Confessions of ananonymous urbanexplorerTEXT AND PHOTOS BY MISUTERARETANakagusuku Kogen hotel in OkinawaIf there’s one time of year that’s perfectlysuited to the subculture of urban exploration,it’s Halloween. Every major ruin inJapan has its own ghost story or urbanlegend. Some stem from tragic, real-life incidents;others—like the Himuro Mansion—arepure fantasy. My interest in ruins has taken meto prefectures in Japan I never thought I’d visit, into buildings I was never supposed to enterand have adventures I will never forget. Overthe last six years, I’ve managed to avoid arrest, injury and confrontation. However, for those tempted to venture outon All Hallows’ Eve, I have a number of cautionarytales to share. My first haikyo trip on the outskirts of Saitamaprefecture was an embarrassingly paranoidexperience. Misjudging the amount of time itwould take to get to my location, I ended upwalking alone for over an hour down an isolatedcountry road. As the sun started to godown, the leaves on the ground seemed tostalk me—stopping exactly when I stopped;scuttling behind me only when I moved forward. When I finally reached my destination—arun-down love hotel—an unknown beast in theundergrowth continuously circled the buildingbut never showed itself. The whole experience was overwhelmingto the point I swore I’d never do it again. But Isoon realized that urban exploration is an experiencebest enjoyed in hindsight. As the fearbegan to wear off, and the photos of my explo-Abandoned residence in Naganoration circulated online, I was already thinkingabout my next destination.“Whatever you do, don’t get sucked into this,”my wife warned me. It was already too late.Visiting residential ruins is a line I’ve crossedand regretted. Even if you’re completely sure aresidence has been abandoned by its originalowner, there may still be some unofficialresidents living there. Such was the case inNagano, where I entered a broken residencewith a dubious new tenant. The first clue that I'd stepped into the wrongbuilding was a series of disjointed children’spictures scrawled on the sliding doors throughwhich I’d entered. The second: a giant knifepositioned next to a recently vacated sleepingbag. This was enough to see me scrambling outthe door and running down the road.Exploring ruins in a group can also be a lotof fun. Several years back, Michael John Grist, the explorer who gave me my first map, invitedme along on a road trip to the Izu Peninsula witha couple of his friends. Their good-humored camaraderiewas a stark contrast to the paranoiato which I’d grown accustomed, and if it weren’tfor them, I probably would have missed out onseeing one of Japan’s greatest ruins. So have a happy and exploratory Halloween. And as always: “Take only pictures; leaveonly footprints.”For more haikyo adventures visit:http://misuterareta.wordpress.comLINGO BOXYokai ( 妖 怪 ) = Spirit(s) or ghost(s)from Japanese folkloreYakubarai ( 厄 払 い) = exorcismHaikyo ( 廃 墟 ) = ruin(s)11

Theset is enough for two, but tumblers of a singlevariety (¥550 and up) are also available. We considered the five-dish option(¥1,000) but decided more exploring wasneeded. Sake firmly in hand, we set out forChiba to savor washed cheese rind pickledin sake kide izumi (¥520). With a sharp tastesurprisingly similar to blue cheese, it meltedgloriously on the tongue and proved a finecompanion for rice wine. From there, we ventured north to sampleFukushima’s pickled Pacific herring toppedwith Japanese pepper (¥520). The four piecesof fish that arrived were firm and well-flavored:sour and sweet with a hint of herring’sbitterness.Heading inland to Nagano, we surveyednatto mixed with umeboshi and Japanesemild ginger, or myoga (¥620). Served on asingle perilla leaf, it looked like alonely lump, but the tart and saltyplums with the soft ginger flavor ofmyoga dressed the big, firm beansup beautifully. We dashed south to Kagawa fora quiet culinary stop sampling theregion’s tofu (¥200). Served chilledwith a simple topping of negi (longonion) and myoga, the firm yet silkytofu needed just a pinch of salt orsoy sauce to pull all the flavors together. We carried on south to Okinawafor tofuyo (fermented tofu, ¥520).Dubbed the “challenge menu” itemof the