Of het nu sacraal of profaan is, voorbode van de aanval, blijdschap of verdriet, een herinnering nalaat aan het heden of de voortzetting is van het verleden, een toekomst oproept of bezweert, in al zijn vormen dringt het feest de dood terug. En zoals apenstammen allemaal op dezelfde manier reageren op naderend gevaar, zo toont de mensenstam verenigd en dus versterkt, zijn extra kracht met een collectief ritme, dat zelf voor nog meer versterking zorgt. In eenzelfde ritme, altijd hetzelfde, slaat iedereen op trommel Aarde, is iedereen danser, en woord en gezang. Maar herhaling leidt tot eenvormigheid, eenvormigheid tot eentonigheid. Ziehier nu een van die mensen die het gevaar voorvoelt. In zijn ritme is er iets dat hem stimuleert; in zijn ritme zelf stimuleert hem de grote tarting van de wet van een wereld die sterft, hij inspireert hem om het feest weer op gang te brengen door de prikkel van de verrassing…” Femand Schirren, ‘Le rythme primordial et souverain’, coll. 'La Pensée du Mouvement', uitgegeven Contredanse. Een wreed en uitbundig feest voor een gedwongen huwelijk. Een bedroefde jongeman en jongevrouw worden er geofferd aan het gemeenschapsbelang. Rumoerige vrolijkheid om het verdriet van het bruidspaar monddood te maken. Huwelijksgezang, ondergang. ‘Les Noces’ van Stravinsky werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in Parijs in 1923 door Les Ballets Russes van Serge Diaghilev, en sindsdien vaak gedanst, vaak gevierd. In ballingschap denkt Stravinsky terug aan de volksliederen van zijn Russische geboorteland en aan de tomeloze roes van de boerenbruiloften. Hij droomt er een pianolabegeleiding bij om de schijnheiligheid te onderstrepen. In ballingschap bedenkt Bronisla Nijinska de choreografie, geïnspireerd op uitgesponnen, gestileerde iconen en archaïsche mozaïeken. Net zoals Kandinski (‘On the spiritual in Art’) voorvoelt ze dat hoe abstracter en gezuiverder deze dansvormen zijn, des te meer ze de expressieve kracht van het primitieve ademen. April 2002. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker voert deze ‘Noces’ op, haar eerste balletmuziek. Het is de hoeksteen van haar nieuwe creatie, die ze ‘(but if a look should) April me’ noemt, met een verwijzing naar een gedicht van E.E. Cummings. ‘April’ bevat ook echo's uit ‘The Waste Land’ van T.S. Eliot. (…) Met Thierry De Mey, componist en cineast, smeedt de choreografe rond ‘Noces’ etnische muziek om zo ragfijne vertakkingen te weven. Deze etnische muziek stamt uit tijden toen het dagelijkse leven nog werd bepaald door het ritme van de melopeeën die de ouderen overleverden. Ze ruikt naar de schoonheid in de uithoeken van de wereld: het veelstemmige gezang van vrouwen in de rijstvelden van de Po-vlakte, over de geliefde die ten oorlog trekt (‘Sento il fischio del vapore’), de jammerklacht uit Rajastan, waar men 's nachts de afwezige liefde beweent, of misschien wel de God die op dit verdriet niet reageert (‘Rosiya’), tot het afsluitende, eenzame en dromerige aftelrijmpje uit Zuid- India, waar een kind zich melodisch amuseert door met veel plezier de sterren te bekijken (‘Chukke Hakki’). Naast die emotionele, volkse reminiscenties wordt de ruimte gevuld met percussiestukken: 'de trommel van de aarde', ongebreidelde pulsaties, de dwingende metronoom, kosmische uitstraling... Maar ook met stilten, geciseleerd met gedempte drukte.
