Met verwys<strong>in</strong>g na Kaja Silverman se boek Flesh of my flesh (2009), waar<strong>in</strong> sy <strong>in</strong>sig<strong>te</strong> oor<br />

relasionali<strong>te</strong>it, kuns<strong>te</strong>naarskap en <strong>die</strong> dood <strong>in</strong>dr<strong>in</strong>gend verken en ui<strong>te</strong>ensit aan <strong>die</strong> hand van<br />

<strong>die</strong> mi<strong>te</strong> van Orfeus en Euridike, betoog ek <strong>in</strong> <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> artikel dat Die benederyk b<strong>in</strong>ne <strong>die</strong><br />

<strong>te</strong>oretiese raamwerk van relasionali<strong>te</strong>it en retrovisie gelees kan word. Relasionali<strong>te</strong>it<br />

manifes<strong>te</strong>er <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> r<strong>om</strong>an eers<strong>te</strong>ns as ’n ontologiese verwantskap op persoonlike vlak tussen<br />

mense op grond van s<strong>te</strong>rflikheid. Katabasis maak op verskillende wyses ’n verskyn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong><br />

r<strong>om</strong>an, maar <strong>die</strong> opvallends<strong>te</strong> verwys<strong>in</strong>gs is deurgaans na S<strong>te</strong>faans Adendorff wat “<strong>die</strong><br />

duis<strong>te</strong>rnis <strong>af</strong>gegaan het en lank verlore was”. Daar word tweedens aangetoon dat Die<br />

benederyk <strong>te</strong>rselfdertyd ’n narratief-filosofiese bes<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g oor <strong>die</strong> aard, <strong>die</strong> waarde en funksie<br />

van kuns en <strong>die</strong> artistieke proses is. W<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rbach bes<strong>in</strong> by monde van <strong>die</strong> sentrale<br />

kuns<strong>te</strong>naarkarak<strong>te</strong>r, Aaron, wie se lewensverhaal ook getuig van ondergang en redd<strong>in</strong>g, oor<br />

<strong>die</strong> plek van <strong>die</strong> Suid-Afrikaanse kuns<strong>te</strong>naar b<strong>in</strong>ne ’n gro<strong>te</strong>r wêreldorde en sy verwantskap<br />

met voorgangerkuns<strong>te</strong>naars b<strong>in</strong>ne <strong>die</strong> kunstradisie. Sy onderneem saam met Aaron ’n reis<br />

deur <strong>die</strong> Wes<strong>te</strong>rse kunstradisie, en deur middel van retrovisie word talle dooie kuns<strong>te</strong>naars<br />

“lewend” gemaak, van wie Joseph Beuys en Francisco Goya <strong>die</strong> opvallends<strong>te</strong> is.<br />

Abstract<br />

A profound rem<strong>in</strong>der of mortality: catabasis, relationality and retrovision <strong>in</strong> Ingrid<br />

W<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rbach’s Die benederyk (2010)<br />

The aim of this article is to <strong>in</strong>dica<strong>te</strong> that Die benederyk (The underworld) may be read with<strong>in</strong><br />

the theoretical framework of catabasis, relationality and retrovision. My po<strong>in</strong>t of departure is<br />

that relationality manifests itself <strong>in</strong> two ways <strong>in</strong> Die benederyk, namely as an ontological<br />

relationship on a personal level between people (whether it be family relations or the bonds<br />

of friendship), and also as an ontological relationship between specific artists through the<br />

ages. With reference to Kaja Silverman’s book Flesh of my flesh (2009), but also referr<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Etty Mulder’s Freud and Orpheus (1987), a brief summary of the theoretical concepts of<br />

relationality, catabasis and retrovision will first be provided. It will be shown, furthermore,<br />