evening, it came as a singlesmall chunk on a bamboo leaf. Thetiniest bit on a chopstick delivereda pungent sake kasu-like flavor ina creamy texture. We then jetted up to Osaka forminararu irikon (¥500) and seasonalohitashi, or blanched greens(¥420). Crunchy dried irikon(Osakan for dried baby sardines),konbu, sesame seeds and peanutsbathed in soy sauce and mirin effectivelyrepresented Japan’s famousport city. The small bowl of ohitashiarrived as a verdant spinach seasoned withlight dashi. We hopped west for a Toyama omelet(¥460)—thick and dense with a subtly sweetedge—with a second stopover in Naganofor more natto, which really is that good. Aquick turn south to Nagasaki brought a plateof warm and crunchy aji-fry (¥1,000) with cooljulienned cabbage. We finished in the far north of Hokkaidowith rice ball sets (¥360) of one umeboshiand one konbu each. Served warm and fresh, they were the perfect ending to a perfect trip.8F Hikarie, 2-21-1 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku.Shibuya. www.hikarie8.com/d47shokudoPhotos by Joan Bailey12

The owner andhead chef is a wonderful Vietnamese womanwho often comes out of the kitchen to make sureeveryone is enjoying their food. The menu is extensive, making ordering adaunting task. However, a few options standout, such as the Gòi Ngó Sen (¥800), a saladcombining lotus root, shrimp and pork, dressedwith a deliciously sweet and tangy fish sauce. The lotus root gives the salad a crunchy texturewhile the combination of the sauce, lemon andmint garnish provides a fresh crisp taste.Lovers of Vietnamese food will definitely beexcited for the Gòi Cuón (¥750), a spring rollthat consists of fresh ingredients such as herbs, cucumber, rice noodles, pork and shrimp—but isalso not deep fried. If you‘d like toenjoy a more traditional setting, the Mori-no-yu onsen is alsoavailable in the resort. There was a time when travel in Japan was uncommon;those who traveled were consideredstrange beings that could communicate withspirits. However, at the turn of the 17th century, that all changed, beginning with the openingof the Tokaido Road, which connected Edo(now Tokyo) to the country’s original capital,Kyoto. The journey led travelers through Hakone, which eventually transformed the hotspring town into one of Japan’s first traveldestinations. The first travelers to Hakone were daimyo,or provincial rulers, who used the Tokaido duringtheir journeys to and from Edo and Kyoto.Daimyo were carried along Tokaido Road inboxlike palanquins known as kago, which enabledthem to rest their legs.Yet, kagos were designed so that passengerssat stooped forward, and this caused tensionto build in their backs. Travel parties wouldstop at hot springs—known as onsen—to restand soak their sore muscles. It was from thepractice of these early travelers that Hakonereceived its allure of being the place to recuperateand relax. When the road was first upgraded, it wascovered with a thin layer of bamboo calledhakone-dake grown in the Hakone region. By1680, as the road became more heavily utilized, worn bamboo was replaced with a layerof pebbles packed below larger stones thatwas able to withstand rain. Travelers wishing tobathe in the hot springs would trek along thispath from Edo to Hakone carrying food along adistance of 82 kilometers in about three days, clad in straw sandals known as waraji. Evenhorses then wore straw shoes as iron was notyet used for such purposes. For those who wishto walk along the road and experience part ofthe pilgrimage that these early travelers embarkedupon, there’s a cedar-lined stretch onthe southern side of Lake Ashinoko betweenMoto-Hakone and Hakone-machi that leads toYumoto, the oldest and largest of the 16 onsenlocated in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. For those looking to delve further into thehistory of Hakone, there’s a replica checkpointnear Lake Ashinoko, which was completed in2007 and includes a watchtower, living quartersand a prison. These checkpoints werenecessary in the past, as they were used by officialsto screen travelers and inspect baggageat a time when travel permits were required, and women’s travel and the transport of weap-On Nov 3, the Hakone Daimyo Parade invitesparticipants to