Voorwoord
Foreword
Welcome to the University Medical Center Groningen: the center for highly specialized medical
treatments for the more than 3 million residents living in the north of the Netherlands. We are
developing the future of health and it is our ambition to find answers to the questions associated
with the issue of healthy ageing. And each day our physicians and researchers push the
boundaries of medical knowledge and skill. And each day our nurses, paramedics and other
members of staff work on healthcare plans that enable patients to participate in society with
the highest possible level of independence. In all of these fields we train professionals who are
not only experts at the ins and outs of their chosen specialization, but who are also able to look
beyond existing boundaries. After all, healthy ageing is, by definition, an issue that requires the
integrated knowledge and experience of many disciplines.
The focus on healthy ageing seamlessly fits in with our tradition: for many decades chronic
illnesses have been a focal point of the UMCG. The strength of the UMCG is the rapid exchange
and application of knowledge and experiences within the chain of research, patient care and
education. We achieve this within our organization and with regional, national, European and
international partners. Consequently the UMCG is an important driving force for better
prevention, better diagnostics, better cure and better care.
Not surprisingly, international interest in the UMCG is growing strongly: around twenty percent
of our students and researchers come here from other countries to be trained to become
outstanding physicians or scientists.
In this brochure you can find out how our staff is working on ‘Developing the future of health’.
I warmly invite you to get to know the UMCG!
Yours sincerely,
on behalf of the Board of Directors
De focus op healthy ageing
Focus on healthy ageing
doorgebracht. Dat heeft grote consequenties voor
de gezondheidszorg. Daarom zijn nieuwe concepten van
preventie hard nodig.
How can we prevent the effects of chronic illnesses and
so increase people’s health and wellbeing? In short: how
can people stay healthier when getting older? These are
major questions that require major answers. Answering
these questions is the challenge of the 21 st century. The
21 st century needs new knowledge on how to live longer
while staying healthier. The University Medical Center
Groningen (UMCG) considers prevention under the
header of Healthy Ageing the solution to this problem.
Yes, people are living longer, but the added years are
generally not spent in good health. That has significant
consequences for the healthcare sector. This is why new
prevention concepts are urgently needed.
kennisspurt. Om die te realiseren hebben het UMCG,
de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), de hogescholen,
overheden en het bedrijfsleven in Noord-Nederland een
kenniscluster rond het thema Healthy Ageing opgericht:
het Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands –
Region of Knowledge & Development (HANNN).
podium. Door samenwerking binnen HANNN
is in Noord-Nederland de valorisatieketen geborgd, met
het UMCG als epicentrum
Since 1996 the UMCG has designated transplant medicine
and chronic illnesses as internal cornerstones. In recent
years these have been ‘translated’ into a clear spear point:
Healthy Ageing. The UMCG defines healthy ageing as the
whole of the efforts resulting in the optimization of the
process of physical, psychological and social ageing.
Healthy ageing may be achieved by acquiring a better
understanding of the physical ageing process, by improving
the prevention and treatment of chronic and often
age-related illnesses, but also by optimizing the healthcare
and the development of technologies for the ageing
individual. Based on its core activities, healthcare, training
& education and research, the UMCG is in the ideal
position to contribute to the realization and application
of new fundamental knowledge of ageing processes, the
development and progression of illnesses and (the structuring
of) healthcare.
The issue of ‘How do we age actively and healthily’ requires
a knowledge burst. To realize this explosive development
the UMCG, the University of Groningen,
the Academies, authorities and business community in
the north of the Netherlands have established a knowledge
cluster around the theme of Healthy Ageing: the
Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands – Region
of Knowledge & Development (HANNN). It is the ambition
of HANNN to build on the existing initiatives and
programs in order to become a northern European top
region in the area of healthy ageing. HANNN acts as an
umbrella: it provides a coordinating perspective for the
separate initiatives, combines them into a strategy for
the Northern Netherlands and provides a region-superseding
platform. The collaboration within the HANNN
guarantees the valorization in the Northern Netherlands,
with the UMCG as the epicenter.
Our core responsibilities
Medische behandeling en zorg
Het UMCG is hét centrum voor hooggespecialiseerde
medische behandelingen.
Medical care and treatment
The UMCG is the center for highly specialized medical
treatments. It is the only university medical center in the
north of the Netherlands that provides top level clinical
and basic care to the more than 3 million people living
in the region. For a number of specific conditions patients
from around the Netherlands and abroad come to
Groningen for tertiary referral care. For instance, the
UMCG is the largest transplant center in the Netherlands
and is among one of the few hospitals in
the world to perform all forms of organ and tissue
transplants. But for other, complex disorders or
simple disorders with difficult complications, patients
come to the right place when they visit the UMCG.
In the area of critical care the UMCG also has a special
responsibility: in the entire north of the Netherlands
and part of the north of Germany, the UMCG
is the only top trauma center that offers the entire
chain from care and treatment through to rehabilitation.
With the medical helicopter the physicians and
para-medics are able to reach any location in the north of
the Netherlands and the north of Germany within 30
minutes.
Onderzoek
Research
The fundamental and clinical research conducted at the
UMCG is among the international scientific top level.
The availability of unique bio banks and state-of-the-art
research facilities attract scientists from throughout the
world. It is not surprising that the research subsidies the
UMCG receives increase considerably every year. The
UMCG is a sought-after coordinator and partner in many
international research consortiums.
Onderwijs
Wenckebach Skills Center UMCG.
Education
The UMCG is demonstrably among the best scientific
educational institutes in the Netherlands in the area of
medicine, dentistry and human movement sciences.
Groningen is not only renowned for its successful modernization
of scientific education, but also has a reputation
for its innovation of nursing education and competency-based
continuing education, training and courses
to (para)medics and nurses. The fact that the UMCG is
a forerunner in the development of education and training
is underlined by the hyper-modern Wenckebach
Skills Center UMCG. In this mini hospital, with operating
and patient rooms and an intensive care unit, healthcare
providers from different disciplines and educational levels
undergo virtual and ‘almost real’ training to practice
skills, new surgery techniques and treatment methods.
Training for other aspects, such as teamwork, is also available
in the skills center.
Thomassen à Thuessinkpenning kreeg is dr. Wim
Hol.
scientist in question is awarded the Thomassen
à Thuessink medal. The Thomassen à Thuessink
medal is an international award that is granted
for a unique achievement in the area of (top)
Onze geschiedenis
Our history
Academic care and medical training has been provided
in Groningen for hundreds of years. Of the excellent
scientists who have worked here Petrus Camper
(1722-1789) is by far the best known. Most of the
professors also held the position of city physician and, as
a result, were able to combine science and education with
patient care. In 1797 Professor Thomassen à Thuessink
(1762-1832) was responsible for the establishment of a
real teaching hospital, the Nosocomium Academicum.
Thomassen à Thuessink was Professor of practical
medicine in Groningen from 1793 tot 1825 and may be
considered the founder of the UMCG.
Nothing like today
Two small wards with a total of eight beds: that’s what
the UMCG looked like in the very early days. The contrast
with today could not be bigger. These days the hospital
is occupied by 15,000 patients, employees, students and
every day. But there are also similarities to the
past: the professors still give medical students a ‘bedside
education’.
