In 1984 werd in
North Carolina
(VS) een jonge
blanke vrouw
verkracht en
vermoord. Een
‘getuige’, een
voormalig lid
van de Ku Klux
Klan, wees een
19-jarige zwarte
man, Darryl Hunt,
aan als dader. Behalve deze verklaring was er geen
bewijs tegen Hunt. Toch vond de blanke jury dat hij
schuldig was. Hunt werd veroordeeld tot levenslang.
In 1994 bleek uit DNA-tests dat hij onschuldig
was. Toch duurde het nog eens tien jaar voordat
hij vrijgelaten werd. The Trials of Darryl Hunt laat
het verloop van deze bizarre rechtszaak zien aan
de hand van exclusief materiaal en persoonlijke
getuigenissen. De documentaire maakt daarmee
inzichtelijk hoe racisme in Amerika doorwerkt in de
rechtspraak.
