con<strong>te</strong>mporary problems and issues, thus result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a version of nature poetry<br />

generally marked by three primary charac<strong>te</strong>ristics. (Bryson 2002:5)<br />

Bryson (2002:5–6) identifiseer dan <strong>die</strong> drie kenmerke as (1) <strong>die</strong> erkenn<strong>in</strong>g van <strong>die</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>r<strong>af</strong>hanklike aard van <strong>die</strong> wêreld, (2) <strong>die</strong> nederigheid <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> verhoud<strong>in</strong>g met beide <strong>die</strong><br />

menslike en <strong>die</strong> niemenslike wêreld en (3) ’n <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>nse skeptisisme met betrekk<strong>in</strong>g tot<br />

hiperwerklikheid en oordrewe <strong>te</strong>gnologie.<br />

Bryson se def<strong>in</strong>isie word la<strong>te</strong>r uitgebrei <strong>om</strong> <strong>die</strong> <strong>te</strong>rm poiesis <strong>in</strong> <strong>te</strong> sluit. Laasgenoemde <strong>te</strong>rm,<br />

<strong>af</strong>k<strong>om</strong>stig van <strong>die</strong> Griekse woord ποιέω, wat be<strong>te</strong>ken “<strong>om</strong> <strong>te</strong> maak”, vorm <strong>die</strong> wor<strong>te</strong>l van <strong>die</strong><br />

moderne woord poësie, wat aanvanklik ’n werkwoord was, ’n aksie wat <strong>die</strong> wêreld<br />

transformeer en laat voortgaan.<br />

Ekopoësie word soos volg deur Jonathan Sk<strong>in</strong>ner, stig<strong>te</strong>r van <strong>die</strong> tydskrif ecopoetics,<br />

gedef<strong>in</strong>ieer:<br />

“Eco” here signals – no more, no less – the house we share with several million other<br />

species, our planet Earth. “Poetics” is used as poesis or mak<strong>in</strong>g, not necessarily to<br />

emphasize the critical over the creative act (nor vice versa). Thus: ecopoetics, a house<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g. (Sk<strong>in</strong>ner 2001:5)<br />

In sy artikel “The language habitat: An ecopoetry manifesto” beskryf Engelhardt (s.j., par. 2)<br />

dit só: “Ecopoetry is connection. It’s a way to engage the world by and through language.”<br />

Sk<strong>in</strong>ner se tydskrif, ecopoetics, wat sy ontstaan <strong>in</strong> 2001 gehad het, baan <strong>die</strong> weg vir<br />

eksperimen<strong>te</strong>le poësie, maar dit is veral Christopher Arigo wat Sk<strong>in</strong>ner se <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rpretasie van<br />

ekopoësie verder ontwikkel. Arigo (s.j.:1) wys daarop dat Sk<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> voorwoord tot elke<br />

uitgawe van ecopoetics aandui dat <strong>die</strong> tydskrif gewy word aan “explor<strong>in</strong>g creative-critical<br />

edges between writ<strong>in</strong>g (with an emphasis on poetry) and ecology (the theory and praxis of<br />

delibera<strong>te</strong> earthl<strong>in</strong>gs)”. Met <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> s<strong>te</strong>ll<strong>in</strong>g as vertrekpunt pas Arigo (s.j.:2) <strong>die</strong> <strong>te</strong>rm ekotoon<br />

(ecotone) op <strong>die</strong> let<strong>te</strong>rkunde toe deurdat hy sê dat ekopoësie ’n ekotoon tussen dissipl<strong>in</strong>es is –<br />

tussen ekologie, poësie en etnopoëtika.<br />

Ekotoon is ’n biologiese <strong>te</strong>rm wat gebruik word <strong>om</strong> <strong>die</strong> area tussen twee aangrensende<br />

ekosis<strong>te</strong>me/bi<strong>om</strong>e <strong>te</strong> beskryf, ’n area wat dikwels ’n grenseffek (“edge effect”) tot gevolg het,<br />

wat <strong>die</strong> werklike grens tussen twee habitats aandui. Die tweede deel van <strong>die</strong> woord is <strong>af</strong>gelei<br />

van <strong>die</strong> Griekse woord tonos, wat “spann<strong>in</strong>g” be<strong>te</strong>ken en wil ’n aanduid<strong>in</strong>g wees van <strong>die</strong><br />

spann<strong>in</strong>g tussen twee ekologiese sis<strong>te</strong>me. Daar word dus van <strong>die</strong> veronders<strong>te</strong>ll<strong>in</strong>g uitgegaan<br />

dat ekopoësie dikwels <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rdissipl<strong>in</strong>êr en op <strong>die</strong> grens van talle dissipl<strong>in</strong>es optree en <strong>in</strong><br />

spann<strong>in</strong>g is met <strong>die</strong> talle dissipl<strong>in</strong>es wat dit <strong>om</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g. Arigo (s.j.:2) sluit sy betoog vir <strong>die</strong><br />

<strong>te</strong>rm<strong>in</strong>ologie <strong>af</strong> deur <strong>te</strong> sê: “A good ecopoem then is a house made founded on the <strong>te</strong>nsion<br />

between the cutt<strong>in</strong>g edge of <strong>in</strong>novation and ecological th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

Volgens Harriet Tarlo is Arigo se bondige verwys<strong>in</strong>g na etnopoëtika belangrik vir ekopoësie<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> s<strong>in</strong> dat dit <strong>die</strong> aandag vestig op vierdewêreld-gebiede en gebiede wat ekologies en<br />

anders<strong>in</strong>s bedreig word deurdat <strong>die</strong> leser blootges<strong>te</strong>l word aan ’n wyer kulturele spektrum van<br />

poësie vanuit <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> gebiede (Tarlo s.j.:9). Etnopoëtika is ’n <strong>te</strong>rm wat sowat 50 jaar gelede<br />
