Hoofstuk 5: Die post-apartheid verhaal?
p284
Vice (2010:335) reken wat wit mense moet doen is “to make themselves invisible and
white South Africans could do, is acknowledge that my/our ‘good’ childhood memories,
our (white people’s) so called successes were gained at a terrible and tragic cost to
fellow South Africans.” Dan gaan sy egter voort: “But for white South Africans
particularly, withdrawing from the debate, retreating into denial, self-indulgent
victimhood or belligerent defensiveness will keep us running on the same emotional
and political spot.”
(2011:35). Hy prys Vice se eerlikheid, “an honesty often culpably missing from the lives
of too many white people”, maar reken ook dat wit mense juis moet deelneem aan die
gesprek “but be mindful of how your whiteness still benefits you and gives you
unearned privileges.” Hy nooi wit mense om saam te stap op die pad: “The journey will
be worth it. But it requires discomforting honesty. We owe it to ourselves as a nation in
the making” (McKaiser 2011:35).
nuwe Suid-Afrika is.
The preamble to the South African constitution begins, ‘We, the people
of South Africa, recognise the injustices of our past’. It is a collective
recognition of the apartheid past as an injustice that has constituted the
post-apartheid nation. The commandment of the post-apartheid nation,
in other words, is to live against, be affectively opposed to, apartheid...