dress in full traditional attire, includingarmor and weapons, to march through Yumoto as partof a feudal procession.ons were restricted. fashion fixSHOWROOM SEASONBY SAMUEL THOMAS, FASHION EDITORTokyo Fashion Week has been and gone for the Spring/Summer 2015 season, but for those in the industry it’s far from over. Once the dust has settled fromthe shows, the real work begins as fashion buyers and media crews head tothe showrooms to see the actual clothes from the catwalk. If you want a peekbehind the curtain, this is where insiders get to place their private orders forthe season—usually at a substantial discount. So if you’ve ever wondered howindustry types manage a different outfit every day of the month, this might justbe your explanation. However, recently more and more brands have startedto extend this same courtesy to their best customers in the form of pre-orderexhibitions—so keep your eye out for those this season.ON POINTThe Happening was without a doubt the biggestunexpected success story to come out of thisseason’s Tokyo Fashion Week. The Happeninggroup—which is made up of a varied team of similarlyminded fashion designers, stylists and shopowners—originally made its mark by hijacking lastseason’s fashion show from Dresscamp, runninga guerrilla fashion show on the runway while theguests for the official show were being seated. For their second outing earlier this month, theytook their grassroots mentality to the public witha crowd-funded fashion show held in the hub ofHarajuku street fashion, LaForet.Under the remit of putting art back into fashion, designers Leonard Wong, Nyte, Garter andAraki Shiro threw wearability to the wind with aseries of outfits that wouldn’t look out of place inLady Gaga’s wardrobe. But even though theseoutfits might never be worn on Tokyo’s streets, the show was funded by the general public, indicatingthat even if the average man or womanmight not wear fashion on this scale, they certainlydesire to see it nonetheless. The HappeningSHOPPING STRATEGYShibuya department storeParco is in for a totalrebranding this winter. The consistentlypopular shoppinglocation has beenon a steady path towardmodernizationfor some time now, especiallyin comparison toits more traditional contemporaries—manyof whom have yet to create a functioning onlineshopping site. But Parco’s new trajectorypitches the store directly at the current generationof youth alienated by the conventionaldepartment store experience. Aimed clearlytoward so-called digital natives, the new Parcowill be social media and online ready, not leastbecause it will also become the public-facingHQ for Niconico Douga, the popular videosharing site.Parco’s path toward the youth vote beganin October 2012, when it devoted its entire fifthfloor to a pop culture-orientated space, featuringnot only fashion and anime crossover fashionfrom Cospa but also shops for hardcore fans, such as the flagship One Piece shop. This approachof melding youth fashion with its culturalcontext is key to winning over the generationraised on the internet, and if the attendance atthis month’s Shibuya Cultural Festival at Parco isany indication, it appears to be working.Courtesy of ParcoSTREET FOCUSJaponsim as a fashion genre is loosely describedas Western takes on Japanese aesthetics. Andwhile that may seem a fairly archaic concept in anever-more-globalized world, it’s still as relevantas ever thanks to it increasingly being Japanesefashionistas who attempt to mix said aesthetics, having been raised on a predominantly Westernfashion diet.Non-Japanese fans should aim to be cautious. If in doubt, stick to one piece of Japonica perensemble (as above) lest you segue into costume.Photo by Samuel ThomasFASHION CALENDAROct 17 | Macaronic Koenji OpensCult select shop Macaronic, responsiblefor stocking some of the coolestunderground brands in Tokyo, is makingthe move from Harajuku to Koenji, taking with it yet another piece ofHarajuku’s fashion cred in the process.www.macaronic.jpOct 19 | Tweed Run TokyoNow in its third iteration, the cyclingroute that takes in some of Tokyo’sfinest heritage fashion, art and foodcultural hotspots is back. moviesBY DON MORTONfeatured movieA MOSTWANTED MANDramatically understated but