue. Argonite
is a mixture of 50% Argon and 50% Nitrogen. In closed spaces, the gas will extinguish almost all fires
when the oxygen concentration falls below 15%. Argonite meets the challenge from both the Montreal
and the Kyoto protocol with no ozone depletion potential or global warming potential. Argonite
is tested and approved by regulatory bodies throughout the world and Argonite has been used since
1992 as an alternative to Halon 1301.
Danfoss Semco Argonite Systems is based on Argonite components from Kidde Danmark, have MED
certificate and meet a number of international class requirements, including LRS, DNV, BV, PRS,
CCS, ABS, GL, RMRS and NK as well as national authorities.

MODULAR SYSTEM. The Argonite cylinders can be located in the protected spaces subject to authority’s
approval. The nozzles and pipes are fitted direct to each cylinder and the cylinder valves are connected
with two separate release line, either electrically or pneumatically, to ensure simultaneous release
of the cylinders.
CENTRAL BANK SYSTEM. The Danfoss Semco Argonite System consists of one or more pressure cylinders
containing the extinguishing agent Argonite. The cylinders are connected via a common manifold.
From the main manifold the extinguishing agent is led through distribution valves to the protected spaces.
A pressure reducing orifice is fitted upstream of the discharge pipe.
The valve construction, cylinder size, reducing orifice and cylinder pressure combined with the computer
calculated pipe and nozzle dimensioning ensures that the extinguishing agent is distributed in correct
amounts and within the prescribed time.
The release is activated pneumatically, electrically and/or mechanically.
ARGONITE CYLINDERS. The cylinders are delivered as 67,5/80 ltr. steel cylinders filled with Argonite
at 150/200/300 bar. To enable remote control and quick release the cylinders are supplied with a pressure
operated quick opening valve, which also offers the possibility of manual operation.
The valve construction secures against damaging overpressure in the cylinder, as the valve has a built-in
bursting disc which is activated at a pressure less than 1.5 x the design pressure. Each cylinder valve is
equipped with a gauge which enables convenient inspection of the agent pressure, and a pressure switch
is fitted as standard to allow remote monitoring of the system integrity.
ARGONITE CYLINDER STORAGE ROOM. The cylinders are normally stored in a separate, well-ventilated
and insulated room, where the temperature is kept between 0° and 40°C. The room must have free
access to open deck. The room should have a minimum clear height of 2.4 m to provide adequate space
for mounting of manifolds.
ARGONITE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM; RELEASE SYSTEM. The valve is constructed as a combined
pressure operated quick opening valve with hand wheel for manual opening.
Total flooding systems require groups of cylinders to be released simultaneously. For this purpose the
pneumatically operated cylinder valves are used together with the pilot pressure from the master release
box containing control cylinder(s) (CO2 or N2), two control valves, a pressure gauge, and one or two door
switches.
As an option, the system can be supplied with a pneumatic time delay device for delay of the opening of
the cylinder valve.
Emergency release from the Argonite room can be made by manual opening of the cylinder valve and
thereafter operating the distribution valves.

The Danfoss Semco QA system is in accordance with EN/ISO 9001: 2000 and is certified by DNV.
Our ongoing internal training programs make our employees - naval architects, sales engineers, project managers,
service engineers etc. - fully qualified to handle our fire fighting systems for the marine industry. An important
element is the use of an approved computer program for hydraulic calculations, which secures a quick
and precise system design.
K5-Galley
Deep Fat Fryer
Fire Extinguishing System

The K-5 Galley Fire suppression system has been designed to
meet the requirements of ISO 15371. Recent changes to SOLAS
regulations mean new demands have been placed on ship
owners and operators to ensure the health and safety afforded to
the ship and crew is upgraded. To meet that requirement,
development has been undertaken to design a complimentary
marine version of the highly successful and well established
Nobel K Series Wet Chemical Fire Suppression system.
The K5-Systems are fully independent systems, they are
electrically actuated and can be released either manually or
automatic. For automatic release the system is connected to a
heat detector to detect fire conditions. The detector is placed
directly over the appliance being protected.
The K5-Systems can be operated manually by using a push
button on the panel front, or automatic if a connected to a heat
detector. On receiving the appropriate FIRE signal the system
control panel sounds audible alarm and immediately initiates
shut down of the power supply to the appliance/s being
protected. Simultaneously the control system deploys the
suppressant liquid onto the fire.
The gas required to pressurise the storage cylinder is
produced ifl a controlled manner from a solid propellant gas
generator. The cylinder and gas generator remain at zero
pressure until an electrical signal is received from the system
control panel. On actuation the cylinder is pressurised to 10-
12 bar.
The Wet Chemical Suppressant Liquid Nobel-K has been
specially formulated to suppress fires ifl cooking oils and
grease and prevent re-ignition. Rapid fire knockdown is
achieved and the fuel is cooled to below its auto ignition
temperature. A chemical process known as “Saponification”
then provides added post fire security by forming a thick
soapy vapour barrier between the surface of the fuel and the
atmosphere.
Low Maintenance and High Reliability.
The K5-Galley fire suppression systems contain no moving
paris and remain at ZERO pressure until a fire condition has
been detected. Consequently there is no scope for failure due
to leaking propellant gas or from faulty gauges, valves or
mechanical linkages. Continuous monitoring of the alarm input
and extinguishing output circuits is undertaken automatically
at the control panel and fault modes are indicated accordingly.
System storage cylinder
The cylinder assembly is manufactured in stainless steel and
has a capacity of 5 litres. A bursting disc assembly effectively
seals the cylinder and secures the integrity of the liquid. As
the system is actuated the increase in pressure in the tank
ruptures the burst disc and allows the Iiquid to enter the
stainless steel distribution pipework.

