separated from our children during the deportation we were subjected to<br />

recently. We were forced to live in places where we find no work and<br />

have witnessed the death of our children through starvation. We find our<br />

return to such places impossible. It is now in our utter desperation and<br />

suffering that we implore you in the name of God: Stop the continued<br />

separation of our families. Stop the humiliation we suffer as a<br />

consequence of constant hounding like animals and criminals. Prevent<br />

our removal to areas of starvation. Enable us to live as a loving Christian<br />

family free from oppression and fear; and for your courage and strength<br />

to make this a reality. Your brothers and sisters in Christ, the Nyanga<br />

Bush People.”<br />

Van Wyk (1991:80) is reg as hy sê: "Apartheid, both in its grand design and daily<br />

pettiness, degraded blacks to the level of semi-humans in the land of their birth...”.<br />

Groenewald (1986:42) noem dit die “belediging van apartheid.” Baie meer as die<br />

uiterlike, sigbare diskriminasie, was hierdie miskenning van swart mense se<br />

menswaardigheid die eintlike probleem met apartheid. Ek stel dit in een van die<br />

gesprekke só:<br />

Dit gaan nie oor goed wat ons aan mekaar gedoen het<br />

nie, dis sekondêr. Dit gaan vir my, en dit kom elke<br />

keer uit my gesprekke met die swartmense, ons hier,<br />

in my gesprekke met al die mense, in die goed wat ek<br />

lees, ons mis die uitgangspunt wat al verkeerd neig,<br />

ons vertrek van ʼn bepaalde punt wat mense in<br />

kategorieë sit, van wit en al die ander, en dan kan<br />

jy ook maar sê van beter en slegter, dit is hoe ons<br />

gedink het daaroor [Albert 6-221].<br />

Die ander kant van hierdie munt is natuurlik dat wit mense in hulle eie oë goeie mense<br />

was:<br />

En wat ek verder van die swartes geweet het was wat<br />

ek in die geskiedenis geleer het. Ons het geleer die<br />

boere was hierdie heilige mense wat nooit iets<br />

verkeerd gedoen het nie, en die swartes was hierdie<br />

barbare wat babatjies se koppies teen die wawiele<br />

stukkend geslaan het. Dis die persepsie wat ek gehad
