For this issue the Qua Art-Qua Science working group found its in-
spiration in the national project of “Nanopodium”. The Committee
for Social Dialogue and Nanotechnology, initiator of Nanopodium,
gave four artists the opportunity to interact for a few months with
nanoscientists in their laboratories. This has led to several ideas and
concepts which, in turn, have resulted in some remarkable projects
that will be presented to you in the coming Qua Art-Qua Science programme.
A special incidental circumstance is that this project coincides
with the opening of the MESA+NanoLab at Twente University.
Once again it became clear that art and science ask the same fundamental
questions, but search for different solutions. Their relation to
untitled 2005, window, attaché case (Grand Piano made from both ).
the world forms the linking similarity. It is in that grey area between
the two disciplines that questions about dealing with complexity,
the new order between nature and culture, man and technology are understood, visualised, made tangible and sometimes even
answered. What is the significance of this? Is it just a matter of a superficial contact between two fundamentally different professions
or are they actually able to inspire each other? In our previous programmes we have, hopefully, been able to convince
you of this mutual inspiration. However, in the projects described here the aim is a specific collaboration in order to achieve
possibly similar goals. Questions and answers have been compiled in personal descriptions by the four artists concerned. The
whole project was headed by Lucien Hanssen who followed all the artists closely and gave a clear description of the processes
in his article. It was important for us as a working group to provide an insight into all this by means of this publication.
Merijn Bolink is the artist who carried out his project at MESA+. He will be the first to give a report of his research during a
Qua Art-Qua Science meeting. At the end of January the second pair of artists, Taconis Stolk and Sietske Sips (WLFR), will
give a presentation and show their work. Koert van Mensvoort will also be presenting his speech-making research (NOS news
25 okt.2010) into the NANO Supermarkt. Merijn Bolink creates things that have never existed before because he is curious to see
them in real life. He admitted this to me in 2004 during an exhibition at Art Twente. In the end, in his project of ‘Transcendental
Nano Candlesticks’ - the phenomenon of scale – he makes something visible that cannot possibly be seen. Does he transcend
himself here or is he showing us that art can broaden the outlook of science? All this has been given shape in a number of fascinating
and inspiring projects of artistic research which have resulted in the works of art described and shown in this issue.
We would like to thank all the participating artists, scientists and writers who, in close cooperation with us, have made this
possible.
naast nieuwsgierigheid, is opmerkzaamheid.
gemaakt. Gedurende enkele recente maanden hebben
kunstenaars meegelopen in de nanolaboratoria van het
Institute for Molecules and Materials in Nijmegen, het
MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology in Enschede en
het Center for Nano Materials in Eindhoven.
in kunstzinnige impressies. Het uitgangs-
Nanotechnology raises many new questions about human and world concepts, about societal relationships and about science it-
self. Questions that can not be answered by scientists and technologists alone. Because of the impact that nanoresearch results
will have, it is important as society to think about this at an early stage. Which role can art play in this respect? Art is able to draw
out social, cultural and moral dilemmas from a taboo sphere and visualize these in a controversial , even confronting manner. Art
can depict a reality that has just become a reality or still has to. Art can find words to experiences for which words barely exist.
Artistic research
The project The Art of Nanotechnology uses the togetherness of two types of world views: sciences and arts. This complementarity
leads to a fuller and richer understanding of possible societal meanings of innovations from nanoresearch. The imagination
which comes from artistic research has a layered configuration that is more capable to express the double fictive nature of an
emerging technology. Many nano applications are still science fiction and their societal impact social fiction. Scientists and artists
work from a basic curiosity to understand the world around us. Another important feature of both, in addition to curiosity, is
attentiveness. They see things that others can not see or understand. This insight can be used in developing a scientific experiment
or a concept for an artwork. In this representation of realities, science and art are pulling more together than they diverge.
They differ in their frames of reference, methods and objectives, but there is a similarity in how they connect to the world. Science
searches for the general and the understandable, art searches for aesthetic quality and general empathy.
This connection is an outstanding place where questions about a new order of nature and technology can be depicted, empathized
and understood. For several recent months, artists have walked around the nano laboratories of the Institute for Molecules and
Materials in Nijmegen, the MESA + Institute for Nanotechnology in Enschede and the Center for Nanomaterials in Eindhoven. For
artistic research it is important that the research lab is open to the practice of an artist. For the artist it asks an open attitude
toward the nanoresearch. The project is not about art in the traditional sense, focusing on a visual output or the representation
of nanoscience and nanotechnology into artistic impressions. The starting point is a work of art, whether or not on a nano scale,
sketchy or conceptual that makes societal implications of nano applications visible and negotiable.
Looking
At the beginning of the artistic research two questions raised. Can anything on nano scale be manipulated to make a sensory
experience on a human scale possible? And what does looking at the nano scale mean, what are we looking at? It is a mediated
and controlled observation. Therefore, we should beware of a uniform interpretation of the nano scale caused by imposed conventions.
Familiar habits, we must dare to let go. To get through the heart of things on a nano scale we may even need an alternative
observation system than our usual senses.
An artist has no proof, like a scientist, but makes a statement through a work of art. A question here is whether a work of art
without textual explanation can provide a good picture of the nano scale, the leap from meters to nanometers. Partly this will
depend on the stage where the work is exhibited. In addition, text can also be part of the work itself, referring to conceptual art.
L u c i e n H a n s s e n
Conceptual art is about poetizing meaning and not about rationalizing art. Aesthetics is not gone, but has become complex: the
aesthetics of concepts. Such ideas can also be used as a guide. They can be translated into those matters and those subjects
where the artist’s own knowledge and expertise come in. Artistic research develops something that was not there before, after
which it may have a life of its own apart from the artistic researcher.
Magnetic fragrances
Nanoscientists manipulate on nano scale in such a way that it has fundamental consequences on macro scale in physical, chemical
or biological properties of the new molecule or the new material. Taco Stolk and Sietske Sips have picked up the concept of material
as a work of art. A new way of thinking in technical design, so to speak. Thinking about underlying principles and properties
of materials, can lead to a new aesthetic experience that can be observed on a macro scale. These two artists with their research
partners in Nijmegen, look for combinations of two or more different properties of matter which together can lead to a new sensory
experience. The new experience must have imaginative power on a human scale, do something strange or give an unexpected sensation
- apart from direct practical use. At the same time they challenged the nanoresearchers to invent their own combinations.