Gas Generator technoloçiy.
Each system is pressurised using a solid propellant gas generator,
producing gas at a pre-determined pres- sure to achieve maximum
system performance. The gas generators are maintenance free and are
based upon well proven defence technology. The generator connects to
the control system via an 1P67 rated plug and lead assembly to enable
easy secure connection and disconnection, allowing a replacement
cylinder assembly to be quickly refitted into the system after discharge.
The gas generator allows the system to remain at ZERO pressure until
electrically actuated enhancing operational efficiency and safety, by
removing the need to transport, store, handle and maintain high
pressure gas cylinders or cartridges. The loss of pressure due to
leakage of expellant gas is effectively ruled out.
Mist Technology nozzles.
The nozzles have been specifically designed to give rapid knock down of
the flames and fast cooling of the burning oils and fats to below autoignition
temperature.
Each nozzle is manufactured from stainless steel and produces a full
cone mist Each nozzle is protected from the ingress of oils and grease
by a stainless steel blow off cap.
NFS Solo Suppression release control panel
Every system has an electrical control panel. The panel is activated
either by pressing the pushbutton, or if automatic, receives a signal
from the detection device and automatically actuates the discharge
circuitry.
The panel constantly monitors detection and actuation circuits for
faults. Panels provide signals to the main ships alarm if required
and in every instance automatically shuts down power to the
affected cooking appliance.
The panel has facilities for connection to external battery back-up,
and external alarm .
APPROVALS
The K-5 system has undergone independent assessment to ISO
15371 :2000: AlI designs and testing have been audited, assessed
and approved.

Deck Foam for Fire Extinguishing

Deck fo am for fire extinguishing
Foam for fire protection purposes is an aggregate of air-filled bubbles formed from aqueous solutions, and is
lower in density than the lightest flammable liquids. It is mainly used to form a coherent floating blanket on flammable
and combustible liquids to prevent or to extinguish fires by excluding air and cooling the fuel. It also prevents
re-ignition by suppressing formation of flammable vapours. It has the property of adhering to surfaces,
providing a degree of exposure protection from adjacent fires.
Foam is used as a fire prevention, control, or extinguishing agent for flammable liquid in tanks or processing
areas. Foam solution for these hazards may be supplied by fixed systems or portable foam generating systems.
Foam Types. The principal use of foam is to extinguish burning flammable or combustible liquid spills or
tank fires by developing a coherent coolant blanket. Foam is the only permanent extinguishing agent used for
fires of this type. Its application allows fire fighters to extinguish fires progressively. A foam blanket covering a
liquid surface is capable of preventing vapour transmission for some time, depending on its stability and thickness.
Fuel spills may be rendered safe by foam blanketing. The blanket may be removed after a suitable period of time.
Foam is used to diminish or halt the generation of flammable vapours from non-burning liquids or solids, and
to cut off access to air for combustion. The water content of foam cools and diminishes oxygen by steam displacement.
Foam is also used to fill cavities or enclosures where toxic or flammable gases may collect. Foam solutions are
conductive and therefore not recommended to be used for electrical fires.
Foam Concentrate Types
1. Protein foam concentrate. It is diluted with water to form 3% to 6% solutions depending on the type and, in
general, it is only used for crude oil fires.
2. Fluoroprotein foam concentrate is very similar to protein foam concentrates. It may also deposit a vaporisation
preventing film on the surface of a liquid fuel. It is diluted with water to form 3% to 6% solutions depending
on the type, and is used for crude oil or refined oil products where a higher degree of protection is preferred.
3. Special ‘alcohol type’ foam concentrate forms a foam that has an insoluble barrier in the bubble structure
which resists breakdown at the interface of the fuel and foam blanket. It is used for fighting fires in water solution
and certain flammable or combustible liquids and solvents that are destructive to regular foam. Mainly
used for protection onboard chemical tankers.

