Jan Marijnissen. NOVA verzorgde aan het slot van de avond een rechtstreekse tvuitzending.
Voor het eerst was er in de Melkweg, inclusief Rabozaal, de nationale
FINALE VAN DE KUNSTBENDE, de landelijke competitie voor jong creatief talent.
De Melkweg heeft in de afgelopen drie jaar stapsgewijs een forse groei doorgemaakt.
De herinrichting van de organisatie wordt daar op dit moment op aangepast.
Het jaar 2009 was voor de Melkweg artistiek en qua media-exposure
een prima jaar. Toch zijn wij niet tevreden en dat komt door het tegenvallende
financiële resultaat. Andermaal is gebleken dat het handhaven van financieel
evenwicht voor een dergelijk grote kunstinstelling met zo weinig overheidssubsidie
van veel factoren afhankelijk is. Verstoringen in het programma-aanbod, dat
vergeleken met traditionele podia op zeer korte termijn tot stand komt, zorgen,
zoals in 2009 bleek, direct voor exploitatietekorten.
Voor dit jaar wordt op alle fronten gewerkt aan het op peil houden van programmering
en publiek en tegelijkertijd aan kostenreductie en inkomstenvergroting.
Het eerste kwartaal van 2010 is uitstekend begonnen wat betreft programma en
bezoekersaantallen, maar wij gaan ervan uit dat het nog te vroeg is om te zeggen
dat de gevolgen van de crisis en de komende bezuinigingen bij de overheid geen
effect op de bezoekers van de Melkweg hebben.
Desalniettemin, veel plezier met dit boekje!

At the greater manifestations much attention was directed at the visit of the Dalai Lama in June 2009. During
the NIGHT OF TIBET, the 73-year-old spiritual leader of Tibet gave an intense speech and various performances
could be seen. I VOTE EUROPE, an event that, like NIGHT OF TIBET, was organised by Bureau Booij, Klusman
en Van Bruggen in cooperation with Melkweg, saw a huge turn-up and boasted participants such as
secretary of state Frans Timmermans, Neelie Kroes and Jan Marijnissen. NOVA transmitted
a live TV-broadcast of the close of the evening. For the first time Melkweg, including the Rabozaal, hosted the
FINALS OF THE KUNSTBENDE, the national competition for young, creative talent.
Melkweg has experienced a tremendous step-by-step growth over the last three years. The restructuring of
the organisation is currently being adapted accordingly. 2009 was a fine year for Melkweg artistically and in
terms of media exposure. We are, however, not contented and this owes to the disappointing financial results.
Once more it has become apparent that, for a cultural institute that receives as little government subsidies as we
do, maintaining a financial balance is dependent on many factors. As was demonstrated in 2009, disruptions in
the programming offer, which is compiled on much shorter notice compared to traditional venues, make for
immediate operation deficits.
For this year great efforts are being made in every aspect to keep the programming and visitor numbers on the
same level while at the same time trying to reach a reduction in costs and an increase of income. The first quarter
of 2010 has proved a splendid start as far as programming and visitor numbers are concerned, but we assume
that it is still too early-days to claim that the effects of the crisis and the coming government-induced austerity
will have no effect on Melkweg’s visiting audience.