Starting from their artistic research, both artists want to make magnetic fragrances. Together with the Nijmegen nanoscientists
and the right elements, cobalt oxide to which fragrances can be linked, they worked to this. Magnetic fragrances as a new tangible
sensory experience. A piece of extended reality so to speak. With the magnetic fragrance they want to show us what nanotechnology
can perform on a human scale and at the same time let us experience something that is almost counter-intuitive. If enough
of the new material is ready, they want to let visitors undergo something of this new sensation through a spatial installation. The
artists qualify this experience as real surrealism.
Nano candlestick
Merijn Bolink in his work focuses on the physical reality of matter and the appearance of it. And how he as an artist can change
this. For the practical implementation of his work in Enschede, he took two identical copper candlesticks. One candlestick he
wants to make as large as possible. From the other he sawed a tiny slice and brought it into the setup of the nanoresearchers,
allowing a layer of copper atoms in the image of a nano candlestick to precipitate on a wafer. The rest of the slice was put back
into the candlestick. Individual atoms belong to his working field in Enschede. Is something still what it is if you make an exposure
of it? Now that he got the chance to accomplish this on a nano scale, that question gets for him a new almost transcendent
dimension.
For the artist the remarkable fact exits that at this level the same central question arises as in his macro sculptures: the origin of
the material. Also here, he is fascinated by the temporary state of an object and the endless journey of its building blocks - now
individual copper atoms. To him it is important that the work he creates gets a visually recognizable form, which is coupled to the
nano scale and serves as a vehicle for the viewer to enter into the deeper meaning of the work. Besides the nano candlestick, the
second one has been cut into tiny pieces and send by letter at locations around the world which link on a geographical map in a
candlestick form. He surrenders to the scale, but always in combination with the actual existence of atoms. A scale as widest as
possible he realizes with the world candlestick, as smallest as possible with the nano candlestick.
Nanokandelaar
Denken in toepassingen
Nano Supermarket
Artist Koert van Mensvoort looked in his conversations with the Eindhoven nano scientists for edgy nano products. Daily products
that are not science fiction, but really science faction. Products which are likely to stay, they will get domesticated and in turn will
change our way of life. Such dependence can be swift. What once was edgy or freaky, is tomorrow ordinary and familiar. With his
work in the Eindhoven nano laboratory he embarks upon the intermediate area of the relationship between people and technology.
Next Nature, he names this new nature created by man and technology. From his next nature concept the artist provides a platform
for a way of looking at the world. He sees art as a form of societal commentary. He wants to depict that world we live in tomorrow.
The value of his project lies not in spectacular imagination, but in expression of how we think about our next natures. He is also
working on a stage to present the new products: the Nano Supermarket as an exhibition space. The supermarket is a place where
consumers almost automatically come into contact with new products and trends. Together with some colleagues he is working
on a bus, where the nano products will be on display. The combination of the nostalgia of the bus and the perspective of the edgy
products, renders a strong vehicle to visitors to relate to the novelty of nanotechnology as an opportunity for appealing imagination
of this next nature.
Connections
The artists have shown that the way to art is not appreciation, but understanding. Nanoscientists break through existing orders
and taboos. Artists challenge them to think further beyond applications. Thinking in applications is vulnerable due to the intrinsic
intent which narrows the gaze. One may look no further and miss important things. Many nanoscientists as do artists work at
two levels: finding verity and finding beauty. Participants in the project the Art of Nanotechnology are actually the connection
between those two levels. Therefore it does matter to affirm this connection and not to fall back on one of the two and again to
think in the classic opposition between sciences and arts.
The key question in the artistic research of Sietske Sips and Taco Stolk is about how nanotechnology implicates new forms of
aesthetics. They searched for new forms, new characteristics of aesthetics which provide a sensory experience on a human scale,
as they are the direct result of actions or structures on a nano scale. The Art of Nanotechnology has presented Merijn Bolink
an additional almost transcendent dimension, since it was possible for him to manipulate the fundaments of matter on an atomic
scale in the project. For Koert van Mensvoort the main question is not can we use technology on a nano scale, but how can we
handle this new nanotechnology. In our attempts to overcome nature, we always cause a next nature which just might be as wild
and unpredictable.
Beginning conversations
Art and science seek other types of solutions, but often draw the same questions. The project The Art of Nanotechnology has
spurred a new way of cooperation between the two domains. A cooperation that is not based on differences, but on agreements.
This complementarity wants to interpret the world in terms of explanation and experience. The Art of Nanotechnology reveals -
and empathizes - how humans relate to the nano scale. For many of us this scale goes beyond our powers of imagination. The
project will take us from this scale in a perceivable way to think about possible applications of nanotechnology in our own environment.
For the artists, it is important that this occurs with an open mind and without prejudices and vested stances.
verandering.
With each new development in any field, artists get involved. Much of our thinking is influenced by their work and ideas. Artistic
research arises from a visionary concept and a sense for reality. Artistic research represents by embodying. The project has
shown that cooperation between artists and scientists generates new depictions and meanings that are significant and useful in
a societal dialogue on nanotechnology. The results of artistic research, as shown in the following chapters, can be regarded as
onze verschillende werkwijzen elkaar uiteindelijk heel goed konden aanvullen.
I’m an artist exploring the world in sculptures. My pieces are usually made from their own subject matter and despite various
interventions they are physically identical to their origin. Pieces consist of apples and shoes, animals, flowers, books, cars, etc.
I rarely use regular artists materials.
The invitation to make art at the atomic level with nanoscientists, I accepted thankfully. Now I finally could approach the very
building blocks of the sources and even manipulate them! It is also great to be able to operate as a pioneer pretty much: worldwide
very few artists work with nanotechnology 1 , let alone in the Netherlands, we might be the first. Historians in the future
will state that in 2010 in the Netherlands at least some artists were working with nanotechnology.
Making nano art involves a lot of risks. The phenomenon of scale could very easily overrule all other layers of content in the
works. Another problem might be that due to the size each structure will be invisible, unless large quantities of particles can
be produced at once, or, unless the artwork is “observed” with an atomic force microscope, producing an interpretation of the
atomic artwork on a screen. These two problems I couldn’t elimininate really. My fellow artists Koert, Taco and Sietske started
from different levels and cleverly managed to exclude these problems, which I obviously am jealous of. However, I think our different
approaches did complement each other very well.
During the eleborate brainstorm all sorts of wild and less wild ideas
evolved: text shaped DNA molecules, nano-sculptures from an antique
golden coin, labeled ink balls, ideas for nano light- and sound experiments,
“Grey Goo’ videos on uncontrollable self-replicating nanostructures
destroying everything, etc.
After a visit to MESA+, UT’s Nanolab, I decided to focus on one of the
technical installations used to create and investigate new materials. It
is a pretty large, very costly and complex system developped to stack
and process elements in layers of only a few atoms thick. Surprisingly,
I was allowed to bring my own –really dirty- materials into the system.
I decided to look for a pair of inseparable objects, a sort of pendant,
one half of which would be the source for the nano sculpture, leaving
the other half for another sculpture in a dimension far away from the
lab. I also wanted my source to date from another era, long before my
birth. An antique object has a kind of ‘time depth’ that tells something
about the temporal existence of things and the time in which we now
Kandelaar A belandde in het nanolab.
live where something like a nano-lab exists. On an antique market I finally found a couple of Belgian, brass candlesticks dating
from 1860. This was the perfect source: two objects intended as pairs, antique, good of color and shape, made of suitable material
and, in fact, made to carry candles and thereby referring to light. And light is what is missing in the nano world: it’s always
dark over there.
Candlestick A was introduced in the Nanolab. Josée Kleibeuker, PhD student with Dave Blank and my loyal ally in the whole
process, had tested everything for feasibility and carefully prepared the process. An excerpt from the candlestick was separated
and shot upon with a strong laser 2 after which the atoms landed on a silicon mini wafer. The wafer with the special atoms was
then further processed with an ion beamer in a sterile environment. The phase in this socalled clean room was the highlight of
this nano art project to me. Vishwas Gadgil controlled the equipment with utmost precision and we were all dressed in white
suits. On a screen I witnessed live images showing my own antique copper atoms being shaped into the relief of the candlestick 3 .
It loomed in a few minutes, like the image on a polaroid. This sublime moment I experienced as seeing something humans are not
supposed to see. It reminded me of the moment when I observed the sun through a large telescope.
Candlestick B we cut in 144 numbered pieces. Each
piece was sent by mail to a carefully chosen address
somewhere in the world, accompanied with a text and
a link to a weblog: theworldasadrawingpad.blogspot.
com. All 144 addresses together form the contours of
the antique candlestick, but then as a huge drawing
with a size of 2000 x 6000 km, seen from space. The
recipients could trash the piece or keep it. In both
cases each piece would stay within its 50 km radius,
saving the drawing for several decades.
Conclusion
I would like to describe this project as a collective
attempt to produce a transcendent experience. Both
the nano and the giant candlestick are part of the
physical world, consist of atoms, have dimensions
and a place in time, but they remain invisible to us,
unless they are mentally reconstructed. At times I
manage to reconstruct them in mind, connecting both
ends of a spectrum, something I tend to describe as
Chandelier component with laser treatment marks and silicon wafer:
nanochandelier support
3 ‘Watching’ through an electron microscope, ironically, leaves traces on the image one observes: continuously firing electron ions on the subject will kick atoms out and
leaves a trace.
Conclusie
is daarom in grote overvloed aanwezig.
a scientific quest
In accordance to the artist who was looking for the smallest building blocks of objects to create a new visualization of the
original object on a totally other scale, the scientist makes a comparable quest in the nano-world of materials by studying the
origin of their properties.
As an illustration of such a quest, we want to discuss the case of carbon. In nature, you can find pure carbon in several materials.
Anthracite (coal), graphite as well as diamond (figure 1) exist of 100% carbon atoms. Nevertheless, these three materials
are totally different. Take graphite and diamond for example. Diamond has an extreme hardness, is colorless and a really good
electrical insulator. Graphite on the other hand has a very low hardness, is black and an electrical conductor. With a simple
scratch-experiment, we can easily show the difference in hardness (see figure 1). Without any difficulty, you can make a scratch
in glass using a diamond pencil, while graphite (like in a pencil) crumbles off while drawing on sheet of paper.
To get an idea of the origin of these differences in behavior, we try to understand how these two materials are formed. It appears
that the formation of diamond occurs under very high pressure and temperature. In nature, this used to be found only deep in the
earths crust, but currently we can also fabricate it artificially. Graphite, on the other hand, stabilizes under much less extreme
circumstances. Therefore, graphite is much more abundant in nature: How many pencils can you buy for one small diamond?
However, as a scientist, we will have to zoom in at the level of the building blocks, carbon atoms, to understand the extreme
differences in properties of these materials.
Using an X-ray beam, we can take a look into the nano-world of carbon where it becomes clear that the carbon atoms are ordered
differently in diamond as compared to graphite (figure 2). The structure of diamond can be characterized by three-dimensional
ordering: each carbon atom is bound to four other carbon atoms via a very strong chemical bond. Therefore, each individual atom
is positioned very rigidly, which is one reason for the hardness of diamond. For graphite, the structure has a two dimensional
ordering (in a plane) with only three neighboring carbon atoms. Each layer is rigid but the layers can easily slide with respect to
each other and, therefore, graphite is quite brittle.
Using this knowledge, the scientist is able to start constructing new types of structures. Up till now, using carbon: nano-tubes,
nano-balls and nano-plates (graphene) have been made (figure 2). The building blocks, carbon atoms, have remained the same,
however, the properties are again different from diamond or graphite. The nano-tubes are strong and very light; hence they can
be ideally used in fiber material, and has been widely applied as such like in cars, musical instruments and sports gear (figure
3). Furthermore, nano-tubes are also interesting for their excellent electrical and heat-conducting properties; they even beat
copper to it! For this reason they are more and more used in flexible solar-cells (figure 3).
Ever since the discovery six years ago the research into graphene is booming. This material is bound to make the future in electronics
such as LED illumination and in use for transistors (computers). The main advantage of all these (new) materials is that
carbon is extremely cheap. Many scientists are therefore working on new materials by synthesizing yet new forms of carbon
building blocks: the quest has far from ended.
Augustus in Amsterdam-Antwerpen.
The plastic arts are the discipline par excellence in the arts that is founded on visual observation. The work of the plastic artist
focuses on the exploration of the secrets of an unintelligible world. It is a misunderstanding to consider the plastic arts a medium
where feeling and emotion should play a dominant role. In the process whereby plastic arts are created, feeling and emotion
play a similarly inferior role, and thereby occupy a similar position, as they do in the case of scientific research, among which
nanotechnology.
Any possible excitement can only arise after a successful visualisation of the secrets that have been discovered. When during
the creation of the work of art personal feelings, emotional sentiments and intentions gain the upper hand, the artwork loses
its expressive power and ends up in the world of anecdotism. The plastic arts try to visualize and fathom all that it unintelligible
around us and in our existence in the world, by means of form and colour and using all kinds of materials and techniques.
The plastic artist makes visible what already exists, but is not yet seen. Therefore, after he has taken the first steps working
with, on or in the material, he is bound to the laws of his subject. The famous Italian director Frederico Fellini said about his
work: “When I start on a new movie I only direct the film myself for the first two or three days, after that the film directs me”.
And so the artist who disregards the demands that the work of art in the making place on him, ignores the essential conditions
underlying the structure and logic of that very work of art. The plastic arts demand objectifying the observation, concentration
without prejudice. The Swiss-French sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti often drew from observation and many times his
wife was his model. Usually, after a day of drawing in his studio, they went to their favourite pub. He cleaned up first, while
she went ahead. It frequently happened that when they met again in the pub, he asked her what she had been doing all day.
Apparently he did not draw the person he knew so well, but was looking for what he did not yet know.
As far as the work of art is concerned, it is not the subject that is important but rather the way in which it is observed during its
creation, in other words the way in which the observation is recorded in the form of an image.
During his entire life as an artist, the Italian artist Girogio Morandi (1890-1964) painted, drew and etched a well nigh countless
number of still lifes, always using the same objects: vases, plates, boxes, oil lamps, bottles and jugs. These still lifes reveal
everything about space and interspace, about form and restform, about distance, about size and proportion, about light and dark,
about breath and silence. But in particular about the tension all this creates in the image. His work is a plain statement that the
universe is to be found on our own table.
By way of conclusion, a quotation from the writings of Liezi, translated by the sinologist Jan de Meyer and published in 2008
by the publishing house of Augustus in Amsterdam-Antwerp. Liezi was a Toaist philosopher who probably lived somewhere
between the 4th century BC and the third century AD.This quote represents my view, the way in which the plastic artist looks
and observes.
“Gan Ying was an excellent archer from ancient times. He only had to draw his bow and the game would lie down and the birds
topple over. His disciple, by the name of Fei Wei, had learned from Gan Ying how to handle bow and arrow, but in ingenuity he
surpassed his master. Ji Chang, in his turn, learned the art of archery from Fei Wei. Fei Wei said to him: “If you really want to
master this art, you first of all have to learn not to blink your eyes”.
Ji Chang returned home and lay down underneath his wife’s loom, his eyes very close to the pedal. After two years he no longer
blinked his eyes, not even if the sharp point of the shuttle hit
the corner of his eye. He told Fei Wei who replied: “You’re not
there yet. You must learn how to look and then you’ll be getting
somewhere. When you look at small things as if they are
large, when you see that which is hardly visible as if it is there
for all the world to see, come and tell me”. Chang attached
a louse to a hair from the tail of a yak, hung it in front of his
window and fixed his eyes on it, gazing south. After ten days
the louse had gradually grown in size and after three years it
looked like a wagon wheel. When he looked in the same way at
other things, they became hills or mountains, each and every
an arrow of raspberry wood from Shuo and took a shot at the
louse whose heart he pierced without breaking the hair taken
himself on the chest and said: “You’ve got it!”
Kunstenaars moeten in
WLFR is a brand for concept and media art with headquarters in Amsterdam.
Originated in 1993 as a thought-experiment of Taconis Stolk, currently co-coached by Sietske Sips.
Transition, tradition and the future
The world is in transition, as is our society and art. Summed up in that order, it might seem that art is in transition because world
and society are changing. This is partly true, of course. Developments in society— whether they be scientific, technological, or
of any other social nature— are observed, reflected and absorbed in the art of their times. In a healthy situation art can be a
driver of such developments; not merely reacting to new possibilities, but creating them too. Art can facilitate the progress of
new visual languages, new composition techniques and movements. But art can also create surprising opportunities in society
as a whole: new ideas and visions, frameworks, technologies, and sometimes even bring about a reordering between social domains—
including art itself. In a balanced society, art is continuously in dialogue with morality, technology, science, politics and
the economy. And as in every good debate provocation will occasionally occur, new insights will be introduced, and discussions
will be held, but listening will also take place.
The transitions of our time are quite turbulent. Developments in science and technology happen more quickly than ever before.
And changes in social, cultural, economical and ecological realms are taking place just as rapidly. Art does not enjoy a comfortable
position: for the first time in recent decades, art’s central role in society no longer appears to be as self-evident as it
once was. Within this pandemonium of change, it seems as if art is clinging more strongly to its traditions, to a world in which
the techniques used are understood, and where differences between the various disciplines are clear. Art seems as reluctant to
move forward from a conventional, unequivocal definition of art practice and culturally-correct stances towards, for example,
politics, as it is to leave behind an economic system within which it has acquired a trusted position. The danger of this, in itself
understandably reserved position, is that the displacement of the arts from the centre to the periphery of society may become a
self-fulfilling prophecy. There may come a time when no no one listens to its provocations, and when artistic experiments cease
to trickle through to the rest of society. The danger is that all of art-- not only the inhospitable, interior areas-- may become an
obscure, social phenomenon.
To regain a serious position in the dialogue with the other social domains, art should learn to critically re-examine its position.
Each tradition, every dogma should be open for discussion. Artists should debate with themselves and with each other. Of
course, not every artist can throw all traditions overboard. But art should show that it is not hanging on to the past out of a fear
of the future, and it should do so by reaching an accord with the future.
WLFR and the world
WLFR could be described as being an artist. It has a number of characteristics in common with an artist: it develops projects that
technologie.
w l f r
could be described as works of art; it has produced a consistent body of works, in terms of content as well as form; it possesses
an artistic style and character that has changed, improved and broadened over time; and, it positions itself as an artist would
within the debate between different social variables.
However, WLFR does not exist in a human sense. WLFR is an abstracted character, like a brand, and it operates much like a fictional
character: a personality that follows its own logic and emotions as it interacts with the world it inhabits. Rather than being a
fixed set of behaviours, it is a combination of characteristics that enable the taking of a new position in every arbitrary situation,
which in turn, like a fictional character, can change. It grows in its universe, crystallises, and sometimes also changes radically.
WLFR has developed itself as a brand in the world of today, in the midst of other brands. And whereas commercial brands are
entrepreneurs operating among abstract personalities, it is a researcher. Not primarily involved in trying to sell its products. It
is a brand which is primarily inquisitive about the world, and the universe beyond it. Developping artistic projects and presents
artistic research results. It takes its own position as an abstract character into account as part of its research programme and is
also constantly trying to reposition itself, sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing, but continually evolving a personality.
WLFR was first conceived by Taconis Stolk in 1993, as an experiment to investigate to what extent an abstracted personality
could be educated to become an artist. Since then, several other people have become involved in its development. Currently,
Sietske Sips is WLFR’s co-parent.
Character, conceptualism and artificiality
How would one describe the personality of WLFR? It is certainly a fundamentalist. Not in the threatening sense often employed
in the media these days, but in terms of being a ‘fundamental researcher’. WLFR enjoys the fundamental questions, minimalism,
conceptualism, extreme scale differences, unexplored terrain and thought-experiments. WLFR adores sets, collections and lists.
Nature is also favoured, but only on either its smallest and largest scales, not on a human scale per se. It is drawn to abstraction,
artificiality, precision and purity, to a world without humans, but at the same time a world that still contains the conceptuality
of modern culture. It also enjoys the brilliance that can emerge from the cooperation between science, technology and nature,
the ambiguity of human perception and reasoning, is attracted to the obscured boundaries between fiction and reality, and
unusual connections between art, design and marketing, as well as systems, but mainly for use in investigating their exceptional
situations.
WLFR projects rarely lead to unique, non-reproducible art objects in the traditional sense. The human, personal touch of artworks
is never celebrated— if human elements are found, they are approached in general terms— for example, the universal
within the phenomenon of individual failure. WLFR is insensitive to the traditional boundaries between disciplines, either within
or outside the arts. Projects relate to all the senses, to conceptual thinking, and to any usable technology and is not a pure
‘visual artist’, for example. It does not originate from this idiom, and attempts to take a critical position with respect to the visual
arts, but it does nevertheless make frequent use of visual elements. ‘New media’ is not narrowly-defined as media produced
by modern electronic technologies. Marketing is a new medium, too. There are many other similar existing media that are not
necessarily hi-tech, but new as artistic media. WLFR resists the popular opinion that aesthetics are no longer relevant in art.
The phenemenon of scale - The art of Nanotechnology ❘ 37
w l f r
nieuwe niveaus — zoals in conceptualiteit.
Enkele
voorbeelden zullen hier passeren.
zeer basale vormen ontstaan.
Transplant, opstelling, 1998’ (Foto Mark Weemen)
gebracht.
w l f r
Art should become less concerned with beauty and more involved with other social phenomena, instead of the other way around.
And more correctly involved in a deep investigation into meta-aesthetics, into the discovery of beauty in unexpected places and
on new levels— as in conceptuality. WLFR is not always primarily concerned with creation, but more essentially with exposing
phenomena, relations or patterns that facilitate a new view of the world.
In recent years WLFR projects have demonstrated its diverse areas of interest in continually varying combinations. Its character
becomes apparent through the projects described below— in terms of its consistency, but also in terms of its evolution.
The performance Transplant (1998) consisted of a series of short compositions for chemical reactions. In this physical nature is
presented as a composer. A small table on stage shows a very simple laboratory set-up. A person comes onto the stage, sets off
a chemical reaction and exits again. The audience sees the table and the set-up and listens to the sounds, amplified by contact
microphones, that the reaction creates.
Begun in 1999, PARR is a research project regarding
‘nano-aesthetics’: the creation of a form on
the smallest possible scale. For this project, a tiny
imaginary universe of two dimensions was created,
with only three ‘natural laws’: There is a five
by four grid of positions, to give a possible twenty
positions in total. Between two neighbouring points
(horizontally, vertically or diagonally) a connection
may, or may not, exist. Visual representations of
very basic shapes can come into existence through
these possible connections. The research focuses on
the question of whether relationships can be found
between specific numerical relations (the number of
points and the number of connections on the grid) on
one hand, and particular aesthetic categories, types
of shapes that can be created, on the other hand.
It turns out, for instance, that numerical relations
involving prime numbers (such as seven points and
eleven connections) produce shapes that, as simple
as they are, appear to be organic more often than in
other numerical relations. To this point, the project’s
results have found their way out into the ‘macro’
world in two forms: as computer-generated animations,
and as a growing series of computer-generated PARR, 7/9 examples, 1999
group within the Royal Academy of Arts). The Academy launched a new Genetic Design programme: a study programme in which
students using genetic modification techniques learnt to create new life forms as works of art. The introductory brochure contained
the curriculum, an admission form and the descriptions of a collection of pilot projects from the preceding year. Projects
included an ‘Eternal Guppy’ that could live for 150 years and could become a family heirloom, with ownership being ritually
transferred from one generation to the next, and ‘Audio Fungi’, a mushroom that would make a whistling noise when launching
their spores, creating an autumnal symphony in the woods. The project aimed to investigate aesthetic possibilities as well as the
ethical debate around the role of art in these new technologies. While the programme and all of its pilot projects were entirely
fictional, the project still caused a media furore, in which proponents and opponents hotly debated the issues.
The contemporary consensus among physicists is that our universe has
the smallest possible units of distance and time: Planck length (indicated
as lP) and Planck time (indicated as tP), respectively, are named after the
German physicist Max Planck (1858-1947). We could call these units the
pixels of our universe. pWf is an umbrella project that began in 2008, within
which several larger and smaller individual projects will be developed.
The basic concept of the pWf project is the recalibration of the different
units we use to measure and calculate space and time in such a way that
they become harmonic with lP and tP. A first sub-project which aimed
to establish a perceptible relationship between the human scale and the
‘pixels of the universe’ took place in 2008. In it, visible and audible harmonics
of lP and tP were used as values for a walk-through sound installation
Genetic Design, Brochure, 2003
in the old city centre of Dordrecht— as part of the Wormhole exhibition.
A line of 687.5 metres was laid out across the city centre. This distance is
the 125th octave of lP. On and around this line, with the aid of an iPhone app developed for the exhibition, a sound installation in
which the timing and the sound frequencies were all octaves of tP, and all spatial differences were defined by octaves of lP was
audible. While walking through Dordrecht, listeners could imagine themselves as being in harmony with the smallest building
blocks of our universe.
WfNn (2010): Research into the surreal reality between nano and macro scale. This project is an active collaboration with the
Nanolab at Radboud University in Nijmegen. WLFR’s general approach in developing nano art is to use the possibilities of nano
scale creation to facilitate new human scale experiences. By definition, nano scale artworks are invisible to humans. Such
works can be made visible using scanning tunnelling microscopes, but these are essentially reconstructions and, moreover,
The phenemenon of scale - The art of Nanotechnology ❘ 41
op nanoschaal zijn voor mensen per defini-
w l f r
tie onzichtbaar.
Zoals nano-wetenschappers
uiteindelijk tot constructies,
materialen komen die op menselijke schaal
Genetisch ontwerpen, project Audiozwammen, 2003
beeld, geluid of tast.
such experiences are to a large extent influenced by the aesthetics of the enlarging technology itself. Nano scale artworks
that can only be seen by means of this kind of intervention run the risk of being dominated by the scientific and methodological
aspects of accessing the nano scale, than about the small item on view at the end of the tunnelling microscope. As with nano
scientists developing constructions and materials that result in concrete practical uses on the human scale, it is important for
artists working on a nano scale to create directly perceptible situations. This could certainly become a conceptual experience,
but it is interesting to investigate the possibility of new sensory experiences. The emergence of new, exotic materials creates
the theoretical possibility of developing sensory experiences that have never before existed. In other words: to extend the set
of potential perceptions in life into new areas. The artistic goal of this project is to create such a new experience. Practical
usability of the constructed new materials is of less importance — artists are not needed to achieve that.
The plan currently under development in collaboration with the scientists of the Nanolab will see the combination of two distinct
properties of molecules: scent and magnetism. A magnetic fragrance could in various ways potentially lead to new experiences.
We generally experience odours slowly — slower than vision, sound or tactility. Moreover, fragrances, if not distributed over a
large space, are usually linked to visible objects. If smells could be linked to magnetic properties, they could then be manipulated
in an environment by electromagnets. Theoretically, it should be possible to position fragrances precisely in an empty space. Or
to turn them ‘on’ and ‘off’ at relatively fast speeds (by ‘positioning’ them with magnets, and ‘removing’ them again). Reaching
this goal will involve more research than has already been undertaken in the Nanolab, in order to discover in the first instance,
if the project is realisable. And to discover the possible health effects and side effects of exposure to these new materials.
Irrespective, it is exciting to see how far this research can be progressed and to discover the unexpected results along the way.
Additionally, WLFR aims to challenge other nano scientists to think about new material possibilities that may lack direct practical
applications, but may result in new experiences. On this scale, an entire world of open opportunity awaits.
nieuwe kunst of nieuwe wetenschap.
Art and science are different, but it is not a categorical difference, like science only producing solid facts, while art only produ-
ces inspired products that are unique. Accepted facts can be undermined by new research. Scientists sometimes emphasize the
fallibility of their research results as what makes science great – a never ending quest. For art, what about a drawing or a painting
where a line or a colour is exactly right, and should not be changed? Or a note in a piece of music? Thus, there is reason to
see art as being solid. There are degrees of solidity in art, of course, but similarly, hardness in science comes in degrees as well.
There is also aesthetics in science, as when a proof (as in mathematics) or a
theory (as in physics) is called beautiful or elegant, and its beauty is one reason
why it is convincing. As Lucien Hanssen argues in his chapter, art has features of
inquiry, so that actual results can be considered as findings which show and tell
us something of the world and how we live in it.
Science and art are different, but not because they are opposites. Their practices
have become different, and by now, these practices get entangled again.
This is definitely visible in and around nanotechnology. In particular in the variety
of visualizations which range from aesthetically pleasing scientific images of
the nanoscale, to artist’s impressions of this nanoworld, to visualizations which
play with, or build on nanoscale phenomena.
(Photo made by Physics Department,
Turin Polytechnic University)
An example of building on these possibilities is Actual Size, a map of Africa at the nanoscale, etched on silicon by using Atomic
Force Microscopy to oxidize silicon atoms, and visible only through Atomic Force Microscopy. Thus, it is “a work of art you never
can see actually”, as Alessandro Scali and Robin Goode phrased it. They conceived the image to emphasize the neglect of
the African continent. In this work of art (‘art’ ?) it is the combination of message and means that is the artistic achievement.
