TEKST 9 1 2 “I come from a racing background – all the members of my family are really into horse racing. As long as I can remember, we’ve spent our week-ends at a racecourse somewhere in the country. I always loved going along and seeing all the horses, but when I was 12, I started to get interested in placing bets. At first I used to give my father a pound and he’d place the bet for me, but as I got older I placed the bets myself. 4 5 Gradually I got more and more excited, watching the horses thunder along the racecourse towards the finish. I’d be screaming like mad if my horse won. By the time I was 14 all my pocket money went on racing. I read all the racing papers, trying to pick up tips and following what my father did. On my way home from school I started going into bookmakers’s offices, at least three times a week. For 16-year old Jane from Somerset betting 1) has become an obsession. Here she tells how it’s taken over her life… 3 When you are under 18 it is against the law to place bets. But I’m tall and I’ve always looked older than I am, especially with makeup on. When you lose money the only thing you can think about is putting more money on the next horse, telling yourself you’ll get a big win next time. Horse racing is my life. When I’m a bit short of cash I beg my father to give me my pocket money earlier, saying I’ve got to get deodorant or something for school, but I think he doesn’t believe me any more. When I first started gambling my friends used to ask me to place a bet for them too, but now they say they are worried about me. They think I won’t know when to stop. I tell them I’ve got it all under control.