An uphill battle
Adversity has never stopped residents of Groningen
from taking initiatives and realizing dreams. Despite the
unwillingness of the Dutch government to invest in research
and patient care in Groningen, top-level care was
being provided in the 19 th century UMCG regardless. The
lack of facilities did not impede the development of a fertile
scientific climate either. The UMCG has always been
able to attract inspired and enthusiastic professors with
vision, powers of persuasion and perseverance. They
raised the patient care, science and education to a higher
level. The scientific growth reached a preliminary high
point after the move to a brand-new complex in 1903.
eeuw.
in Nederland.
insights in the area of hospital construction of the day,
and attracted interested parties from the whole country,
including members of the Royal Family. From 1903
onward the UMCG rapidly developed to become one of
the top hospitals of the Netherlands. Like today, patients
could turn to the UMCG for all medical treatments and
care. And like today, scientific discoveries quickly found
their way to the clinic, in the form of new treatment
methods.
Scientific growth
The current top-clinical expertise of the UMCG in the area
of chronic diseases and transplant medicine has its roots
in the start of the 20 th century. Around 1900, for instance,
the international scientific community looked toward
Groningen where professor Hamburger was working on
research into the composition of blood and the changes
to this composition under the influence of metabolic
processes. In that same period professor Wenckebach
(1864-1941) was at the cradle of modern cardiology in
the Netherlands. Professor Hijmans van den Bergh made
important discoveries for diagnosing liver diseases and
female Professor Tammes laid the foundation for genetics
in the Netherlands.
Pionier in transplantatiegeneeskunde
chirurgie.
In
ontwikkeling. In 1968 verrichte het UMCG voor het eerst
een niertransplantatie, als tweede in Nederland. Ondertussen
zocht men verder naar transplantatiemogelijkheden
van andere organen. Sinds 2007 kan het UMCG
alle mogelijke transplantaties uitvoeren.
Pioneer in transplant medicine
In the 50 s and 60 s the Groningen medical center was in
the international front line of experimental surgery. This
only reinforces the foundation of today’s UMCG as a
center of knowledge for chronic diseases and transplant
medicine. A thorax center was established and big advances
were also made in the area of pediatric cardiology. In
1954 the first open heart surgery on a child was performed,
whereby hyperthermia was used. Three years later
the heart-lung machine developed in Groningen was
used for the first time. Nephrology and transplant medicine
also progressed strongly in those years. In 1968
the UMCG performed its first kidney transplant, only the
second time this operation was performed in the Netherlands.
Meanwhile research was continued into transplant
options for other organs. Since 2007 the UMCG has
been capable of performing any possible transplant.
The future of health
Since the early days Groningen has been working to
advance the boundaries of medical knowledge. This development
continues today and is not limited to transplant
medicine and experimental surgery. Other professional
fields have long focused on the origination of (chronic)
disorders and on understanding and treating these
conditions. At the start of the 60 s the UMCG conducted,
for the first time, a large-scale longitudinal population
survey in the Netherlands, aimed at asthma and COPD.
This ‘mother of the Dutch bio banks’ still provides useful
insights today, as do the many other Groningen bio
banks. The UMCG shares this knowledge with other
national and international research institutes with the
objective of acquiring knowledge that will help prevent
certain diseases in the future, as a result of which transplants
may no longer be necessary.
Levertransplantatiechirurg
prof. dr. Robert Porte: “In ons team
is iedereen absolutely dedicated. Samen maken we
Alle cruciale beslissingen nemen we samen.
beoefenen.”
Operating on the edge of human ability
The UMCG’s HPB team (Hepatic-Pancreatic-Biliary
Surgery) performs surgery on the liver, bile ducts and
pancreas and is responsible for the liver transplants.
The team operates ‘on the edge of human ability’. The
fact that the surgeons have different backgrounds –
oncological surgery, transplant surgery – results in
‘cross pollination’. Liver transplant surgeon Professor
Dr. Robert Porte: “Everyone in our team is absolutely
dedicated. Together you consider the options to find the
optimum solution for the patient. Often this is a cure,
sometimes it is a few extra years of life, sometimes a
few extra weeks. We make all the essential decisions
together. Each of us has his own background and angle
of approach, which means you continue to learn. Within
our team everyone is able to be the best they can be.
At this time I cannot think of a single hospital in the
Netherlands that works the way we do for this type of
surgery. For me the UMCG is the only hospital where I
can practice my profession at this high level.”
diabetes. Dit roept nieuwe vragen op rondom afstotingsmechanismen
en medicatie die raakvlakken hebben met
een breed spectrum aan vakgebieden, van fundamenteel
geöriënteerde disciplines als pathologie en celbiologie
tot en met de kliniek.
kidney/pancreas are also performed at the UMCG. The
UMCG has also performed special types of multi-organ
transplants, such as simultaneous transplants of the liver,
pancreas, small and large intestine. Patients can also
come to Groningen for skin, heart valve, cornea and bone
transplants. When the bone marrow makes insufficient
blood cells or in the case of a malignant disease of the
blood such as leukemia or lymphoma the hospital offers
stem cell transplants.
The fact that the UMCG is the transplant hospital in
the Netherlands gives the researchers and physicians
working in this hospital a strong incentive for scientific
discussion and enquiry. Scientists work on a multidisciplinary
basis and this combined experience and
knowledge results in a continuous exchange of insights.
The clinical and fundamental research arising from this
leads to innovative diagnostics and treatment methods.
An example will clarify this. The fact that transplant
patients live longer means that, when getting older, they
are often also confronted with conditions like cancer
and diabetes. This raises new questions about rejection
mechanisms and medication that interacts with a broad
range of professional fields, from fundamentally-oriented
disciplines like pathology and cell biology through to
the clinic.
Altijd voorop
Always in the lead
In this academic setting questions therefore continue to
result in knowledge, which is subsequently applied to improve
care and treatment; and this happens across the entire
spectrum in the UMCG. There are plenty of examples.
Thanks to research by the Medical Oncology Department
the treatment of bowel cancer has improved immensely.
The department developed a method to better
diagnose the stage of the disease and the metastases.
As a result of these improved diagnostics patients can
be treated more effectively and their chances of survival
are strongly improved. Nephrologists at the UMCG
developed a test to measure the residual capacity of kidneys.
Based on this measurement it can be accurately
determined whether someone can become a kidney donor.
This test has shown that even at an advanced age a
kidney can be donated safely. And research by the Psychiatry
Department has shown that patients with psychoses
benefit from contact with fellow sufferers. Contact groups
for these patients are now a common practice in many organizations
for mental healthcare in the Netherlands.
Trauma center for millions of people
The UMCG is also the biggest trauma center in the Netherlands.
Using the medical helicopter or one of the
ultra-modern ambulances, the mobile medical team
reaches all of Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel,
the Wadden Islands and the north of Germany, which
gives them a comprehensive working area. In this vast region
hundreds of lives are saved every year thanks to the
UMCG. In the north of the Netherlands the hospital offers
all types of care to victims of accidents and violence.