visually striking andintellectually suspenseful, this adaptation by AntonCorbijn (Control, The American) of the John leCarré novel takes a look at the ethical vagaries ofthwarting terrorism, and at the frequently melancholylives of those dedicated to the task. Whena severely abused Russian-Chechen immigrant(Grigoriy Dobrygin) surfaces in Hamburg seekingasylum, a variety of competing international intelligenceagencies begin to circle, suspecting he’sthere to claim his deceased father’s ill-gotten fortuneand do mischief. Going against this mindset is adisgraced German spymaster (an intense, nuancedPhilip Seymour Hoffman), who thinks the man isinnocent and can be better used to bag a wealthyIslamic philanthropist he suspects of financing terrorists.Robin Wright’s the creepy CIA presence,Willem Dafoe is excellent as a shady banker, anda miscast Rachel McAdams is out of her depth asa liberal lawyer. I enjoyed the book. And while itdoesn’t rate up there with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spyor The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, the authoris never less than compelling. You are right: asforeigners in Japan, our community is verysmall and our friendships overlap, which cancomplicate the situation.Finding people you like and maintainingfriendships can be challenging in anycountry or community. As foreignerswithout extended families and regularfriends, the friendships and relationshipswe make in Japan become even moreimportant.Your friend’s new acquaintance appearsto have added a stress to yourrelationship, and your ability to socializetogether. This has left youquestioning how best to respondto your friend and this new person. I can hearthat this person has many traits and behaviorsthat challenge your values and beliefs regardingacceptable behavior. These are oftenculturally defined and vary considerably. Forexample, someone from New York typicallybehaves very differently from a Japanese person, and also from a Greek person, and so on.Friendships—like any relationship—takework, and I am concerned that your feelingstoward the new acquaintance may damageyour existing friendship, and I can hear youcare about this friend. Our Lifeline counselorscan explore your concerns and help youto work through your feelings and optionsthat might work for you, should you meet theacquaintance again.Answer courtesy of TELL. RICHARDSForeign authors in Japan aren’t all writingabout shoguns and geisha, otaku culture orHarajuku fashion. Iain Maloney writes aboutplaces and eras dearer to his home. The Scottish author’s third and latest novel—andhis first to be published—First TimeSolo, is a tale of young, British men on the homefront in 1943 who learn to fly and play jazz. The settings of his stories also reflectthe writer’s environment—in particular, his current country of residence.“I’ve written a lot of short storiesset in Japan, and one day I hope tocollect them all into a book,” says theAberdeen-born Maloney, who movedto Japan with his wife in 2005.“The novel I wrote before [First TimeSolo], Dog Mountain, was set in Japanwith all Japanese characters. It wasabout political corruption and abuses of power—aswell as being a thriller with odd fantasyelements, like talking dogs.”Maloney’s writing has manifested in variousgenres of expression: short stories, poetry, haikuand articles on music, travel and literature. Buthis heart remains closer to writing novels.“Novels are where my passion lies,” saysMaloney. “I love the sprawl, the structural possibilities… the space that a novel gives you.“I’ve written four [novels], of which FirstTime Solo was the first to be published. Thefirst I wrote is too embarrassing to show anyone, the second was shortlisted for the 2013Dundee International Book Prize and thefourth will come out sometime [in 2015].”Maloney also harbors an interest in writing forthe screen and stage, but is first eyeing translatingworks by Japanese authors to bring theirworks to an international audience.NOVELSAREWHEREMYPASSIONLIES.”