Drainage van postoperatief pleuravocht na abdominale operaties is slechts
zelden noodzakelijk.
Indicaties voor drainage zijn respiratoire problemen, vermoeden van empyeem
of onzekerheid over de diagnose.

Postoperatief pleuravocht komt frequent voor na hartchirurgie, is meestal linkszijdig en wordt
in de meeste gevallen veroorzaakt door de procedure zelf. Daarnaast zijn decompensatio cordis,
longembolie, pneumonie of iatrogeen door complicaties van een centraal veneuze lijn mogelijke
oorzaken. 1-5
Vroeg ontstaan postoperatief pleuravocht (# 30 dagen) wordt afhankelijk van de toegepaste
diagnostiek bij 40-89% van de patiënten aangetoond en neemt meestal niet meer dan twee
intercostaalruimtes in. 4-6 Hoewel tegenstrijdige resultaten zijn gepubliceerd, lijkt de frequentie
van pleurale effusies hoger te zijn na arteria mammaria interna bypass-grafting (70-85%) dan