It provides the entire chain, from critical care through to
rehabilitation and support. However, the UMCG does not
do all of this by itself. In collaboration with twelve partner
hospitals and the ambulance companies the UMCG has
a facilitating and coordinating role. Within the Northern
region there are agreements about the type and level of
trauma care that every hospital can offer, with the UMCG
as the ultimate destination for the most complicated and
hard-to-treat cases. Experts from the hospital are also
permanently available for colleagues to consult. The
UMCG also offers facilities allowing the twelve hospitals
to allways have the most up-to-date knowledge and skills
available in-house to treat and care for people with serious
injuries. The UMCG is responsible for all continuing
education and refresher courses, not just for physicians
but also for the nurses who are involved in the trauma
care.
Medical care and treatment
It’s all about the patient
No matter what his or her condition is, the care requirement
of the individual patient always is the focal point.
This is clear not only from the care and treatment themselves,
but also from the way in which the UMCG organizes
them. People with common, non life-threatening
conditions receive efficient basic care of the highest quality,
provided by and under the supervision of the best
physicians. Quickly and efficiently, because the patient
wants to go home as soon as possible. The hospital can
even arrange for the necessary home care.
Dankzij in eigen huis ontwikkelde screeningsmethoden
It may also be that the care requirement is more complex
than it appears at first, for instance because additional
illnesses or psycho-social problems play a contributing
role. Thanks to screening methods developed in-house,
the UMCG is able to identify this type of complex care
requirement and/or multi-morbidity at an early stage.
These patients receive integral care, support and treatment
for both the somatic and psycho-social problems.
Passende behandeling voor kwetsbare mensen
Het Universitair Centrum voor Ouderengeneeskunde
(‘UCO’) ontwikkelt zorgketens voor ‘de oudere patiënt’
met complexe problemen. Niet alleen wat betreft
gezondheid.
hen extra kwetsbaar.
verschillende geneesmiddelen. Het UCO biedt maatwerk
aan deze complexe oudere patiënten. In een integrale
aanpak staat het individuele welbevinden centraal.
Appropriate treatment for vulnerable people
The University Center for Geriatric Medicine (‘UCO’) is
developing care chains for ‘the elderly patient’ with
complex problems which need not necessarily relate to
just health. The care chains do not limit themselves to
the hospital: the primary care providers and the care
and nursing homes are also closely involved. Cohesive
care chains that are based on an integral approach to
the elderly patient are sorely needed. Old age comes
with (a number of) ailments and this means that older
patients are increasingly faced with complex health
problems. They may have a number of conditions at
once, physical and often also psychological. This
makes them extra vulnerable. From a medical point of
view treating just diabetes or just Parkinson’s disease
does not sufficiently help these people and sometimes
also carries a risk as a result of undesirable interactions
between the various medications. The UCO
offers these complex elderly patients customized care.
In an integral approach the individual wellbeing is the
focal point.
zorgprogramma’s.
In the UMC this integral care is increasingly organized in
special centers. Here, experts work together on a multidisciplinary
basis in targeted treatment and care programs.
medeverantwoordelijk. Daarom werkt het ziekenhuis
al jaren samen met perifere ziekenhuizen, thuiszorg,
verpleeg- en verzorgingshuizen. Het UMCG heeft met
umcGroningen Thuis zelfs een eigen thuiszorgorganisatie
in huis.
umcGroningen Thuis ver. De gespecialiseerde thuiszorgverpleegkundigen
werken vanzelfsprekend nauw samen
Customization also outside the UMCG
However, customization is not limited to the walls of the
hospital. Even after the patient is discharged the UMCG
accepts that it has an ongoing responsibility. This is why,
for many years, the hospital has worked together with
peripheral hospitals, home care providers, care homes
and nursing homes. With umcGroningen Thuis (UMCG
at home) the UMCG even has its own home care organization.
This organization employs nurses who specialize
in providing care to people with specific syndromes, such
as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis,
arthritis, asthma and other lung diseases. Together with
the client the nurse looks for improved or new care solutions
and umcGroningen Thuis goes a long way toward
this objective. Needless to say, the specialist home care
of the UMCG.
Collaboration with General Practitioners
In the Netherlands the General Practitioner (GP) is the
axis in the provision of healthcare. This is why the UMCG
collaborates intensively with the GPs in its region and
regularly organizes symposiums and refresher courses.
Since 2004 the UMCG has also a GP practice. The physicians
who work here are employed by the hospital. In
addition to first-line patient care they are involved in research.
The GP practice brings the GP and the hospital
closer together, so that GPs and medical specialists are
able to coordinate their activities even better.
De combinatie onderzoek-patiëntenzorg
motiveert
in hun laatste fase. Ik zie dat mensen nog zo intens
kunnen genieten van elke dag. Ook daar put ik veel
energie uit.”
The combination of research and patient care is
very motivating
“I feel very privileged that I have a profession in which
you experience progress year after year. And it is
wonderful to be able to combine patient care and research
in a hospital like this, so that you as an individual
are contributing to this progress. It is wonderful if data
on our patients is used for an article in The Lancet on
how women who had breast cancer 15 years ago are
doing today. This allows you to see that your efforts on
behalf of these patients have paid off. It is an incentive
to keep putting extra time into collecting and analyzing
patient data for the purpose of research. This is the only
way to come up with better treatments and improved
patient care. Increasing numbers of people recover from
cancer, and there is a good reason for that.” Talking is
Professor in Medical Oncology Liesbeth de Vries. She
conducts research but is also closely involved with her
patients. She feels this is an important combination in
her profession. “If you don’t consider the patient as a
partner in the fight, if you cut yourself off from all the
emotions and feelings involved… it is almost
impossible to last in this profession. The fact that some
of our patients will ultimately die will never change. But
I also see that people often manage to achieve such
wonderful things, even in the last phase of their illness.
I see people who can still so intensely enjoy every day.
This also gives me a lot of positive energy.”
Care innovation in the region
The UMCG also collaborates in the substantive improvement
of healthcare outside the hospital and participates
in many innovative healthcare projects. This way the
latest knowledge of the University Medical Center finds
its way directly to ‘the field’, which allows the quality of
care to improve across the entire spectrum. For instance,
in the northern and eastern regions of the Netherlands
the UMCG plays a leading role in improving donor recruitment
and donor care. Another example: within the
ZorgInnovatiePlatform (Care Innovation Platform) the
UMCG, in conjunction with other partners, is investigating
the application options of home automation in the
provision of healthcare. This type of automation uses
smart ICT applications in the home, making it possible
for the elderly and for chronically ill patients to live independently
in safety.
Research
Institute for Healthy Ageing vormen fundamentele en klinische
cluster Healthy Ageing Noord Nederland.
European Research Institute on the Biology of Ageing
(ERIBA). Hier werken topwetenschappers wereldwijd aan
antwoorden op basale vragen over veroudering.
