As at August 2004, a total of 3 457
662 hectares has been delivered
through the various land reform pro-
42 Senwester, Julie 2005
update
The Minister of Agriculture made revised figures of the land delivery process available
on 18 October 2004. Of the almost 3,5 million hectares, some 354 421 ha is in the four
provinces served by Senwes namely Free State, North West, Gauteng and Northern
Cape. Mariana Purnell from Agricultural Services discusses the most recent figures.
grammes (Figure 1). This is equivalent
to 4,2% of the total commercial
agricultural land in 1994. The official
Figure 1: Only 4,2% of commercial agricultural land has been delivered since
1994. This includes non-agricultural land, state land and land already under black
occupation to which tenure has been secured.
target for redistribution is 30% of agricultural
land by 2015.
Land delivered, however, includes
non-agricultural land (e.g. protected
areas) and land already under black
occupation to which tenure has now
been secured. According to the quarterly
bulletin tracking land reform in
South Africa, Umhlaba Wethu, it also
includes the close to 800 000 ha of
state land that was not previously
included in some reports.
Progress with
redistribution
Between 1994 and September 2004,
some 1 877 754 ha has been redistributed.
This is an increase of 194
480 ha on the figure reported in the
November issue of Senwester.
Number of projects
