symphonieën der
nederlanden
Hans van Manen maakte Symphonieën der
Nederlanden in 1987 voor de openingsmanifestatie
van Amsterdam Culturele
Hoofdstad van Europa. Het leek hem daarom
goed muziek van een Nederlandse componist
te gebruiken. ‘Zo kwam ik uit bij
Andriessen. De titel alleen al was natuurlijk
prima, en ik was meteen helemaal gék op
die muziek. Lekker jazzy en swingend, stuwend
en opwindend.’
Andriessen schreef zijn compositie voor
twee fanfareorkesten. Daardoor stond de
vorm van de choreografie voor Van Manen
algauw vast – ‘parade-achtige’ beelden van
Amerikaanse marching bands die bij grote
manifestaties of sportwedstrijden optreden
drongen zich onontkoombaar op.
Net als de compositie bestaat de choreografie
uit zeven korte delen, elk met een eigen
karakter. ‘Eigenlijk is de muziek één grote
climax. Er is geen tijd om ergens naar toe te
werken. Je moet meteen de spits op de toren
zetten.’
symphonieën der
nederlanden
Hans van Manen created Symphonieën der
Nederlanden in 1987 for the opening of
the event Amsterdam Cultural Capital of
Europe. So he thought it would be a good
idea to use music by a Dutch composer.
‘That’s why I opted for Andriessen. Just
the title on its own was great, of course,
and I was hooked on the music straight
away. It’s nice and jazzy, and swinging,
compelling and exciting.’
Andriessen wrote his composition for two
brass orchestras. So the form of the choreography
was soon clear to Van Manen.
The music inevitably conjured up ‘paradelike’
images of American marching bands
performing at big displays or sports matches.
Just like the composition, the choreo-
graphy consists of seven short sections,
each with its own character. ‘Actually, the
music is one big climax. There’s no time to
build up to something. You have to get
straight to the point.’