The UMCG is the knowledge driver for the Netherlands
and Europe with respect to healthy ageing. In the Groningen
Institute for Healthy Ageing fundamental and
clinical researchers and social and behavioral scientists
form a broad forefront of expertise that tackles the challenge
of age-related issues. The strength of the UMCG is
that it does not do this in isolation, but conducts its work
within the Healthy Ageing North Netherlands cluster. In
this cluster all the knowledge institutes, the Public Administration
and the business community work together
on increasing our knowledge in the area of ageing, and
how to valorize this knowledge. In 2011 an international
top Institute will be added to this knowledge center: the
European Research Institute on the Biology of Ageing
(ERIBA). In this Institute top scientists worldwide work to
find answers to basic questions about ageing.
ageing goed zien hoe fundamenteel onderzoek, klinisch
langdurige bevolkingsstudies in grote populaties geven
goud in handen. Hier loopt een groot aantal longitudinale
cohortonderzoeken en dat is niet voor niets. Noord-Nederland
Healthy ageing
Within the setting of the UMCG the focus on healthy
ageing makes it clear how fundamental research, clinical
research and patient care are interlinked. Fundamental
knowledge about the biology of ageing is invaluable to
expose genetic factors and mechanisms at cell level. Bio
banks are the next step: long-term population studies in
large populations give an insight into other factors that
also determine whether a person becomes ill or not. In
this respect the UMCG is sitting on a goldmine. A large
number of longitudinal cohort studies is underway here
and there is a good reason for that. The north of the
Netherlands is ideal for such research: the composition
of the population is stable, they don’t move away, people
are prepared to participate in studies and the population
is representative for north-west Europe.
The knowledge acquired this way is essential for prevention,
diagnostics and treatment.
LifeLines
bevolkingsonderzoek LifeLines moet inzicht geven
in alle risicofactoren: erfelijke aanleg, leefstijl,
stofwisseling, voedingsgewoonten, bewegingspatroon,
infecties, stress, blootstelling aan
schadelijke stoffen en dergelijke. In deze biobank
worden gedurende dertig jaar alle relevante
medische en sociaal-culturele gegevens van families
uit Noord-Nederland verzameld en onderzocht:
165.000 mensen gaan uiteindelijk meedoen.
individueel maatwerk mogelijk maakt. In een
situatie waarin de problematiek van patiënten door
hun leeftijd steeds complexer wordt, leidt een
individuele benadering tot herstel van functies
en/of een betere kwaliteit van leven.
Onderzoek
LifeLines
Not every carrier of a certain gene or a certain
mutation becomes ill. The LifeLines longitudinal
population study must provide an insight into all
the risk factors: genetics, lifestyle, metabolism,
eating habits, exercise pattern, infections, stress,
exposure to harmful substances etc. Over a period
of 30 years all the relevant medical and sociocultural
data on families from the northern part
of the Netherlands will be collected and
researched in this bio bank; 165,000 people will
ultimately take part.
Unprecedented storage capacity is required to
store the accumulated physical samples and data.
The UMCG is building a freezer facility the size of a
sports hall and, together with the Rijksuniversity
Groningen and other partners, is working on
technology for the analysis of the huge quantities
of data.
In the clinic, the findings from LifeLines will lead
to innovative, effective, life course-related
diagnostics, treatment and care. What is special
about LifeLines is the fact that this knowledge
makes individual customization possible. In a
situation where the problems of patients become
increasingly complex because of their age, an
individual approach results in improved physical
functions and/or a better quality of life.
Verouderingsonderzoek heeft groot
maatschappelijk nut
Ouderdomsdiabetes neemt wereldwijd epidemische
zoals geneesmiddelen, gezonde voeding, hulpmiddelen
en gerichte gedragveranderingsprogramma’s. Het is ontzettend
belangrijk dat bevindingen worden getoetst in
grootschalige bevolkingsonderzoeken en daar zijn we in
Groningen heel sterk in.”
Research into ageing has major social benefits
Dean Folkert Kuipers was a medical biologist when the
discipline did not even exist. Healthy Ageing is the leitmotif
in his research: disruptions in metabolic processes
in the liver, the intestines and the fatty tissues with as
the ultimate outcome diabetes and cardio-vascular
disease. Folkert Kuipers has been Dean at the UMCG
since 2008 and is responsible for the development of
research in the area of healthy ageing. “These past years
I have spent a lot of time working on type 2 diabetes, an
illness linked to obesity. Around the world late-onset
diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions and is therefore
a risk for society as a whole. It intrigues me no end
that we are partly to blame for this illness ourselves, by
not exercising enough, eating too much and eating the
wrong foods. It has also been proven that the nutritional
status before birth and shortly thereafter influences
the sensitivity for developing this disease: a lot is yet to
be learned in this area. The social benefits of research
into ageing are enormous. This is why it is necessary for
knowledge from basic research to find its way into
practical applications such as medication, healthy food,
medical aids and targeted programs for behavioral
change. It is extremely important that findings are
evaluated in large-scale population studies and that is
something we in Groningen are particularly good at.”
Vroeger ingrijpen
Koningin
Beatrix heeft veel belangstelling voor dit onderzoek. In
Ouders
krijgen adviezen hoe zij kleine veranderingen in hun levensstijl
kunnen aanbrengen.
Research into the treatment of obese children focuses on
children who are already overweight. Methods aimed at
achieving a healthy eating and exercise pattern are compared.
Parents receive advice on how to make small changes
in their lifestyle.
Early intervention
Increasing numbers of children are overweight. This has
consequences for their future, as being overweight at an
early age means there is an increased chance of cardiovascular
disease and diabetes when adult. The health problems
often start at a much younger age. The Groningen
Center of Expertise for Obese Children (GECKO) identifies
the risk factors for the development of obesity and
conducts research into treatment programs.
For the research into the risk factors 5500 children are
monitored until they are adults. This will make it clear
who will become overweight and who will not. It is also
evaluated whether obesity is linked to factors that are observed
very early on, even as early as during pregnancy.
This concerns both biological and social/environmental
factors. Queen Beatrix is very interested in this research.
In 2007 she attended a symposium during which, among
other things, the initial results of this study were presented.
Medicinae Doctor Petrus Camper (1722-1789)
He was an excellent physician with great
empathy for his patients, but also a versatile
researcher. In 1763 he was appointed to the
medical faculty of the Groningen Hogeschool.
Here he sought to find the clinical scientific
substantiation for the pelviotomy, an intervention
aimed at saving the lives of mother and
child when women with a very narrow pelvis
give birth. However, Camper’s main scientific
contribution is in the field of comparative
anatomy. While many of his contemporaries
based the classification of the animal kingdom
on discernible external characteristics, for
Camper the internal structure of animal species
was essential. He conducted research into the
similarities between the skeletons of humans
and animals and by doing so laid the
foundation for zoology.
The latest research facilities
It is not only the productive interaction between clinic
and science that makes the UMCG a challenging research
environment. The state-of-the-art research facilities
are extremely attractive to young PhD students and
established scientists from the Netherlands and abroad.
Virtually all the UMCG research is conducted within (inter)
national collaborations. In their capacity as coordinators
of a large number of international studies, our scientists
are able to bring together the top people in their field.
Their results are seen in numerous publications in the
most prominent international scientific magazines.
Fertile environment for young scientists
The UMCG monitors talented scientists from a very
early stage. Selected medical and dental students from
around the world are given the opportunity to complete
a challenging scientific education via the Honors Program
of the Junior Scientific Master Class (JSM). Through the
JSM students become doctors as well as scientists. In
this special education program the JSM works together
closely with the Graduate Schools. These are responsible
for the science-based Masters courses (Master of Science
degree, MSc) and for the PhD courses. One characteristic
of the Graduate Schools is the interdisciplinary and international
approach.
