As far back as 1611 the metaphysical poet John Donne described the relationship between<br />

man and nature <strong>in</strong> his poem “An anat<strong>om</strong>y of the World”, words that resound <strong>in</strong> the many<br />

current deba<strong>te</strong>s on man’s abuse of the non-human world which surrounds him. Donne claims<br />

that other creatures – a phrase which can be read as referr<strong>in</strong>g to the whole non-human world<br />

– are subjec<strong>te</strong>d to the mercy and <strong>in</strong>strumental use of man. La<strong>te</strong>r <strong>in</strong> the same poem he<br />

describes how the world is broken apart and how connection and <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rconnectivity are lost – a<br />

thought that is currently resonat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> global discussions on ecology.<br />

Lawrence Buell, one of the pioneers of the ecocritical movement, wri<strong>te</strong>s <strong>in</strong> his study The<br />

future of environmental criticism (2005:1–2) that the earliest stories of mank<strong>in</strong>d were those<br />

that dealt with earth and creation and with God and man’s transformative <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rference with it,<br />

which is an <strong>in</strong>dication of the fact that environmental consciousness and criticism as a<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>e has ancient roots.<br />

In this article the focus of <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>cludes two areas, presen<strong>te</strong>d <strong>in</strong> two parts. The first<br />

part, which is the ma<strong>in</strong> focus of the article, presents a theoretical background to the concepts<br />

of ecocriticism and ecopoetics. It serves <strong>in</strong> particular as an at<strong>te</strong>mpt to establish an<br />

enc<strong>om</strong>pass<strong>in</strong>g def<strong>in</strong>ition of ecopoetry.<br />

As a critical theory, ecocriticism does not yet have the same status as, for <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />

postcolonialism or postmodernism, but there is an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g call for the study of place <strong>in</strong> the<br />

same way as class, race and gender. The <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary charac<strong>te</strong>r of ecocriticism makes<br />

precise def<strong>in</strong>ition difficult, and, as Cook (1994:2) c<strong>om</strong>ments, ecocriticism can be seen as<br />

<strong>in</strong>clusive rather than exclusive, without the need to draw boundaries.<br />

An ecological perspective would mean that the whole can be perceived <strong>in</strong> <strong>te</strong>rms of the<br />

connectivity of the parts. Elg<strong>in</strong> (1983:8) describes it as follows:<br />

It means try<strong>in</strong>g to see a whole which is enormous and c<strong>om</strong>plex – and a cosmic view<br />

so threa<strong>te</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of man’s image of himself – that we are <strong>te</strong>mp<strong>te</strong>d to retreat to our<br />

c<strong>om</strong>fortable bro<strong>om</strong> closets of specialized knowledge, to fragments of <strong>in</strong>formation reassur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

precisely because they have simplified our world to a po<strong>in</strong>t at which we can<br />

understand it.<br />

The diversity of the ecocritical field of <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>cludes the follow<strong>in</strong>g questions, among<br />

others: the mean<strong>in</strong>g of the concept nature; the concept wilderness (as chaos) and how<br />

perceptions of it has changed through time; c<strong>om</strong>mentary on land/earth and the way <strong>in</strong> which<br />

we live on it; criticism on who we are, how we have been liv<strong>in</strong>g and how a new way of liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

can be construc<strong>te</strong>d; personal connection and a sense of responsibility on the topic; a new<br />

awareness of, and <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rest <strong>in</strong>, how chang<strong>in</strong>g landscapes are be<strong>in</strong>g explored and represen<strong>te</strong>d by<br />

authors; the difference between landscape and environment; <strong>in</strong>vestigations on landscape as<br />

emotional space, as memory, melodrama and sentiment; how the moral geography of space<br />

and place looks; how environmental li<strong>te</strong>rature and politics are rela<strong>te</strong>d; and the way <strong>in</strong> which<br />

ecopoetry and ecocriticism lead to different stra<strong>te</strong>gies of action other than environmental<br />

policy. Ecocriticism also presents a broaden<strong>in</strong>g perspective on the way <strong>in</strong> which nature and<br />

wilderness are be<strong>in</strong>g looked at as the new Other.<br />

The exploration of the nature and range of the ecocritical movement is, <strong>in</strong> the words of Buell<br />

(2005:1), “an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly he<strong>te</strong>rogeneous movement” and a road “bestrewn by obstacles both<br />

ex<strong>te</strong>rnal and self-imposed”. Thus, one of the excit<strong>in</strong>g developments <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

ecologically engaged writ<strong>in</strong>g is the <strong>in</strong>vestigation of the concept of poetics. Sk<strong>in</strong>ner (2001:7),<br />
