Na het in alle opzichten voor de Melkweg succesvolle jaar 2008 laat het afgelopen
jaar wat meer ups en downs zien. De gebeurtenis die de meeste aandacht trok
en ook intern de meeste aandacht vroeg, was het gereedkomen en de ingebruikname
van de Rabozaal, de nieuwe, grote, multifunctionele zaal, die Toneelgroep
Amsterdam, Stadsschouwburg en Melkweg samen met de Gemeente Amsterdam
sinds 1998 ontwikkeld hebben.
Eind mei programmeerde de Melkweg een openingsweek in de Rabozaal met
vijf dagen lang concerten, dans- en theatervoorstellingen en manifestaties. Het
spits werd afgebeten door HET GALA VAN DE POPMUZIEK, dat ook in 2010 naar de Rabozaal
terugkeert.
Het bezoekersaantal van 2009 is op 400.000 uitgekomen, inclusief de 28.000
bezoekers voor Melkwegprogramma’s in de Rabozaal. De tegenvaller van het jaar
diende zich al vroeg aan, in de vorm van aanzienlijk minder internationaal muziekprogramma-aanbod
in maart en april in vergelijking met voorgaande jaren. Dit
lijkt tot nu toe het voornaamste gevolg dat de Melkweg ondervindt van de in 2008
ontstane wereldwijde economische crisis, want de belangstelling van het publiek
is in 2009 op hetzelfde niveau gebleven.
Ondanks het aantrekken van de programmering, dat onder andere zorgde voor
het drukste vierde kwartaal ooit, heeft de Melkweg het jaar met een tekort afgesloten.
Gezien de resultaten van de jaren ervoor is dit teleurstellend; verhoging
van de huur, hogere loonkosten door invoering van de 38-urige werkweek en de
opstartkosten van de Rabozaal-programmering zijn hier alle debet aan.
De Rabozaal heeft in de eerste acht maanden voor de Melkwegprogrammering
zijn waarde al bewezen. De concerten van Cesaria Evora, Goran Bregovic en zijn

After the year 2008, which was in every way a success for Melkweg, last year has shown more ups and downs.
The event that attracted most attention and also required most of our own attention was the completion and
inauguration of the Rabozaal, the new, large, multifunctional hall that Toneelgroep Amsterdam (Theatre Group
Amsterdam), the Stadsschouwburg (City Theatre) and Melkweg have been developing together with the Amsterdam
city council from 1998 onwards.
In late May Melkweg programmed an opening week in the Rabozaal with five days of concerts, dance and theatre
performances and manifestations. The opening event was the DUTCH GALA OF POP MUSIC, which will once more
return to the Rabozaal in 2010.
The number of visitors in 2009 amounted to 400,000, including the 28,000 visitors for Melkweg programmes in
the Rabozaal. The setback of the year was early in coming and took the form of a substantial decrease compared
to previous years in the international offer of music programming for March and April. For Melkweg this appears
as yet to be the most prominent effect from the worldwide financial crisis that started in 2008, seeing as visitor
interest in 2009 has remained at the same level.
Despite the programming picking up speed again, which, among a number of things, led to the busiest fourth
quarter ever, Melkweg has closed the year with a deficit. Given the results of previous years this is disappointing.
Contributing to the deficit are the rent increase, higher wages due to the introduction of the 38-hour working
week and starting costs for the Rabozaal programming.
The Rabozaal has already proven its worth for Melkweg programming in its first eight months. The concerts by
Cesaria Evora, Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra and especially
ex-Talking Head David Byrne all came out at their best, both in the eyes of the visitors and of the artists
themselves. The seated/standing format, which grants 500 visitors on the fixed seated stand a view on the stage
over the heads of 900 standing visitors, is unique in Amsterdam. The format is compact, has short view lines and
is still spacious due to the open character of the hall and its excellent acoustics; qualities that have also reaped
exclusively positive comments from the media on Melkweg programmes in the Rabozaal.