Samenwerking
Graduate School. Het gaat om PhD-projecten met
als thema’s hart- en vaatziekten, auto-immuunziekten,
nierziekten, kanker en transplantatiegeneeskunde. De
promovendi doen onderzoek zowel in Heidelberg/
Mannheim als in Groningen.
In the areas of research and education the UMCG very
successfully collaborates with other top institutes. In its
immediate environment the UMCG together with the
University of Groningen, the Hanze University
Groningen and the municipality of Groningen, is active
in the Agreement of Groningen. The parties jointly make
large investments in innovation and knowledge infrastructure,
with the objective of developing Groningen
into an international hub of knowledge and innovation
in the area of energy and healthy ageing. However, there
are also successful collaborations across the borders. A
number of examples follow below.
Germany
The UMCG has a joint graduate school with the
Onderzoek
Research as the driving force
The UMCG successfully collaborates with the business
community and has done so for many years. Early in the
60s, for instance, this resulted in the development of a
pacemaker. In the area of research there are collaborations
with major well-established multinationals in the
pharmaceutical and food industries, but also with smaller
companies. The UMCG is an important driving force in
the economy of the north of the Netherlands, not only
as the largest employer but also as the stimulator of innovation
in the area of technology and life sciences. The
long tradition in transplant medicine has resulted in a
considerable number of patents. These form the basis for
new economic activity. For instance, the company Organ
Assist now manufactures a pump system that flushes out
the internal organs during donor surgery. The system
was developed by the Surgery and Biomedical Engineering
Departments of the UMCG. The UMCG Biomedical
Engineering Department has created a new system
that allows for better storage of donor organs. This can
strongly increase the availability of usable organs.
aantal belangrijke genen.
UMCG. In 2002 ontving zij de ‘Nederlandse Nobelprijs’:
de Spinozapremie van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor
Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek NWO. Postma is lid van de
Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen
(KNAW) die haar in 2007 tot Akademiehoogleraar
benoemde.
appointed her to Academic Professor.
This appointment gives her the opportunity to further
initiate innovative research and stimulate young
investigators to perform translational studies, from
bench to bedside. Among her other honourary titles are
those of Visiting Professor at the renowned American
Harvard University. “A number of genes, located on
different chromosomes, are involved in the origins of
asthma and COPD. In addition there are genes that can
aggravate the disease. In Groningen we have the
unique opportunity to monitor asthma patients for
many years, in a few hundred even more than thirty
years. We have discovered that the ADAM33 gene plays
an important role in the deterioration of the lungs, both
in asthma and in COPD.” Professor Postma works closely
with research groups in Europe and in the United States.
Her motivation: “As a psysician, I know the burden of
asthma and COPD to the patient, it affects their daily
Ook buiten de transplantatiegeneeskunde levert de kennis
van het UMCG economische stimulansen op. Zo
bevinden zich inmiddels tientallen life sciences bedrijven,
zorgproducten of -diensten.
Outside the area of transplant medicine the knowledge
of the UMCG also generates economic stimuli. For
instance, a valorization officer screens all the research in
the area of Healthy Ageing for patent opportunities.
The Business Generator Groningen Foundation (SBGG),
a collaboration between, among others, the University of
Groningen and the UMCG, focuses on scouting for and
screening of patent-worthy ideas and generating new
spin-off companies in the field of life sciences.
Dozens of companies in the life sciences field, such as
the Meditech Center and the Biotech Center, are now
housed in two business centers in the UMCG grounds.
These companies utilize each other’s knowledge and
experience and that of the UMCG for the development
of new healthcare products or services. For instance, in
conjunction with the UMCG the Bedsite Handheld was
developed, a machine for the automated control of the
administration of blood products with the aid of barcodes.
regularly publishes in Nature Genetics. Her research at
the UMCG focuses specifically on type 2 diabetes - the
disease of old age - and coeliac disease, an intestinal
disease. She is one of the initiators of international
research into the genetics of these conditions and was
awarded a VICI subsidy for her research in 2005. This is
a Dutch subsidy that is only granted to world-class
Vlagtwedde-Vlaardingen
algemeen longverouderings-gen.
Vlagtwedde-Vlaardingen
In 1965 one of the first large epidemiological studies
started in the Netherlands: the population study in Vlagtwedde
and Vlaardingen. Over 8000 people took part.
The cohort study was concluded in 1990, but the data
from the databank still provide useful information in the
research into the origin of lung diseases. For instance, follow-up
research into mortality in this cohort has resulted
in the discovery that people with a higher airway sensitivity
have a greater chance of dying from COPD.
Research is currently being conducted into genetic causes
of reduced lung function in the Vlagtwedde/Vlaardingen
cohort. Reduced lung function is a normal phenomenon
of ageing, but in some people it is accelerated. This
can result in bronchial problems and diseases like COPD.
UMCG researchers have found that the ADAM33 gene is
responsible for an accelerated reduction in lung function
in the population as a whole and in patients with asthma
and (severe) COPD. This gene can therefore be considered
a general lung-ageing gene.
de opkomende eugenetica. Over de
volgens haar te weinig bekend om
Een enkele eigenschap kon iemand
tot een slecht mens maken, maar
dat nam niet weg dat hij tegelijk
ook goede erfelijke factoren kon
bezitten. Als voorbeeld noemde zij
Beethoven, wiens vader een dronkaard
was, maar “hijzelf een zegen
voor de menschheid”.
could make someone a bad person,
but that did not alter the fact that
at the same time he could have good
In 2001
PREVEND
More than seven percent of the Dutch population is in
the first stages of kidney damage and are therefore at
higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease and type 2
diabetes. This can be determined at an early stage by testing
the urine for the presence of the protein microalbuminuria.
This is one of the results of the PREVEND study
(Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease).
For this study all the inhabitants of the city of Groningen
were asked, in 1997, to complete a brief questionnaire
and provide morning urine. Of the 41,000 respondents,
8,600 persons were immediately invited for further examination.
In 2001 they were screened again. Thanks to
the early detection it is possible to start treatment at an
early stage, as a result of which expensive treatments and
hospital admissions are often no longer needed.
Antwoorden zoeken in stamcellen
In 2006 kreeg stamcelbioloog prof. dr.
hun onderzoeksveld. “Binnen afzienbare tijd moeten we
delende stamcellen juist langer. Daar is een plausibele
verklaring voor. Hoe sneller stamcellen delen, hoe
eerder de stamcelvoorraad ‘uitgeput’ raakt, hoe minder
lichaamsweefsels verjongd kunnen worden, hoe sneller
veroudering intreedt.
Looking for answers in stem cells
In 2006 stem cell biologist Prof. Dr. Gerald de Haan was
awarded a VICI subsidy for his research by the NOW.
This subsidy is awarded to excellent, very experienced
researchers who have successfully developed an
innovative line of research. Scientists with a VICI are at
the top of their research field. “Within the foreseeable
future we must be able to grow human stem cells
outside the body and cultivate them in different
directions, with a view of hopefully being able to transplant
them into people”, says De Haan.