4. Synthetic foam concentrate includes: AFFF and medium and high expansion foam concentrates are used to
produce foam or foam-to-solution volume ratios from 20:1 to approx. 1000:1 and are used for local protection
and engine room hi-ex systems.
SOLAS Rules. For ships carrying chemicals or oils in bulk, SOLAS/IMO require a fixed deck foam system
for extinguishing fires on deck or in tanks.
In principle, the systems required are identical; however, for chemical tankers, IMO type 2 and 3, the foam
system is considerably larger than for crude oil tankers, due to the higher risk of fire in chemicals.
Design Figures
Oil Tankers. The foam system capacity shall be a minimum of the largest of the entire cargo tank deck
covered with 0.6 l/ m 2 /min. or 6.0 l/m2/min. for the largest cargo tank.
Chemical Tankers. The foam system capacity shall be a minimum of the largest of the entire cargo tank
deck covered with 2.0 l/m 2 /min. or 20 l/m2/min. for the largest cargo tank.
DESCRIPTION
System Description. All foam systems, consist of a water supply, foam liquid storage, a proportioning
device and a distribution system.
The water supply pump(s) provide(s) a certain capacity of seawater to the deck foam system, and is/are supplied
by the ship’s fire pumps.
The foam liquid is stored in a tank. The tank must be complete with vent, contents gauge, and access manhole.
The foam is delivered via a high pressure foam liquid pump to the automatic foam liquid proportionator, which
will accurately proportionate foam liquid at 3% to 6% to the seawater flow, irrespective of flow rate or pressure.
For satisfactory operation of the proportionator, foam liquid must be supplied with a minimum pressure of at
least 10 metres head higher than the inlet water pressure under all load conditions. The electrically driven foam
liquid pump is provided for this purpose.
Foam solution is supplied to the deck monitors and hand lines by the deck main fitted with isolating valves. Each
monitor is isolated from the main supply pipe by means of butterfly valves, which are normally closed.
Four portable foam-making branch pipes are provided. Each branch pipe has a solution rate of 400 l/min.

Dry Powder System

Dr y Powder System
Ships carrying liquefied gas and certain chemicals/agents in bulk shall be equipped with a fixed dry powder
system ready for operation.
Danfoss Semco is one of the main suppliers of fixed dry powder systems, which comply with the IGC and IBC
codes from SOLAS.
Danfoss Semco systems are recognised by all leading classification societies and international authorities
including ABS, BV, DNV, GL, KRS, LRS, NK, PRS, CCS, RMRS and others.
Characteristics. Dry chemical powder, when introduced directly to a fire, causes the flame to go out
almost at once.
The chemical used is in principle Sodium or Potassium Bicarbonate (BC).
Various additives are mixed with the base chemicals to improve the storage, flow, and water-repellent
characteristics.
Dry powders are stable at both low and high temperatures (up to 50 deg. C.)
BC powders are non-toxic, but due to the size of the particles (10 to 50 microns) temporary breathing difficulties
may occur, and personnel must stay clear of the jets to avoid suffocation.
Application. Danfoss Semco dry powder systems have been developed to meet the increasing demands for
large capacity systems for use in the extinguishing of fires involving bulk chemical agents and liquefied gases.
SOLAS rules (IGC and IBC) require that dry powder systems protect the entire deck area, cargo manifold, and
connection areas from fixed monitors. In addition the system should be capable of supplying dry powder to any
part of the cargo deck from at least two sources i.e., hand hose or hand hose line/monitor.
In order to design and calculate a system it is necessary to know the length, breadth, and format of the cargo deck
together with details of any obstacles such as tank domes, cargo storage, and handling facilities, etc.
System Operation. Nitrogen passing through a reduction valve pressurises the tank and nozzles fitted
in the bottom atomise the contents.

