Antjie Krog is bekend as grensverskuiwende dig<strong>te</strong>r, maar met <strong>die</strong> publikasie van<br />

Verweerskrif (2006) ontlok sy moontlik <strong>die</strong> hewigs<strong>te</strong> kritiek ooit <strong>in</strong> haar poëtiese loopbaan.<br />

Die kritiek sentreer op <strong>die</strong> uitdagende <strong>om</strong>slag, asook op onontg<strong>in</strong>de <strong>te</strong>mas <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> Afrikaanse<br />

digkuns: menopouse en <strong>die</strong> ouer vrou se seksuali<strong>te</strong>it. Uit talle kritici en lesers se men<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>die</strong> media blyk dat <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> taboe-deurbrek<strong>in</strong>gs nie slegs as digkuns gelees word nie, maar<br />

direk met <strong>die</strong> dig<strong>te</strong>r verb<strong>in</strong>d word. Die talle ooreenk<strong>om</strong>s<strong>te</strong> tussen <strong>die</strong> liriese “ek” <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong><br />

gedig<strong>te</strong> en <strong>die</strong> outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese “ek” van <strong>die</strong> dig<strong>te</strong>r dra by tot <strong>die</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rpretasie van Krog se<br />

verse as outobiogr<strong>af</strong>ies en is dus meer onts<strong>te</strong>llend vir <strong>die</strong>gene wat <strong>die</strong> <strong>te</strong>mas onder besprek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as taboe beskou. In <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> artikel word <strong>die</strong> outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese elemen<strong>te</strong>, soos verstaan deur <strong>die</strong><br />

“outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese pakt”, <strong>in</strong> Krog se verse ondersoek en word verskeie taboe-deurbrek<strong>in</strong>gs op<br />

taal- en <strong>te</strong>matiese vlak uitgelig. Philippe Lejeune (1995) se <strong>te</strong>rm outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese pakt dui op<br />

<strong>die</strong> <strong>in</strong>gebedde outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese kode, of<strong>te</strong>wel outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese elemen<strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong> ’n <strong>te</strong>ks, wat<br />

ooreens<strong>te</strong>m met <strong>die</strong> skrywer of dig<strong>te</strong>r. Wanneer dig<strong>te</strong>rs sulke elemen<strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong>bed <strong>in</strong> hul werk, is<br />

dit ’n uitnodig<strong>in</strong>g aan <strong>die</strong> leser <strong>om</strong> hul werk op meer as net ’n kunsvlak <strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rpre<strong>te</strong>er – dit is<br />

’n uitnodig<strong>in</strong>g tot ’n outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese les<strong>in</strong>g. Aangesien gedig<strong>te</strong> nie ewe veel outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese<br />

kenmerke weerspieël nie, en s<strong>om</strong>mige outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese merkers meer verhuld as ander is,<br />

onderskei ek tussen vier ka<strong>te</strong>gorieë: direk outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese, <strong>in</strong>direk outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese, universele<br />

en algemene gedig<strong>te</strong>. Vir <strong>die</strong> doel van <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong> artikel fokus ek op direk en <strong>in</strong>direk<br />

outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese gedig<strong>te</strong>. Die direk<strong>te</strong> variant bevat name of plekname wat met <strong>die</strong> dig<strong>te</strong>r<br />

skakel; gedig<strong>te</strong> wat deur ag<strong>te</strong>rgrondskennis van <strong>die</strong> dig<strong>te</strong>r se lewe ’n outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese<br />

dimensie verkry, heet <strong>in</strong>direk outobiogr<strong>af</strong>iese gedig<strong>te</strong>. Daar is eg<strong>te</strong>r talle nuanses <strong>in</strong> <strong>hier</strong><strong>die</strong><br />

ka<strong>te</strong>gorieë, weens dig<strong>te</strong>rlike vryheid en <strong>die</strong> onbepaalbaarheid van fei<strong>te</strong>. 3<br />

Abstract<br />

“I have a body, therefore I am”: Autobiographical elements <strong>in</strong> Antjie Krog’s Body<br />

bereft<br />

Antjie Krog is known as a groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g poet, but with the publication of Body bereft<br />

(2006) she elici<strong>te</strong>d possibly the most severe criticism <strong>in</strong> her poetic career. The criticism<br />

seems to be centred on the provocative cover as well as on unexplored themes <strong>in</strong> South<br />

African (especially Afrikaans) poetry: menopause and the older w<strong>om</strong>an's sexuality. Fr<strong>om</strong><br />

various critics’ and readers' op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>in</strong> the media it appears that this taboo-breach<strong>in</strong>g is not<br />

merely read as poetry, but is l<strong>in</strong>ked directly with the poet. The countless similarities between<br />