De Haan and his researchers have identified genes that
are responsible for the speed at which stem cells
multiply. The team surrounding De Haan has also found
a link between these genes and ageing. “We have known
for some years that there is a link between the
production of stem cells and the ageing process”, says
De Haan. “Animals with stem cells that divide rapidly
don’t live as long, whereas those with stem cells that
divide more slowly live longer. There is a plausible
explanation for this. The faster stem cells divide the
sooner the supply of available stem cells is exhausted,
the less the body tissue can be rejuvenated, the faster
ageing occurs. It is possible that problems with the
transcription of the correct genes by the cell are the link
between stem cells and ageing. Research has shown that
the activity of these regulating genes declines as a result
of ageing.”
GIANTT
Groningen Initiative to Analyse Type 2 Diabetes Treatment.
GIANTT
Diabetes is a condition with many associated problems.
Complications of the veins and blood vessels are a possible
risk, but this can be delayed as much as possible
through proper regulation of the blood sugar level, and
treatment for high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
These values are measured at least once a year and based
on the outcome, the treatment is adjusted where necessary.
But what is the quality of the care, are extra care and
support needed and which patients get which complications?
To map out the answers to these questions the
UMCG, the physician’s laboratory Lab Noord, the Martini
Hospital and the primary care providers in the province
of Groningen started the GIANTT-project in 2004.
GIANTT stands for Groningen Initiative to Analyse Type
2 Diabetes Treatment. Treatment providers receive an
overview of the results of their practice, and therefore
targeted feedback on the results of the diabetes care they
have provided. It is also possible, for instance, to measure
the effect of new treatments for diabetes in practice.
Tiny Jaarsma
Zorg bewezen beter
Verplegingswetenschapper dr. Tiny Jaarsma heeft bij de
afdeling Cardiologie haar eigen onderzoeksgroep. Zij
onderzoekt hoe de zorg voor hartfalenpatiënten kan
verbeteren en of die verbeteringen heropnames kunnen
voorkomen of verminderen. Jaarsma werkte lange tijd
extra verpleegkundige begeleiding krijgen.
beter organiseren.
maatwerk nodig.”
Proven better care
Nursing scientist Dr. Tiny Jaarsma has her own research
group in the Cardiology Department. She investigates
how the care for patients who are suffering from
heart failure can be improved and whether these
improvements can prevent or reduce re-admissions.
Dr. Jaarsma spent a long time working in the Cardiology
Department as a nurse and started her research based
on her interest. She is now an internationally renowned
scientist. The way in which patients receive care is often
based on traditions. But are these nursing activities
effective? How are new insights being integrated? These
are the questions that drive Dr. Jaarsma’s research.
“The only legitimate reason for nursing research is
that it must improve patient care. Care can always be
improved, but you do have to show that it works or not”,
she feels. “Our study into the care of patients who are
suffering from heart failure has resulted in many insights
that can be directly applied to the provision of care. For
instance, patients who received very intensive support
do not tend to be in the hospital any less frequently, but
their stays are much shorter than people who do not
receive extra nursing support. Based on this conclusion
you can improve the care given to patients suffering
from heart failure.
Another insight, for instance, is that many patients
who are suffering from heart failure also suffer from
symptoms of depression during their hospital stay. A
standard aftercare program has proven to be inadequate
to help them combat a decline in the longer term. They
need customized care.”
Education
groot.
Topper in Geneeskunde
multidisciplinaire samenwerking minstens zo belangrijk
Students come to the UMCG from all over the world
to study Medicine, Dentistry or Human Movement
Sciences. There is also a lot of interest in training
programs like Medical Biology and Life Sciences, which
the UMCG organizes together with its science faculties.
This is not surprising, as the courses are highly respected
and the educational facilities are ultra-modern. In addition,
in the north of the Netherlands the UMCG is the center
for education and training for the healthcare sector as
a whole. The hospital is a forerunner in the development
of specialist courses for nurses and other professions
in the healthcare sector. The UMCG also takes the lead
when it comes to the development of new professions
in the healthcare sector and the associated training. This
way the UMCG also contributes to the future of health
with its courses.
At the top in Medicine
The UMCG has been in the top three of the best medical
faculties in the Netherlands since time immemorial.
This is not surprising, because the Groningen UMCG
continues to build on a consistent educational vision that
focuses not only on teaching physicians and dentists medical
knowledge and professionalism, but in which competencies
like communication and multi-disciplinary collaboration
are equally as important. In 2000 the UMCG
changed to a patient-oriented curriculum that has since
been developed further. The success of this modern vision
for the education and formation of medical students
continues to be proven by the high level of appreciation
of students, professors from fellow Universities and inspection
commissions.
Geen kloof tussen theorie en praktijk
“Een opleiding is nooit af”, zegt dr. Petrie Roodbol.
competentiegericht leren ingevoerd. Praktijk en theorie
hangen nauw samen. “De structuur van een opleiding
moet zodanig zijn dat iedere relevante verandering
ingepast kan worden. Het verpleegkundig beroep is
continu in beweging.
handelingen geoefend in gesimuleerde situaties
bijvoorbeeld met een angstige of agressieve patiënt.
Hoe je communiceert is ontzettend belangrijk.
In binnen- en buitenland is men erg geïnteresseerd in
het competentiegericht leren van het Wenckebach
Instituut.
Relatief dichtbij huis, in Mannheim-Heidelberg
The curriculum for the medical studies attracts international
attention: the UMCG is now advising universities all
Africa. The UMCG was also the first foreign University to
No gap between theory and practice
“An education is never finished”, says Dr. Petrie Roodbol.
Dr. Roodbol is head of the UMCG Wenckebach Institute
and teaches Nursing at the Hanzehogeschool
Groningen. She has been there since the start of the
Wenckebach Institute, which is responsible for
continuing nursing education, additional training and
refresher courses. The UMCG was the first in the
Netherlands to introduce competency-based learning.
Practice and theory are closely linked. “The structure
of a course must be such that all relevant changes can
be incorporated. The nursing profession is in a constant
state of flux, in the technical aspects because of new
equipment being developed, but also with regard to
new insights in the area of care. The lecturers at the
Wenckebach Institute spend part of their time working
in the nursing field. This allows them to successfully
combine practice and theory in their courses. In this
profession there should be no gap between theory and
practice. The nursing courses taught at the skills center
are a good example of this method. In practice, specific
nursing actions are never isolated activities. In the skills
center actions are practiced in simulated situations, for
instance with a fearful or aggressive patient. How you
communicate is extremely important.
In the Netherlands and abroad there is a lot of interest
in the competency-based teaching methods of the
Wenckebach Institute. You see hospitals that adopt the
method. And our most important test, the ‘competency
test’, has now become the national norm.”
handelingen. Communiceren met de patiënt en bejegening
zijn minstens zo belangrijk. Ook in de teaching
hospitals in Noord- en Oost-Nederland krijgen de aankomend
specialisten begeleiding conform de nieuwe vervolgopleiding.
The new medical specialist
The modernization of medical education is not limited
to medical studies alone. In the courses for medical specialists
the patient and the competencies to be acquired
are also a focal point. Needless to say, this is about much
more than adequately performing medical interventions.
