Introduction : <strong>Suriname</strong> inherited its civil law legal system from the Dutch and is<br />
currently a member <strong>of</strong> the CARICOM and <strong>of</strong> the CARICOM Single<br />
Market and Economy (CSME); a regional economic integration unity<br />
that is primarily composed <strong>of</strong> former colonies <strong>of</strong> Great Britain.<br />
All these former British colonies have a common law legal system,<br />
which differs from the legal system as this is in operation in <strong>Suriname</strong>.<br />
With reference<br />
- to the globalization<br />
- the necessity <strong>of</strong> States, particularly small Caribbean States, to join<br />
together to compete in several sectors <strong>of</strong> the changing world, or to be<br />
able to survive the impact <strong>of</strong> both global financial and economic<br />
changes, these States must modify their approach to <strong>de</strong>al effectively with<br />
these important issues.<br />
Un<strong>de</strong>r the Treaty <strong>of</strong> Chaguaramas, establishing the CARICOM and the CSME,<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals/university graduates are free to move among member states <strong>of</strong> the<br />
CARICOM.<br />
With this in mind, it is therefore necessary to provi<strong>de</strong> the contemporary law stu<strong>de</strong>nt at <strong>de</strong><br />
<strong>Anton</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Kom</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Suriname</strong> with information <strong>of</strong> the common law legal system<br />
as this is in operation in not only the CARICOM sister States, but also in England (the<br />
