The training consisted <strong>of</strong> theoretical sessions, practical<br />

sessions and excursions. The following topics<br />

were discussed: water quality and standards, aeration,<br />

filtration, lime-carbonate relation, s<strong>of</strong>ten, conditioning,<br />

groundwater wells and threats, membrane filtration,<br />

and oxidation. During the practical sessions (in working<br />

groups), assignments had to be ma<strong>de</strong> about conditioning,<br />

aeration and filtration, and the formulation <strong>of</strong> a master plan<br />

for drinking water supply. Excursions were organized to<br />

the drinking water supply stations Leysweg and Blauwgrond.<br />

Explanations about the processes and problems at<br />

these stations were given by experts <strong>of</strong> the SWM. The last<br />

day, participants had to present their master plan for <strong>Suriname</strong>.<br />

The outputs <strong>of</strong> this training program are, that:<br />

• Participants have gained extra knowledge about new<br />

technologies for drinking water supply systems un<strong>de</strong>r<br />

different conditions (coastal and inland/river systems)<br />

• Participants are able to i<strong>de</strong>ntify practical problems at<br />

stations and suggest measures to be un<strong>de</strong>rtaken<br />

• Participants are able to make basic calculations for<br />

conditioning, aeration and filtration, and<br />

• Participants are able to set up a master plan for drinking<br />

water supply.<br />

Challenges ground water purification<br />

In the period 7-11 February <strong>2011</strong>, the Caribbean Water Association (CWA) and Oasen<br />

Drinking Water, organized a 5 day training program about “Challenges in the<br />

groundwater purification” in <strong>Suriname</strong> in cooperation with the <strong>Suriname</strong> Water Supply<br />

Company (SWM) and the <strong>Anton</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Kom</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Suriname</strong> (A<strong>de</strong>KUS). The course<br />

instructors were: ir. Ruud Kolpa (Oasen) and ir. Weren <strong>de</strong> Vet (Oasen/TUDelft), assisted by<br />

ir. A. Salmin and R. Nurmohamed, Ph.D. About 25 persons from the SWM, the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Natural resources, A<strong>de</strong>KUS and Aqualectra (Curaçao) have participated in this training.<br />

The location was the <strong>Anton</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Kom</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Suriname</strong>, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Technology. The<br />

opening was performed by R. Nurmohamed, Ph.D. (A<strong>de</strong>KUS), ir. A. Salmin (SWM) and<br />

A. Vos <strong>de</strong> Wael (Director Oasen).<br />

Successful participants received a certificate, a original<br />

book <strong>of</strong> “Drinking water: principles and practices”, and<br />

a CD with all the course materials. The closing ceremony<br />

was also atten<strong>de</strong>d by the Director <strong>of</strong> the SWM, Director <strong>of</strong><br />

the Oasen, the Chairman <strong>of</strong> CWA, staff members <strong>of</strong> Aqualectra<br />

(Curaçao) and representatives from the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Infrastructure and Environment <strong>of</strong> the Netherlands. <br />
