From the Senwes Spinners tournament a number
of initiatives have followed. a Senwes Spinners
high Performance Squad was chosen last year
to participate in a 20 overs a side tournament in
klerksdorp. the team was chosen from teams that
played in the Senwes Spinners tournament. unfortunately,
the tournament was cancelled due to rain.
Four cricketers from the Senwes Spinners project
were chosen for the u/15 nW Development
team in 2009. north West cricket also identified
eight schools from the province to participate in a
development league. at the end of the league the
best development players were chosen to represent
north West at a cricket tournament in Benoni. kgosi
Senne was included in the squad after his performances
in the league.
During December 2009, five of the Senwes
development players were invited to attend the International
cricket School camp, which took place
in Potchefstroom.
the milner project saw Senwes and north West
cricket working with milner high School in klerksdorp.
the project was launched in 2009 and two
players from the Senwes Spinners project were selected
to attend milner high School. this year, one
player was selected. Senwes picks up the bill for
the kids’ school and boarding fees and they will also
continue to support the development of their cricket
careers. S
Ismail Minty’s take
on the Spinners
Senwes Scenario spoke to Ismail minty, the general
manager of Rural Development at north West
cricket, about the Senwes Spinners project at the
final between humansvlakte and Rabana.
what has been the most inspiring aspect
of the project?
the children who form part of the project knew
nothing about cricket when they started. the
progress they have made and the difference that
cricket has made in these children’s lives, is
inspirational.
what has been the highlight for you?
a few of the children have been selected for provincial
squads. they inspire the ones who form
part of the project now.
what does the future hold for the project?
every three years we look at the schools that
compete in the project and try to change the mix
or add new teams. at the end of next year we will
once again go through this exercise.
How do the coaches benefit?
the coaches have done well in the various
courses that they have attended. During 2009,
some of the coaches were invited to attend an
Icc coaches’ conference, where they received
an enormous amount of cricket information from
top coaches and players, such as corrie van Zyl,
andrew hall, gordon Parsons and Jacques Faul.
they also visited the high Performance center,
run by the north West university, to learn more
about the human body and how to structure a
training programme for players, how to effectively
condition players for a season of cricket and also
about the rehabilitation of injured athletes. S
