Die doel van <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> verkennende, kwalitatiewe ondersoek was <strong>om</strong> vas <strong>te</strong> s<strong>te</strong>l hoe ges<strong>in</strong>ne<br />

deur <strong>die</strong> krisis van <strong>af</strong>knouery geraak word. Ges<strong>in</strong>sis<strong>te</strong>em<strong>te</strong>orie (Broderick 1993) versk<strong>af</strong> <strong>die</strong><br />

<strong>te</strong>oretiese raamwerk vir <strong>die</strong> ondersoek. Die navors<strong>in</strong>gsvraag vloei logies voort uit<br />

ges<strong>in</strong>sis<strong>te</strong>em<strong>te</strong>orie, naamlik: Hoe raak <strong>die</strong> <strong>af</strong>knouery van ’n k<strong>in</strong>d ook <strong>die</strong> ander ges<strong>in</strong>slede?<br />

Die stu<strong>die</strong>populasie was ges<strong>in</strong>ne met laerskoolk<strong>in</strong>ders wat vir ses maande of langer geboelie<br />

is <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> voor<strong>af</strong>gaande drie jaar, en wat <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> Suid-Kaap woon. Agt-en-veertig ma’s het as<br />

ver<strong>te</strong>enwoordigers van hul ges<strong>in</strong>ne aan <strong>die</strong> ondersoek deelgeneem. Elk het ’n biogr<strong>af</strong>iese<br />

vraelys voltooi en <strong>die</strong> volgende oop vraag beantwoord: Op wat<strong>te</strong>r manier het <strong>die</strong> <strong>af</strong>knouery<br />

julle ges<strong>in</strong> ge<strong>af</strong>fek<strong>te</strong>er? Resulta<strong>te</strong> wat deur middel van <strong>in</strong>houdsontled<strong>in</strong>g verkry is, het getoon<br />

dat ges<strong>in</strong>ne op verskeie maniere deur <strong>die</strong> <strong>af</strong>knouery geraak is. Die k<strong>in</strong>ders wat geboelie is, is<br />

veral ge<strong>af</strong>fek<strong>te</strong>er deurdat hulle negatiewe emosies soos hartseer ervaar het, opstandig geword<br />

het by <strong>die</strong> huis, hulself onttrek het en/of nie wou <strong>te</strong>ruggaan skool toe nie. Die mees<strong>te</strong> ouers is<br />

deur <strong>die</strong> <strong>af</strong>knouery ge<strong>af</strong>fek<strong>te</strong>er deurdat hulle woede of ander negatiewe emosies ervaar het,<br />

en/of deurdat hulle bek<strong>om</strong>merd oor hul k<strong>in</strong>d se welstand en toek<strong>om</strong>s geword het. Die<br />

<strong>af</strong>knouery het s<strong>om</strong>s ges<strong>in</strong>ne as geheel beïnvloed deurdat dit konflik b<strong>in</strong>ne <strong>die</strong> ges<strong>in</strong><br />

veroorsaak het, <strong>te</strong>rwyl dit <strong>in</strong> ander gevalle <strong>die</strong> ges<strong>in</strong> nader aan mekaar gebr<strong>in</strong>g het. Die<br />

bev<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>ge van <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> ondersoek vul ’n leem<strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> li<strong>te</strong>ratuur oor <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> onderwerp en kan<br />

s<strong>in</strong>vol aangewend word <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> ontwikkel<strong>in</strong>g van <strong>af</strong>knoueryvoork<strong>om</strong><strong>in</strong>gs- en<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rvensieprogramme.<br />

Abstract<br />

Mothers’ perceptions of how bully<strong>in</strong>g <strong>af</strong>fects families<br />

Large-scale stu<strong>die</strong>s on the prevalence of bully<strong>in</strong>g have been conduc<strong>te</strong>d <strong>in</strong> various countries,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Norway, F<strong>in</strong>land, Sweden, England, the Netherlands, Canada, Spa<strong>in</strong>, Ireland,<br />

Australia, Japan and the Uni<strong>te</strong>d Sta<strong>te</strong>s of America (Espelage and Swearer 2003:365; Olweus<br />

1994:1171). A study that was conduc<strong>te</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Norway, <strong>in</strong> which more than 130 000 learners<br />

between the ages of seven and six<strong>te</strong>en c<strong>om</strong>ple<strong>te</strong>d the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire,<br />

found that approxima<strong>te</strong>ly 15% of all learners <strong>in</strong> the country had been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> bully<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

whether as bullies or as victims. With regard to other countries, the prevalence of bully<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ranges fr<strong>om</strong> 11,3% <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land to 49,8% <strong>in</strong> Ireland (Dake, Price and Telljohann 2003:173).<br />