“Not enough contemporary writersare given exposure in the Englishliterary world. I’d love to bring outa book showcasing … lesser-knownJapanese writers like Ryuichiro Utsumiand Nao-Cola Yamazaki—andall the ones I’ve never even heard ofyet. There’s so much great literature inthis country that the rest of the worlddeserves to enjoy.”Asked about the trappings of writingstories with foreign characters or settings, the writer says it’s all too easy to fall into theusual clichés. “It takes a brave, imaginativeleap to free yourself from viewing a cultureas an outsider, and to believably inhabit thepsyche of someone from that culture, withall the different pressures and expectationsthat follow.”First Time Solo(Freight Books) hasbeen shortlisted forThe Guardian’s Notthe Booker Prize, and is available onAmazon (¥1,660).You can followIain Maloney athis website: www.iainmaloney.wordpress.com20

But if you want somethingmore personal and closer to home, youcan also check out small shōtengai (shoppingstreets), department stores and kids’s eikaiwaschools for event posters to see what kinds oflocal Halloween-y events are in the works.PUMPKIN PATCHERYSpeaking of Halloween-y, is there anything moreso than an orange orb lit from within? Skip thegreen kabocha and seek out a proper carvingpumpkin at farmers markets, florists, Costco oronline at purveyors like The Flying Pig and Rakuten. For a trip to a real pumpkin patch, you canlet your inner Linus out at Shin-Kiba’s YumenoshimaPark (http://meturl.com/pumpkinpatch), whichbrings in pumpkins from Ibaraki for frolicking fun(no taking them home, though).T-O-T DIYHalloween isn’t Halloween without kids trickor-treating,and hundreds of doorbell-ringerscan be found at Yoyogi-Uehara station and theShirokanedai, Moto-Azabu/Azabu Juban andTokyo Midtown areas, with businesses and evenprivate residences passing out the sweet stuff.Stick to houses with Halloween decorations, orjust follow the crowds.Trick-or-treating aficionados outside the metropolitancore have been known to set up theirown routes, both solo and in cooperation withschool and neighborhood friends. Simply makea list of interested families, draw up a basic mapwith participating houses marked (houses shouldbe decorated or labeled with a Halloween decal)and get some parents to act as chaperones. Some trick-or-treating groups charge a fee that’spooled to buy candy, which is then distributed toparticipating houses, while others put each housein charge of its own treats. Make sure Halloweennewbies understand that each kid only needs acandy or two, not intricately packaged gift bags!If you go it on your own, it means purchasingcandy and asking various neighbors tohand it out to your little ones, who will comeby at a predetermined time. While it’s not asmuch fun for the older crowd, for smaller kids(and elderly neighbors), candy and a cute, costumedmunchkin are the only things needed forsqueal-worthy satisfaction.PUMPKIN PURVEYORSThe Flying Pig (www.theflyingpig.com;search for “Halloween pumpkin”)Rakuten (www.rakuten.co.jp/wf-cartgift; Japanese)TOP COSTUME SHOPS1. MUSICREVAMPING THEVASELINESIndie legends bring a new albumand new lineup to JapanBY LESLIE LEE IIIIt was a foggy morning in Glasgow when Metropolistalked to Eugene Kelly of The Vaselines. But he had every reason to be cheery:V for Vaselines, the band’s new album, justcame out.The band, comprising Kelly and FrancesMcKee, had split just after releasing their firstalbum, Dum-Dum, in 1989. A copy found its wayto Kurt Cobain, prompting Nirvana to coverthree Vaselines songs; the defunct band wasthen elevated to cult status.Kelly and McKee found themselves playingtogether again—and enjoying it. They toured,re-released their old work and recorded theirsecond album, 2010’s Sex with an X.When asked how a third album came about,Kelly replies, “We just kept touring. As songwriters,we felt we had at least one more album in us.”The product, V, is a rowdy 35 minutes filledwith the band’s signature happy melodies andPhoto Courtesy of Sub Pop Recordsdark humor. “We just want to make short popsongs,” the Vaselines frontman states. “We’vegot short attention spans and we want to getit over with quickly.”And the new release has been garneringpositive responses. “I think people like therecord,” says Kelly. “It’s going to make themwant to come see us live.”The Vaselines will be returning to Japan inNovember, where longtime fans will hear newsongs and a new, more aggressive lineup.Read the full article athttp://meturl.com/vaselines● Nov 2-3, ¥7,900 (1 day) / ¥13,900 (2 days),Shin-Kiba Studio Coast. However, lesser known is moe, an emphasis on the emotional response to fictionalcharacters, as opposed to the characters themselves. The moe phenomenon has been misrepresented and stigmatized asbizarre overseas. But Patrick Galbraith, author of The Moé Manifesto, the world’s first English book on the attraction, sets the record straight.