Entanglement creates openings in both directions, not necessarily new art or new science in their own right. In the case of
nanotechnology, the net effect is an emerging field of work and presentations (up to exhibitions and galleries) in which artistic
and technological craftsmanship and scientific and conceptual thinking are entangled. One strand is what one might call nanolandscapes:
natural or engineered structures of matter at the nanoscale are depicted, and these images are appreciated for their
aesthetic impact. Another strand is nanosculptures, like the invisible continent of Africa, created through the manipulation of
matter at the nanoscale by nanoscientists.
While this is being playful, the methods which are used to create nanosculptures are of interest within the scientific field, and
the visualizations become showcases of scientific and technological advancements. Scientists at IBM Almaden have a record
of being playful in this way – and call themselves ‘artists’. Images of such landscapes and sculptures do not remain confined in
laboratories: they are presented in exhibitions and website galleries, and reproduced widely.
is.
Hun kunst is nano-kunst.
Graphic designers and other artists are commissioned to give their impressions of how the nanoscale might look like, and cre-
ate appealing images. Scientists turn to graphic designers to create an image to be put on the cover of a scientific journal like
Science when it carries their article – and then put the image on their website to create visibility for their work.
Some scientists like Chris Ewels turn into graphic designers themselves, playing with variations of molecular models. In his picture
below, it is the model of a Buckminsterfullerene or ‘bucky ball’, which has the earth inside. There is a message here, even
if it is not as explicit as with the invisible African continent. And the means are now those of the graphic designer rather than
those of the nanotechnologist. Artists can take the lead. Actually, there is now an International Festival for NanoArt, organized
by NanoArt21, which aims to reflect the “transition from science to art using technology and could be for the 21st Century what
photography was for the 20th Century”. The contributions of the artists in this issue of Qua Art | Qua Science fall in the same
category. All four articulate the relation between humans and phenomena at the nanoscale, but not in the educational mode that
scientists and journalists tend to fall back on. They experiment with softly unsettling ways to do so.
The artists are not commissioned or otherwise steered by nanoscientists, or by other actors in the nanoworld. They still depend
on the nanoworld because they decided to link up with what is happening there. Their art is nano-art. What does such voluntary
entanglement imply for their art? And more important for this essay, what does it imply for the entanglement of science and art?
An earlier entanglement, between art and the Church in the Renaissance, when
art was emancipating itself, is often interpreted as artists taking up the biblical
(and also classical Roman and Greek) themes that were required in order to
develop their own art. With nano-art, there is no such requirement. The artists
are fascinated by the new means and the new images that are produced, and
explore their possibilities. They can also be fascinated by the promises and
visions, and play with them, creating their own messages. From the side of
science, there has always been an aesthetic element in its practices, and in
the images it produced. What one now sees in and around nanotechnology is
a blurring of boundaries. The term ‘artist’s impression’ is a case in point: the
reference to art allows some freedom in the visualization, but the visualization
Dreams of Buckminster Fuller
still has to be acceptable as a representation of the nanoscale. While rules
may emerge about what is acceptable, these will evolve as ‘art’ makes further inroads into ‘(nano) science’. The differences
between science and art will become less pronounced.
is not Green’.
is: next nature.
an interview with koert van mensvoort
Koert van Mensvoort investigates “the strange and the beautiful” and presents himself as artist, scientist and philosopher. He
is famous for the documentaries ‘Pappa, Het Bos ruikt naar Shampoo’ (Dad the woods smell like shampoo), the ‘Fake for Real
Memory Game’ and the essay ‘Real Nature is not Green’. Van Mensvoort’s discovery of ‘Next Nature’ forms the basis of many of
his projects, investigations into the idea that our technological world has become so complex and uncontrollable that it should
be considered as the natural state. On the other hand much of the green in our world is so over managed that it really ought to
be classified under (agri) culture. At the moment he is working on a Nano Supermarket which is the subject of this interview.
Koert, what are you working on at the moment?
….on being amazed and exploration. It is like the adventurers in the past who sailed the uncharted oceans and scaled high
mountains or allowed themselves to be catapulted into space to explore new territories. Just like them not knowing where my
explorations will lead me but unlike my predecessors my voyages are of a more conceptual nature. They serve the pragmatic
purpose of charting our position as humans in the presence of our natural and technological world. My field of interest is still full
of terra incognita, misty areas and swamps of contradictions that I am trying to wade through. I don’t always use one specific
medium or discipline but choose the medium I think most suited to a certain idea or project. My output varies from paintings to
fountains, from atomic dance films to scientific articles and events.
It sounds as if you are a ‘Jack of all trades’ but isn’t your approach a bit arbitrary?
Because I move easily between media and professions my work may appear arbitrary to the superficial spectator, but I can
assure you my subject matter is highly consistent, absolutely bound to the idea that man with his technology and attempts to
control nature is causing another nature that is still wild and unpredictable: next nature. As an artist, scientist and philosopher
I am trying to develop a language to draw attention to this situation and will use any means to achieve this.
Next Nature? What is that all about?
Our changing relationship with nature is one of the epic stories of our times. Technology is traditionally seen as opposing nature
but more and more we see them coming together or even changing places. We live in a time in which things that are ‘made’ and
things that are ‘born’ have become completely confused. Things that are born – like plants, animals, the climate – are traditionally
classified as nature while things that are made – telephones, cars, the financial system – are seen as culture. In the
meantime we live in a world of rainbow tulips, over cultivated hot-house tomatoes, printed meat, computer viruses and a steadily
growing traffic problem. Traditional notions of nature and culture are no longer applicable. The most important insight into next
nature is that it should not be viewed as something static but as dynamic. Nature changes along with us.
What role does technology play in this?
A double role, traditionally we use technology to overcome and utilize the powers of nature. Only recently have we come to
The phenemenon of scale - The art of Nanotechnology ❘ 53
K o e r t v a n M e n s v o o r t
K o e r t v a n M e n s v o o r t
realize that technology itself is causing a next nature that can be just as wild, cruel and unpredictable as in primeval times.
