volgens Friedman (2002:219) ’n <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rpretasie van <strong>die</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>raksie tussen <strong>die</strong> horisontale en<br />

vertikale narratiewe koörd<strong>in</strong>a<strong>te</strong>, en betrek <strong>die</strong> skrywer, leser en <strong>te</strong>ks. ’n Horisontale narratief<br />

beskryf Friedman as <strong>die</strong> opeenvolg<strong>in</strong>g van gebeure (hetsy <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rn of eks<strong>te</strong>rn) wat <strong>in</strong><br />

ooreens<strong>te</strong>mm<strong>in</strong>g met <strong>die</strong> ordenende beg<strong>in</strong>sels van <strong>die</strong> plot en narratiewe perspektief<br />

“gebeur”. Ingeslo<strong>te</strong> is <strong>die</strong> ruim<strong>te</strong>, karak<strong>te</strong>rs, handel<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>isiële “probleem”, progressie en<br />

sluit<strong>in</strong>g – met ander woorde <strong>die</strong> fokus van <strong>die</strong> tradisionele narratologie.<br />

Die vertikale as van <strong>die</strong> narratief sluit <strong>in</strong> ’n “<strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong>p<strong>te</strong>”-lees (dus ’n <strong>af</strong>daal na <strong>die</strong><br />

benederuim<strong>te</strong>) van <strong>die</strong> <strong>te</strong>ks en dit geskied gelyktydig met <strong>die</strong> horisontale <strong>te</strong>ks-<strong>in</strong>-progressie.<br />

’n Relasionele lees veronders<strong>te</strong>l ’n <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>raktiewe verwantskap tussen <strong>die</strong> oppervlak en <strong>die</strong><br />

palimpsestiese <strong>die</strong>p<strong>te</strong>s van ’n gegewe <strong>te</strong>ks. Hoewel <strong>te</strong>n nous<strong>te</strong> met mekaar verweef, kan <strong>die</strong><br />

vertikale dimensie <strong>in</strong> drie onderskeidende aspek<strong>te</strong> onderverdeel word <strong>te</strong>r wille van ontled<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

<strong>die</strong> li<strong>te</strong>rêre, historiese en psigiese. 2 Sowel <strong>die</strong> li<strong>te</strong>rêre as <strong>die</strong> historiese aspek<strong>te</strong> van <strong>die</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>gebedde vertikale narratief betrek ’n dialoog met ander <strong>te</strong>ks<strong>te</strong>, wat hetsy bewus<strong>te</strong>lik of<br />

onbewus<strong>te</strong>lik deur <strong>die</strong> skrywer voorsien is. Hier<strong>die</strong> dialoog bestaan as ’n “mosaïek van<br />

aanhal<strong>in</strong>gs en verwys<strong>in</strong>gs” wat deur <strong>die</strong> leser geïn<strong>te</strong>rpre<strong>te</strong>er moet word. Friedman (2002:225)<br />

s<strong>om</strong> <strong>die</strong> voordeel van <strong>die</strong> konseptualiser<strong>in</strong>g van <strong>die</strong> narratief <strong>in</strong> ruim<strong>te</strong>like <strong>te</strong>rme soos volg<br />

op:<br />

In contrast to typological approaches, spatialization emphasizes the psychodynamic,<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>ractive, and situational nature of narrative processes; it also provides a fluid,<br />

relational approach that connects <strong>te</strong>xt and con<strong>te</strong>xt, wri<strong>te</strong>r and reader. [...] But a<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g stra<strong>te</strong>gy based <strong>in</strong> the identification of horizontal and vertical narratives axes<br />

fos<strong>te</strong>rs relational read<strong>in</strong>gs, discourages “def<strong>in</strong>i<strong>te</strong>” and bounded <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rpretations, and<br />

encourages a notion of the <strong>te</strong>xt as a multiplicitous and dynamic si<strong>te</strong> of repression and<br />

return.<br />

In Die benederyk sluit <strong>die</strong> palimpses van <strong>te</strong>ks<strong>te</strong> onder andere <strong>in</strong>: ’n kunshistoriese diskoers,<br />

<strong>die</strong> mi<strong>te</strong> van Orfeus en Euridike, en verskeie Bybelse verwys<strong>in</strong>gs, soos <strong>die</strong> verhale van<br />

Lasarus en van Josef en sy broers. Th<strong>om</strong>as Mann se <strong>te</strong>tralogie Joseph und se<strong>in</strong>e Brüder<br />

(Joseph and his brothers) is ’n opvallende <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>r<strong>te</strong>ks, <strong>te</strong>rwyl verskeie “bewus<strong>te</strong>like <strong>te</strong>ks<strong>te</strong>” aan<br />

<strong>die</strong> e<strong>in</strong>de van <strong>die</strong> r<strong>om</strong>an as “erkenn<strong>in</strong>gs” gelys word. As <strong>te</strong>oretiese stramien by <strong>die</strong> lees van<br />

W<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rbach se r<strong>om</strong>an kan Kaja Silverman se <strong>te</strong>ks Flesh of my flesh (2009), waar<strong>in</strong> sy <strong>in</strong>sig<strong>te</strong><br />

oor relasionali<strong>te</strong>it, kuns<strong>te</strong>naarskap en <strong>die</strong> dood <strong>in</strong>dr<strong>in</strong>gend verken en ui<strong>te</strong>ensit aan <strong>die</strong> hand<br />

van <strong>die</strong> mi<strong>te</strong> van Orfeus en Euridike (’n mi<strong>te</strong> wat bes<strong>te</strong>mpel kan word as ’n oernarratief van<br />

Wes<strong>te</strong>rse subjektiwi<strong>te</strong>it), betrek word.<br />

2. Katabasis, relasionali<strong>te</strong>it en Nachträglichkeit: ’n <strong>te</strong>oretiese bes<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Orfeus se neerdaal na <strong>die</strong> benederyk hou verband met <strong>die</strong> Griekse begrip katabasis, wat<br />

volgens <strong>die</strong> WAT (Hauptfleisch 1970) gedef<strong>in</strong>ieer word as “beweg<strong>in</strong>g of gang ondertoe”.<br />

Volgens Falconer (2005:2) het <strong>die</strong> Grieke <strong>die</strong> <strong>te</strong>rm katabasis (Latyn descensus ad <strong>in</strong>fernas)<br />

met<strong>af</strong>ories gebruik <strong>om</strong> spesifiek <strong>te</strong> verwys na <strong>die</strong> verhaal van ’n lewende persoon wat <strong>die</strong><br />

doderyk besoek het, en redelik ongeskonde <strong>te</strong>ruggekeer het na <strong>die</strong> land van <strong>die</strong> lewendes.<br />