“Moe—which is the noun form of the verb moeru (which can mean‘to sprout’ or ‘to burn’)—is a response to fictional characters,” explainsthe American author. “It has the connotation of something that gets yourmotor running.”“There’s a lot of misunderstanding,” he says regarding fans of manga, anime and game. “It’s easy to look at images of Japanese men embracingpillows with their favorite characters and say, ‘Man, those guys are weird!’It’s a joke; we laugh and move on.”“The Moé Manifesto is an attempt to talk with people on the inside—creators, fans and critics of manga, anime and games in Japan—and gettheir perspective. It’s a manifesto in the sense that it’s a political statement:let’s take people and their lives seriously. Rather than point, laughand dismiss, let’s listen to them and respect that wemight not understand it immediately.”The moe style is characterized by exaggeratedfeatures, such as unnaturally huge eyes and nonexistentmouths and noses. First used in girls’s comics, these elements were introduced to emphasizecharacters’s emotional responses, and were lateradopted in men’s manga and anime, through whichthey became a standard.“One interesting result is … ‘anti-realism.’ Cutegirl characters don’t exactly look like real women. You can have characters that are attractive withoutany comparison to or connection to the ‘real’ thing.”But exactly how important is sexual fantasy to moe? “I posed thatquestion to Honda Toru,” Galbraith says of the moe guru. “He marrieda character from a PC game. He was attracted to her sexually, sure, but there’s something more to it. Honda describes that ‘somethingmore’ as love.”What surprised the author, though, was how robust the discourseon moe is in Japan. “Many of us can regonize the allure of comic bookand cartoon characters, but how often do you hear people talk aboutmarrying them—and what that might mean socially and economically?Or advocating [a] sexual orientation toward fictional characters?“What surprised me most was how serious people took their relationshipswith fictional characters, which were described to me as life-saving—a reason for living, or an alternative way of life.”http://meturl.com/moemanifesto23

RELATIONSHALLOWEEN DECORATION ETIQUETTEBY GRACE BUCHELE MINETAI foolishly assumed that because bakeries have Halloween-themed treats, karaoke parlors are decked out in pumpkins and skeletons and a nearbydepartment store has a huge “Happy Halloween!” banner hanging by theentrance, Japanese families celebrated Halloween.A couple days ago over dinner, I told my husband I wanted to decorateour house a bit for Halloween. He suggested the ¥100 store. Two hoursand ¥1,700 later, I walked out of Daiso with two bags full of awesome, cheap and gaudy Halloween decorations. Two days after that, my husband told me our outdoor Halloweendecorations were (apparently) scaring our neighbors. We moved the decorations back inside and peace was restored. ■ Grace Buchele Mineta is an author who blogs and draws comicsabout her daily life in Japan at www.HowIBecameTexan.com.♥ Love ¥ Money ♣ LuckhoroscopeBY CATHRYN MOEARIESMar 20-Apr 18 ♥♥ ¥¥ ♣♣♣♣♣TAURUSApr 19-May 19 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣♣♣GEMINIMay 20-Jun 20 ♥♥♥♥ ¥¥ ♣♣♣CANCERJun 21-Jul 21 ♥♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣♣♣♣Although part of you may be deliriouswith anticipation, do you also have aquiver of fear when it comes to a newpact you’ve made? StrangerDangerDANCING THE LINE BETWEENPARANOIA AND GOOD PARENTINGBY TANA PHILLIPSthe last wordIllustration by Christi Rochin‘STRANGERDANGER’NEVERREALLYTOOK ROOTIN JAPAN.AND THAT’SA GOODTHING.”WANTTO HAVETHE LASTWORD?Send your article to:editor@metropolisjapan.comShe was the worst mom in America. Everyonesaid