Tuesday 07 December 2010 Secretary of the Ministry of Health in Suriname, Mr Edwin Noordzee; Dr. Marthelise Eersel, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health; General Secretary for Health of the ACTO, Dr Antonio Restrepo; Dr Roberto Sena Rocha of the Executive Comity of the Pan–Amazonian Network; Dr. Luis Santamaria, President of the Inter governmental Amazonian Comity for CT&IS; Dr. Gerry Eijkemans, Suriname representative of the PAHO, other distinguished participants, ladies and gentlemen, especially those from abroad. It is a great pleasure and honor that I represent the Association of Amazonian Universities (UNAMAZ) at this most important meeting where you will discuss new strategies with regard to the present role of Health and Environment issues in the perspective of climate change. First of all on behalf of UNAMAZ I want to congratulate ACTO with this initiative and especially for organizing this Seminar in Suriname. As known the UNAMAZ is the Association of Amazonian Universities which was founded in September 1987 in the scope of the Amazonian Cooperation Agreement. About 68 public research institutions and public Universities of Brasil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname ,Peru and Venezuela are at this moment member of the UNAMAZ. The mission of the UNAMAZ is to promote academic cooperation and integration in order to strengthen the public goods, the higher education, the scientific research and the social integration for sustainable human development of the Pan-Amazonian region. Based on this mission the future vision is that in 2020 the UNAMAZ must be recognized as a network of academic and scientific institutions, a world regional and local leader in the integration and articulation for the formation of human resources and research in the member states of the UNAMAZ for sustainable welfare and wellbeing. Given this mission and vision of the UNAMAZ it 10 is clear that the UNAMAZ has great interest in participating in this meeting to see how the Association can further contribute to future health and environmental program of ACTO / PAHO. Concerning the structure of the UNAMAZ: The UNAMAZ is an entity of education and research with power and flexibility to undertake actions and administrative resources . It must not be confused with a foundation. Further the structure of the UNAMAZ is described in the Internal Regulations of the UNAMAZ. Main activities of the UNAMAZ are: The institutional Strengthening of the UNAMAZ to guaranty the functioning of the organization Internationalization of Higher Education For the UNAMAZ as a network of education, the internationalization of Higher Education is a priority issue. It is essentially to strengthen its members through the cooperation within member countries. With regard to the environment and especially the Amazonian Biodiversity, the sustainable use and conservation of renewable natural resources of the Amazonian has special importance for the UNAMAZ. The OTCA and UNAMAZ signed a technical agreement (in the scope of the Biodiversity project OTCA/IDB )for the elaboration of AdeKUS INFOBULLETIN
esearch projects for the conservation and sustainable use of the Amazonian Biodiversity. The UNAMAZ also started a project with the UNESCO, which through its secretary helps with the implementation of the project “ The Management of the reserves of the Amazonian continental Biosphere”. Within the Thematic line of water resources , the UNAMAZ has organized a seminar –workshop in Rurrenabaque, Bolivia in 2007. The OTCA and other governmental organizations of different countries had participated. In order to continue with the activities the UNAMAZ realized finance for the organization and formulation of integrated actions of the Amazonian Bacin. The objective of the project is the formation of human resources at technical level from national organs responsible for actions of water resources in the Amazon. At the moment the project is being analyzed by donors. With regard to the theme of Health of the UNAMAZ the priority is insertion in the Pan-Amazonian network of Science, Technology and Innovation in Health (CT&IS). The proposal of the network is to stimulate and contribute for the implementation of politics and regional integration in the Amazonian for the development and utilization of scientific, technological research, products and innovated processes, with the purpose to promote equity in health and the production of technical capabilities to face problems at global, regional and national level”. Coming to the end of my brief presentation I once more want to emphasize that UNAMAZ as an Association of nearly 70 Higher Institutions fully wants to cooperate and contribute to the success of the Strategic Health Program of ACTO / PAHO. Finally may I wish the working groups and all participants to this Seminar a fruitful discussion in the coming hours. Thank you.