Looking back on human history it is fascinating to see how, again and again, technology has transformed our relationship with
our natural environment. From the stone-age axe, discovery of fire, agriculture, bronze age, industrialization, digitalization to
today’s bio, info and nanotechnology. Twenty years ago nobody had a cell phone and now if you forget your cell phone you feel
like you have lost a limb. This is just one example of how quickly new technology becomes second nature and in the long term
even first nature. This process has not yet been completed in the example of the cell phone but if we look back much farther into
the past, say 10,000 years, we see many more developed examples.
Such as?
The introduction of agriculture is a prime example. Around 10,000 years ago the idea
of cultivating crops and domesticating animals was a radical new technology which led
to a more efficient production of food and so to distribution of labour, villages, mayors,
kings, in short a totally different lifestyle for the then dominant hunter-gatherers. It
is doubtful whether the first farmers had any idea of the consequences of their newly
acquired technology, we just don’t know. Although there are still researchers who claim
that since the beginning of the agricultural age the human condition has deteriorated
because we now have a weaker skeleton and are more susceptible to infectious diseases
it is difficult to contemplate giving up agriculture and reverting to being hunter-gatherers.
An interesting aspect of this is the fact that what first was seen as technology
after a while becomes normal and natural. I mean this quite literally. Take the banana
as an example. Most people see the banana as something natural. They grow on trees
don’t they? We forget that the banana was first cultivated by prehistoric farmers ten thousand years ago. A wild banana is full
of seeds and quite inedible. The modern banana that we know cannot even procreate without our help. Did you know that all
bananas are clones? The banana is the next nature of ten thousand years ago.
If a banana is the next nature of 10,000 years ago what is today’s next nature?
It won’t surprise you when I say that nanotechnology will be the next nature of our time. Although nanotechnology is a general
term covering very many areas of technology and can’t be considered without information and biotechnology, it is generally
agreed the ability to manipulate material at the level of one billionth of a meter is an important achievement of our time. Experts
expect that nanotechnology well have a great influence on how we live; comparable to historical technological developments
like digitalization, the industrial revolution, electricity, the printing press, the introduction of the written word or the emergence
of agriculture. Nanotechnology has a radical impact on our idea of what is natural. It can make people’s dreams of themselves
come true but can also lead to scenarios that we perhaps might regret. So it is vitally important that we plan our nano future
with the utmost care.
You are working on a NANO supermarket at the moment aren’t you?
While this flood of nanotechnology is engulfing our society most people actually know very little about the impact of this new
ik vrij letterlijk. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een banaan. De meeste mensen zien bananen als natuurlijk. Ze groeien immers aan een
boom.
belangrijke verworvenheid van onze tijd is. Experts verwachten dat nanotechnologie van grote invloed zal zijn op hoe we leven;
In kranten, tijdschriften, wetenschapscafés, televisie, theater.
onwennig of zelfs beangstigend.
human achievement. It is time for a public debate on nanotechnology and this is now taking place in newspapers, magazines,
bars, on television and in the theatre. While most debates are focused on the fascination surrounding the ability to make things
on an incredibly small scale or on the safety of nano particles the NANO supermarket is trying to demonstrate the transforming
character nanotechnology will have on people and society.
The NANO supermarket is a mobile shop stocked with nano products that can come on the market at any time in the next ten
years. Interactive paint, medicinal bonbons, a wine whose taste can be altered in the micro-wave at home, a support stocking
that pulls itself on, paper made from your own skin cells or an invisible security spray. It is actually an exhibition disguised as
a supermarket. The products we display are innovative, useful and marvellous but occasionally strange, disorienting and even
frightening.
Why did it have to be a supermarket and not just an exhibition?
We chose a supermarket as podium in preference to a traditional exhibition
because a supermarket is both an everyday and technological
place. Perhaps it is because we spend so much time there that we find
it normal or even boring but in fact it is an extremely futuristic phenomenon.
Imagine taking someone from the Middle Ages and dropping
them in a supermarket they would understand little or nothing of the
products on the shelves. Cola bottles? Body lotion? Energy bars? Milk in
a carton? Light products with added vitamins? Powder soup? Pregnancy
test? The supermarket is a kind of reality machine where new habits,
life styles, and Technologies become everyday things. So it is the perfect
location to explore and define our nano future.
Are your products ‘real’ ?
The products you can find on our shelves are still largely speculative. They were entered by young designers and technologists
from six different countries in reaction to our appeal for ideas for nano products. A commission of prominent nanotechnology
professors, designers, artists, philosophers and technical experts has judged the entries. The selection was made on the basis
of originality, design quality, technological feasibility, social implications and the degree in which the product incites discussion.
Only the most exclusive and exciting products are displayed in the NANO supermarket. Don´t expect a complete range, but a
compact collection of personal product ideas. We were very strict when judging the technological basis of our products. There
are enough tall stories circulating about nanotechnology. The products you will find on our shelves have all been issued with a
feasibility hallmark. This gives an estimate of the year in which it will be technically possible to produce the product and which
nanotechnologies will be used in the product.
As part of the ‘Art of Nano’ project you collaborated with Professor René Jansen.
What effect did this have on the NANO Supermarket?
The NANO Supermarket project had already started before became involved in ‘Art of Nano’. In many respects building a Nano
supermarket is an old fashioned ´ joint effort´ work of art. I took the initiative in cooperation with Dr Marco Rozendaal of the
TU/Enschede Faculty of Industrial Design, after which we sought for collaboration with people from various disciplines, like
of the Nano Supermarket project.
Do you think that the Nano Supermarket products will ever really be on the market?
Even though we are only looking a few years ahead and our products are based on technologies being developed as we speak
our Nano Supermarket is really like a crystal ball as far as predicting the future is concerned. I don’t know whether the the bioelectric
plant that you can use to charge your cell Phone with will ever be in the shops. Will we still have cell phones then or well
we all have a Twitter implant? Is the nanolift really the botox of the future? Are we going to mix medicine and food? We can’t
say whether our products on our shelves will ever really be realized. We must see them as exploratory scenarios for a possible,
not inevitable, future. The products in the Nano supermarket were not made specifically to predict the future but to give us
something to get to grips with now to help us determine which nano future we really want.