Communicating with the patient and patient treatment
are equally important. In the teaching hospitals in the
north and east of the Netherlands the future specialists
also receive support in line with the updated continuing
education program.
together with the Hanzehogeschool Groningen. This
means that future dentists and dental hygienists are fully
Kinderarts Eduard Verhagen, hoofd
Algemene Kindergeneeskunde: “Leven
keer voor moeilijke keuzes te staan,
dilemma’s die je goed moet doordenken.
Je wilt tot het uiterste gaan om
afwegingen en neem je beslissingen.
Daar betrek je ook de ouders bij.
Zorgvuldig omgaan met het leven,
daar ligt mijn gedrevenheid. Hoe doe
Zij moeten in
een vroeg stadium dilemma’s kunnen
herkennen, en de tools hebben om tot
goede oplossingen te komen. Zodat als
ik later met mijn pasgeboren kleinkind
in het ziekenhuis kom, ik het kindje
met vertrouwen in handen van een arts
kan leggen. Omdat ik weet dat die niet
alleen technisch, maar op álle fronten in
Ensuring that tomorrow’s
Pediatrician Eduard Verhagen, Head of
General Pediatrics: “Life and death are
not very far apart in our department. As
a physician you are faced with difficult
choices time and time again, dilemmas
you have to think through carefully.
You want to go to the absolute limit to
explore all the options. Together with
the team you decide what is best for
this special child, together you weigh
up the choices and make decisions. You
also involve the parents in this process.
Treating life with the utmost care, that’s
what drives me. How do you do that?
I find it very important to pass this on
to the young physicians who are in
training with us today. They have to be
able to recognize dilemmas at an early
stage, and should have the tools to find
solutions. So that years from now, when
I come to this hospital with my newly
Illustere voorgangers
Illustrious predecessors
stellen dezer indicatie binnen zekere grenzen ben
Doctors who had never assisted in a difficult
delivery during their studies, that was quite
common in the 19 th century. Preparation for a
physician’s practice consisted of watching how
the Professor used the forceps. This changed in
1867 with the arrival of Professor Willem Sänger.
Sänger let students perform all obstetrical
interventions under his watchful eye. Nationally
this generated so much resistance that he
felt obliged to refute objections that women
giving birth were not living practice dummies in
the Dutch Magazine for Medicine. “His policy
was necessary”, said Sänger, “in order to allow
prospective physicians to acquire at least some
experience in interventions. I trust that people
Ruim baan voor jong talent
Voor de echte talenten Geneeskunde, Tandheelkunde
en Bewegingswetenschappen heeft het UMCG een
speciaal opleidingstraject.
Voortplantingsgeneeskunde. Jaarlijks doen in het UMCG
meer dan 100 studenten uit veertig landen mee.
Clear the way for young talent
For the real talents in Medicine, Dentistry and Human
Movement Sciences the UMCG has a special education
program. Students who are taking the MD/PhD program
can get their Bachelor of Medicine and their PhD in eight
years rather than the usual ten. These talents are given
every opportunity to blossom in Summer Schools, the
Junior Scientific Master Class and the Clinical Research
Schools.
The Summer Schools offer foreign students the opportunity
to familiarize themselves with the patient-oriented
study program of the UMCG. The Summer Schools are
linked to specific areas of interest of the students. There
are Summer Schools in the area of Pediatrics, Oncology,
Neurology and Neurosurgery and Reproductive Science.
Wenckebach Skills Center UMCG
Een miniziekenhuis met àlle faciliteiten voor medische
behandeling en patiëntenzorg. State-of-the-art. Hier trainen
Thanks to the Junior Scientific Master Class (JSM) students
who can and want to do more than the regular study
program demands of them can take an extra course
aimed at research. Part of the JSM is a course that is unique
to the Netherlands, in which Medical or Dentistry
students can combine their studies with a PhD course.
This extends the study with an appointment for the duration
of two years. This way the program enables students
to complete both their studies and their PhD in an eightyear
period (seven for Dentistry).
The objective of the Clinical Research Schools is to increase
the students’ interest in research. The Clinical
Research Schools offer PhD students an opportunity to
publish their research and gives research leaders an opportunity
to reinforce their mutual contacts.
UMCG Wenckebach Skills Center
A state-of-the-art mini hospital with all the facilities for
medical treatment and patient care. Here, surgeons
practice new surgery techniques in a virtual learning
environment, but also in a real OR with human material.
Here, multi-disciplinary teams use computer simulation
to learn how they can work together even better
and more efficiently during unexpected emergencies.
Nurses practice procedures in a simulated real-life environment,
all without being a burden on patients. All of
this has benefits for patient care, within and outside the
UMCG, because the UMCG Wenckebach Skills Center
is also available to care providers and medical practitioners
in the region. By practicing actions and teamwork in
the skills center professionals are not only better trained
in technical actions and difficult situations, but the mutual
communication also improves. This benefits patient
safety. The skills center also helps in establishing cohesive
care chains within the hospital: the facility regularly
encourages different disciplines to ‘sneak a peek’ at each
other’s procedures and learn from each other. The skills
center is important for the development of the actual
courses and training, certainly when it comes to interdisciplinary
and multi-disciplinary collaboration. In patient
care multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration
are the order of the day. The result – and therefore the
success – of many interventions and procedures depends
on good teamwork.
Doctors, nurses and specialists train their
skills on computer-controlled mannequins.
These advanced mannequins have realistic
bodily functions. Their condition improves of
deteriorates, depending on the actions of the
personnel treating them.
Not only do we have grown up mannequins,
we also have a child and a baby.
Ziekenhuisarchitectuur
Hospital architecture
Internationally the UMCG plays a leading role in the development
of hospital architecture. In the design of the
new hospital in the 70s a radically new approach was
used: a building where patients can feel comfortable and
where it is pleasant for employees to work. Until then,
hospitals had been cold, functional structures where the
doctor rather than the patient was the focal point. The
UMCG was the first hospital to do things differently. The
new construction concept resulted in a surprising interior
design with shopping streets and a lot of art.
aantal paviljoens. Na 1945 werd het ziekenhuisterrein
een wirwar van gebouwen en straatjes.
Organisatorisch vertaalde zich dit naar een situatie
waarin iedere hoogleraar zijn eigen koninkrijkje
bestierde.
huidige UMCG vorm. Een voor een werden paviljoens
afgebroken en kwamen alle klinieken onder één
dak. In 1997 werd het UMCG geopend door prinses
Margriet.
The UMCG, with its striking entrance at the Hanzeplein,
is not the first new addition to the hospital.
Around 1900 a beautiful new teaching hospital was
built at what was then the edge of the city.
Completely in line with the vision of those days,
each specialization was given its own pavilion.
The hospital had a total of 390 beds and had the
very latest technological ‘gadgets’. For a long
time this hyper-modern hospital complex was the
classic example of hospital construction in the
Netherlands. As a result of the rapid development of
medicine the number of specializations increased and
therefore also the number of pavilions. After 1945
the hospital grounds became a maze of buildings and
streets. From an organizational point of view this
translated into a situation in which each Professor
ruled his own little kingdom. The pavilion structure
also obstructed multi-disciplinary collaboration.
By the 70s everyone was looking forward to a new
building that would be more accessible to patients,
more efficient and user-friendly. The UMCG as we
know it today was given shape in a construction
process that lasted nearly 20 years. One by one
pavilions were demolished and all the clinics were
brought under one roof. The UMCG was opened in
1997 by her royal Princess Margriet.