M
~
When a pressure of 0.9-1 MPa bar has been achieved, a pilot valve opens the main discharge valve and the dry
powder flows through the distribution manifold to the monitor or hand hose line in question.
The pressure during discharge is kept constant by means of a reduction valve placed upstream of the dry powder
unit.
Release of the system may be remotely operated from the release boxes utilising a nitrogen pilot cylinder or alternatively
manually operated at the dry powder unit.
The propellant gas system is designed to contain sufficient nitrogen to maintain the pressure during release as
well as to clean the pipes and hand hose lines after discharge.
The hand hose line cabinet is delivered complete, mounted in a GRP/FRP box suitable for installation on the
weather deck and fitted with a release arrangement, trigger nozzle, and flange connection for the supply pipe.
Each hand hose line cabinet is suitably spaced along the deck in such a way that no part of the deck is more than
33 m from two cabinets.
Monitor(s) are located to ensure coverage of the cargo manifolds on each side of the vessel.
Release box(es) are provided beside the monitor(s) and in the cargo handling station.
maintenanCe. In general, all dry chemical powder systems should be thoroughly inspected and checked
annually.
The inspection and maintenance of hand hose line systems will vary with the location and climate conditions.
Dry chemical powder is available in various sized packages. Whatever the container, it should be kept tightly
closed and stored in a dry location in order to prevent absorption of moisture. Once the powder has lost its free
High pressure water mist
S E M - S A F E
WAT E R M I S T S Y S T E M
THE SEM-SAFE HIGH-PRESSURE WATER MIST SYSTEM is a
highly efficient fire protection system for luxury yachts.
The Sem-Safe system is a true high-pressure water mist system operating at a 100
bar nozzle pressure. Its unique spray technique is very efficient in fire fighting for
both accommodation, service areas, duct, deep fat fryers and as total flooding
and local protection systems for engine rooms.
H I G H A N D L O W P R E S S U R E
C O 2 S Y S T E M S
The unique high-pressure technology, with probably the best spray system available
anywhere, provides efficient fire suppression in spite of its very low water
consumption. Consequently, a fire can be extinguished without causing serious
water damage to furniture or equipment.
In addition, the low water consumption makes it possible to use very small pipes;
typically, 28 mm main pipes and 10 mm distribution pipes. This means that the
piping is easily installed and also easily hidden. The low weight and small dimensions,
in conjunction with the beautifully designed nozzles, very often make the
Sem-Safe system the preferred choice of architects and owners.
Yards and fitters like the system’s easy installation, with its modular format,
compact pump skids and the Sem-Safe installation system. The modular pump
skid system offers great flexibility in fitting the pump units into the available space
during construction. The flexibility of the system also includes specific nozzle
designs and other customer based demands.
How it works
The Sem-Safe system is a total protection system for yachts, and conforms to the regulations IMO A 800 for accommodation
areas, IMO 668 for engine rooms, IMO 913 for local protection, deep fat fryer and duct. All areas are served by a common
pump unit.
The system consists of a pump unit, which serves all areas via section valves. In accommodation areas, the nozzles are activated
only if the heat-sensitive glass bulb is broken. Full pressure is then activated and only nozzles with a broken bulb are
released. Consequently, only the heat-affected area will be actively sprayed.
Engine rooms are covered by open nozzles, which means that the nozzles in one section will be activated, either manually or
by a detection system. The fine mist created by the high pressure is so gentle to the hot surfaces and electrical equipment that
there are no reasons to worry about major water damages if the system is released.
Case Story
M/V OLYMPIC TBN
– easy choice of fire protection system
sem-safe
Water mist system
The vessel M/V Olympic TBN was built by the Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft A/S for
Olympic shipping. Both Ulstein and Olympic had previously been acquainted with the
Danfoss Semco SEM-SAFE water mist system, and therefore the choice of fire fighting
system was easy.
Project manager at Olympic Shipping A/S Mr. Harald Hansen:
“We like the principle with water as extinguishing medium which is already available onboard.
It is also positive that seawater can be used in case of low fresh water level and the
extra back up by means of the bottle bank, which is intended for use in case of black out.
Furthermore, the SEM-SAFE system has a high safety level that rules out failures, and the
system is easily operated.”
Through a series of projects, Ulstein Verft A/S and Danfoss Semco Fire Protection have
established cooperation with mutual understanding of the requirements of a water mist
system, which not only has to be class approved but also easily accessed and operated.
Danfoss Semco A/S not only delivers but also installs SEM-SAFE systems at Ulstein Verft,
which means that the shipyard can concentrate on other installations. Ultimately, a service
engineer goes through the entire system, and a commissioning with attendants from the
shipyard, shipowner and class surveyor is performed.

The Sem-Safe® system
The SEM-SAFE water mist system was installed at the Multifunctional
Platform Supply Vessel (MPSV) M/V Olympic
TBN in 2008. The type of fire protection installed on the
4,900 tonnes deadweight vessel is total flooding in main
engine room, including bilge and casing plus switchboard
room. In addition, local protection systems have been installed
for each of the four main engines, fuel oil separator,
boiler and incinerator. In total, 115 nozzles have been
installed.
The 2,000x900mm pump unit consists of three main PAH
63/22kW pumps and one standby with a capacity of 318 l/
min. Emergency change over box according to DNV rules.
The bottle bank has a capacity of 1 minute water discharge
in case of black out.
