9. SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS
The Institute has taken an active part in this field through the participation of its associates in national and
international meetings, and also by organizing and supporting seminars, workshops and courses in different
places. Through these activities, the Ivie hopes to make its head office, and the university departments and
institutions with which it collaborates, a regular meeting point for researchers, other specialists and social
institutions.
9.1. ORGANIZED BY THE IVIE
On January 11, as part of the activities organized by the Ivie and the BBVA Foundation, the seminar THE
CHALLENGES FACING SPANISH FIRMS: PRODUCTIVITY AND INNOVATION took place at the headquarters of
the University-Enterprise Foundation (ADEIT) in Valencia. The purpose of this seminar was to examine the
dynamics and factors that contribute to the proper functioning of enterprises, essential for the design of policies
aimed at transforming the productive fabric; as well as to analyze issues related to productivity and innovation
from a microeconomic perspective, i.e. considering firms as the unit of analysis and not sectoral aggregates.
The participants presented papers dealing with the major differences in productivity between firms, the
importance of different factors such as market structure and the deregulation and the relocation of activities for
their improvement. Special attention was also paid to factors influencing the level of innovation, the different
intensity of investment in ICT and differences in competitiveness at firm level. Ivie’s associate researcher Juan
Fernández de Guevara (Ivie, Universitat de València) was responsible for organizing the seminar which was
attended by the following experts:
