Lmoet hebben toen zij Kunstlicht oprichtte, een ‘En toen was er licht.’ Dat is wat Jacqueline de Jong negen jaar geleden gedacht eenmanszaak met daar omheen een kunstenaarscollectief. Nu, negen jaar en vele lichtobjecten verder, ziet zij opnieuw het licht, maar dan in een podium voor kunstenaars in functioneel design. Het roer gaat om. > lichtspecial Je loopt erlangs en je denkt: wat is dit? Een etalage vol lampen, tassen, paraplu’s, vazen, in een schitterend monumentaal pand in hartje Tilburg. “Klanten komen soms binnen met de vraag wat dit is. Ik heb vaak de neiging om te zeggen: een banketbakkerij!” Lachend legt Jacqueline de Jong, eigenares van Kunstlicht, uit hoe dit zo gekomen is. “Aanvankelijk was dit een atelierwinkel, waar ik de lichtobjecten zowel ontwierp, maakte en verkocht. Maar ik ontwerp nu veel minder en hou me meer met de handel bezig. De zaak krijgt daarom ook steeds meer een winkeluitstraling.” In 1999 kreeg De Jong, afgestudeerd in Monumentale Vormgeving, het idee om lampen te gaan ontwerpen en maken, “want Nederlanders zijn een pragmatisch volkje en wat je maakt moet wel een functie hebben”. Van begin af aan zijn er ook andere kunstenaars bij haar eenmanszaak betrokken. Ieder werkt in zijn eigen discipline, maar alles gebeurt onder dezelfde noemer: toegepaste kunst. De combinatie van design en functionaliteit komt overal in de winkel terug. Een enorme stoffen wereldbol met een diameter van één meter blijkt een zogenaamde Oolaalaabol te zijn, ofwel: een ronde stoel. En een melkwitte lamp blijkt zó ontworpen te zijn dat een lelijke spaarlamp ineens een designuitstraling krijgt. Ook de tassen van Hi- Di-Hi, de stormparaplu en de Tumbly zijn in haar winkel te koop. “Dus nee, mensen: geen banketbakkerij, maar een toegankelijke designwinkel.” Kroonluchter Jacqueline de Jong werkt grafisch en haar lampen zijn voornamelijk gemaakt van metaaldraad, als een lijnenspel in de ruimte. Regelmatig komen er ook opdrachten voor grotere projecten. Het laatste grote project was het maken van een kroonluchter voor Theaters Tilburg, die tijdens klassieke concerten opgehangen wordt. Een opdracht met specifieke wensen, want hij moest inklapbaar worden, in verband met de geringe opbergruimte. “Het was een grote uitdaging, maar ik heb het wel gedaan.” Maar waarom nu zo’n groot project voor een lamp die alleen tijdens klassieke concerten opgehangen wordt? De Jong legt uit: “Dat heeft alles te maken met sfeer. Tijdens klassieke concerten is het podium nogal kaal en in zo’n steriele omgeving kom je niet zo lekker in zo’n concert.” Dus hangt daar nu haar kroonluchter, die extern wordt uitgelicht. Het glas in de lamp absorbeert de kleuren van de externe verlichting enorm en via beeldschermen wordt de lamp ook nog eens herhaald. “Je weet niet wat je ziet!” aldus de trotse ontwerpster. A way of living Bestond haar werk eerst voor driekwart uit ontwerpen en voor een kwart uit handel, nu gooit Jacqueline de Jong dat om. Zij wil steeds meer een podium zijn voor kleine kunstenaarsbedrijfjes die werk laten maken in eigen beheer. “Er is een hele positieve drive, een steeds breder aanbod van design en met name die combi tussen functioneel en design werkt erg goed. Ik wil steeds meer samenwerking tot stand brengen, banden versterken zodat niet iedereen op zijn eigen eilandje zit te flauwekullen. En het ene product kan het andere ook weer versterken.” De link tussen de verschillende kunstobjecten die zij verkoopt, is volgens De Jong sfeer. “Licht, design, muziek: dat heeft allemaal te maken met sfeer. Het is allemaal a way of living. Er is een onderstroom van lijnen die elkaar overlappen. Een jazzliefhebber heeft bijvoorbeeld andere objecten in huis staan dan een punkliefhebber.” Dat design en muziek gelinkt zijn, is ook terug te zien in bijvoorbeeld de Oolaalaabol: “Die komt duidelijk uit de lounge voort, je kunt al bijna gaan kijken hoe die twee elkaar beïnvloed hebben.” .
