Kultivarproewe soos dié is belangrik om:
• Die opbrengs van verskillende kultivars te bepaal;
• Kultivars vir ’n spesifieke gebied te bepaal;
• Nuwe kultivars te toets;
• Onafhanklike proewe vir produsente te bied;
• Produsente te help om ingeligte besluite te neem.
Dit is baie belangrik om die regte kultivar te kies, aan gesien
saad ’n groot deel van die insetkoste vorm. Kulti vars
is ook baie ge biedsgebonde, wat die aan planting van verskillende
kultivars in ver skillende gebiede ’n moet maak.
Omdat soveel kultivars beskikbaar is, is dit een van die
moei likste besluite om te neem. OVK wil pro du sente van
hulp wees om die regte besluit te neem.
Die saadverskaffers wat aan die proewe deelgeneem
en saad geskenk het, is Agricol, Monsanto, PANNAR,
Klein karoo, Pioneer en Link Seed. In die volgende uitgawe
van OVK Nuus sal inligting van die opbrengs van die
verskillende kultivars verskyn.
A LOOK AT SA’S MOHAIR TOWN
In the largest mohair producing district in the Eas-t ern
Cape and South Africa lies Willowmore, one of the beautiful
Eastern Cape towns in OVK’s region. OVK News
reports on this town on the N9 which most peo ple only
know as a drive through spot en route to the coast.

Willowmore began on the farm The Wil lows as a trading
centre in 1864 and was first named Willow-Moore. William
Joseph Moore’s father, William junior, was born in
Bucking hamshire (UK) and married Ann Dove in 1792.
In 1819 they emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope as
members of the British Settler program.
They came with their two adult chil dren William junior
and Eleanor, both born in the UK.
William junior’s first wife, Marga ret Williamson, whom
he married in 1817 in London, died soon after arrival.
He then married a local girl, Petronella Catharina Terblanche.
They had a daughter, also Petronella Catharina,
who in 1846 married Frederick Daniel Christian Lehmkuhl.
The town of Willow-Moore (Willowmore) was founded
in 1864 when Frederick and William Joseph Moore, his
bro ther-in-law and business partner, donated land to the
Dutch Reformed Church.
In 1874 a magistracy was established and it became a
municipality in 1884. In 2000 Willowmore became part of
the Baviaans municipality which incorporates the towns
of Willowmore and Steytlerville as well as the Ba viaanskloof
Wilderness Area. The administrative centre of the
Baviaans municipality is in Willow more.