Het positieve effect van kunst
Net als de winkels en terrasjes
leidt ook kunst de aandacht af
van het ziek zijn. Of mensen het
nu mooi vinden of niet, iedereen
heeft er een mening over. Een
kunstwerk kan ontroeren of
troost geven, herinneringen
oproepen, een blij gevoel geven…
Daarom is er in het UMCG veel
kunst te zien. De kunstwerken
zorgen bovendien voor een
vriendelijke uitstraling en
voor herkenningspunten in het
gebouw.
Helend gebouw
Gebouwen kunnen ziek maken en helen. Onderzoek
buurtbewoners tegen. Op die momenten voelen zij zich
even geen patiënt meer.
Healing building
Buildings can make people ill, or have a healing effect.
Research has shown that the hospital building affects the
healing process. The exterior, the interior design, the atmosphere,
the views, the use of color… all these affect
the well-being of the patient. If patients are comfortable
and positive then this is good for the healing process.
City within the city
UMCG feels that patients have to be able to continue to
participate in society. This is why the hospital has brought
the outside world into its walls. The result is a city within
the city, with a bookshop, a hairdresser, a chemist, a pharmacy,
cafés, a travel agency and much more. There is
even a supermarket. Patients who are capable of leaving
their bed meet visitors, employees, students and local
residents in the inner streets of the UMCG. This allows
them to temporarily stop feeling like a patient.
The positive effects of art
Like the shops and terraces, art
also distracts the attention
from being ill. Whether people
like certain works of art or not,
everyone has an opinion about
them. A piece of art can move you
or comfort you, evoke memories,
make you feel happy… this is why
there is a lot of art to look at
in the UMCG. The artworks also
contribute to a friendly
atmosphere and create points of
recognition in the building.
neemt in maatschappelijke discussies. Die continue
dialoog over nieuwe denkbeelden, nieuwe visies ontwikkelen
Social responsibility is one of the competency areas
that is important to the UMCG. This can be seen in the
courses and training programs, but also in how the UMC
presents itself as a knowledge institute. It can be seen, for
instance, in the Public Medical Academy that the UMCG
started in 2008, but also in the subjects with which Groningen
takes the lead in social debates. This continuous
dialogue with new ways of thinking, the development of
new visions and the debate about these visions, within
the scientific field and in constant interaction with society:
that is the material characteristic of the ‘scientific
business’ that is the UMCG.
Bridge between citizens and top-level research
Sickness and health are subjects that are of great interest
to the public at large. With the Public Medical Academy
the UMCG wants to bridge the gap between the top level
research conducted in the UMCG and this public interest.
Top researchers and physicians from the UMCG
provide information about the latest state of affairs in
their particular field. No medical knowledge is needed to
attend the lectures. In fact, the speakers are known for
their ability to explain complex medical subjects clearly
and understandably. Through the medium of the Public
Medical Academy the UMCG aims to inform a broad public
about its research activities; this way the UMCG is
also publicly accountable. The UMCG is the first medical
organization in the Netherlands to organize a Public Academy
on this scale.
The UMCG has erected a unique
A hospital that prevents illness
Do hospitals only exist to make sick people better, or
should they be dealing with healthy people, too? The
UMCG expressly chooses to do both. For instance, the
GECKO study by the Beatrix Children’s Hospital looks
to find risk factors for obesity and researches the effectiveness
of treatments for overweight children. The longterm
population study ‘LifeLines’ is a unique three-generation
study in which the health development of 165,000
people is monitored for 30 years. The results will lead to
improved prevention and new treatment methods. Participants
can join the study anonymously, but can also
choose to receive feedback about their health situation
after every visit. The UMCG feels that this type of customized
prevention is the way of the future.
Illustere voorgangers
Eerste vrouwelijke arts
Zo’n
zeventig jaar nadat Aletta Jacobs haar studie
steeds ‘onvrouwelijk’. Maar Aletta Jacobs werd
werkelijk dokter. In haar huisartsenpraktijk in
in Nederland. Tegenwoordig studeren
er meer meisjes dan jongens geneeskunde.
Illustrious predecessors
First female physician
For many centuries the profession of physician
was the exclusive domain of men. Women were
prohibited from studying. In 1871 the medical
faculty of Groningen stuck its neck out by
being the first to admit a female student: Aletta
Jacobs. Still, it would be a long time before all
the courses would accept women and before
it became common practice for a smart girl to
attend university. About 70 years after Aletta
Jacobs started her studies public opinion still
held that studying was ‘unfeminine’. But Aletta
Jacobs definitely went on to become a physician.
In her primary care practice in Amsterdam she
focused on providing healthcare to the poor
and made contraceptives available to the wives
of workers. Jacobs also played an important
role in the battle to give women the right to
vote in the Netherlands. These days there are
more women than men who study medicine.
ouders - passieve of actieve levensbeëindiging toe.
is gezet.
Ondertussen
The boundaries of medical intervention
There is no hospital in the world that wants to get burnt
by this issue, but it is a hot item around the world: the
boundaries of medical intervention in newborns. Some
babies are so ill and suffer so terribly that they can have
no expectations of ever having a quality existence. In
these cases physicians will sometimes practice passive or
active euthanasia with the permission of the parents, not
just in the Netherlands but all around the world. This was
a tacit practice until, in 2004, the UMCG and the Public
Prosecution Service formulated a protocol with the objective
of making euthanasia transparent and verifiable.
This Groningen Protocol sparked heated debates in the
street, in the media and all the way to the Vatican. The
positive result is that the distressing situation of these
newborns, who have no chance of a decent life, has been
put on the ethical agenda. On the very few occasions
each year that physicians and parents are faced with the
difficult decision of ending the life of a baby, the protocol
provides a guideline for hospitals in the Netherlands and
abroad. Meanwhile, physicians in Groningen continue to
look for options to give these children quality of life instead
of a gentle end.
ziekenhuizen.
De ziekenhuisarts is opgeleid binnen meerdere
specialismen en kan daardoor complexe zorgvragen integraal
benaderen.
The development of the nursing profession
Should all routine medical actions be performed by a
physician, or can a nurse take on some of them? Inspired
by medical practices in countries like the United States
and Great Britain the UMCG, in the 90s, introduced new
professions in the healthcare sector that fell between the
profession of nurse and that of physician: the nurse practitioner
and the physician assistant. The hospital delivered
the training for these professions in-house. The nurse
practitioner is now a familiar phenomenon in all Dutch
hospitals. He or she is a nurse who has been trained to
perform a number of clearly described and protocolled
medical actions under the supervision of a physician. The
physician assistant does roughly the same, but can have
different preparatory training. A nurse practitioner is employed
for a certain category of patients within a specialization,
whereas the physician assistant works across the
full width of the professional field.
Other new professions in the healthcare sector
The UMCG is also developing new specializations that
are not in-depth specializations but rather covered the
full width of the professional field, such as a hospital physician
and emergency physician. The hospital physician is
trained in a number of specializations and can therefore
approach complex healthcare requirements on an integral
basis. The emergency physician is trained to intervene
in all areas of critical care.