so: internet bloggers, TVnews shows, radio talk DJs... Her name isLenore Skenazy and she created a mediafirestorm in the U.S. a few years ago withone dangerous, unconscionable act: shelet her nine-year-old son ride the subwayby himself.I wonder what those pundits andmommy bloggers would think of thetrains in Tokyo. Here, it’s perfectly commonfor young children to use publictransportation, walk to school andplay in parks by themselves. Yet thesesame acts in the United States aren’tjust frowned upon; they’re often consideredcriminal. The stories abound. On a cool Septemberday, a mother left her six-year-oldson in the backseat of her locked andparked car while she spent less than fiveminutes picking up one item from a store.A concerned citizen called the police andshe spent the next two years fightingcharges of negligence and contributingto the delinquency of a minor. Anothermother left her nine-year-old daughterplaying at a park around the corner whileshe worked her shift at McDonald’s. Thepark was only a couple of blocks fromtheir home, but a passerby called thepolice, who duly showed up at her workto take her into custody. In Japan, my children play in the parkby themselves all the time. They walk orride their bikes to school by themselves. They can go to their friends’s houseswithout supervision, provided they comehome when the streetlights turn on.It’s the kind of upbringing my husbandand I had—a kind of upbringing that hasall but disappeared in the U.S. No longeris a parent permitted to make decisionsabout his or her own child’s maturity leveland readiness for independence. Yetany stranger is qualified to make a judgmentabout their parenting and involvethe police and child protective serviceswithout a second glance. It’s different in Japan because it’s somuch safer here. Right?Japan is consistently ranked one ofthe safest countries in the world. However,as Skenazy likes to point out, violentcrime rates in the U.S. have beendeclining steadily over the past severaldecades. In fact, they’re at their lowestlevels since the early 1970s.The problem is that facts don’t seemto matter much. A prime example: AsHalloween arrives, American parentswill be meticulously checking their children’scandy for suspicious-lookingpieces. But most won’t be aware thatthe joy and simplicity of the holidaywere permanently tainted by just oneincident back in 1974, when RonaldClark O’Bryan of Deer Park, Texas, killed his son by inserting cyanidelacedPixy Stix into his Halloween haul.As a result of this targeted attack—though disguised to look random, itwas for the insurance money; parentsnow worry that every block of candygiversmight hide some stranger out toharm their kids. The idea of “stranger danger” neverreally took root in Japan. And that’s a goodthing, because the U.S.’ stranger dangercampaign has turned out to be one of themost successful and harmful campaigns inexistence. The truth is that crimes againstchildren are most often perpetrated bysomeone close to the child: a family friend,a teacher, a family member—someone thechild knows and trusts.Even though I know all of this—eventhough I think of myself as a reasonable, logical parent—I don’t allow my childrenthe same freedoms in the U.S. thatthey’re afforded here. Forget going to thestore by themselves; back home I start topanic if they’re not in the same aisle as mein the grocery store. And even if I don’tpanic myself, there’s still the concern ofbeing seen as a bad parent for treatingmy children the same in one country asin another.Maybe by the time we leave Japan,my parenting practices and confidencewill have matured to the point that I’llbe able to trust my kids and my owninstincts. Maybe by then the U.S. willhave gotten a grip on its neuroses andlet parents make reasonable decisionsabout what their children are old andmature enough to handle. Or maybe bythen my children will just be so old I’ll nolonger have to worry about these thingsin the first place.■ Tana Phillips blogs about her (mis)adventures in Japan—and her far moreharrowing adventures raising four kids—atjapanicked.comThe views expressed in “The Last Word” are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the position or opinions of Japan Partnership Co.
