18generic names are economically important, and the usage of such names has deep traditions(e.g., Rubus L. – gervuogë, avietë, tekðë, katuogë).The usage of certain Lithuanian generic names for naming of species were analysed, and solutions for their standardisation were proposed. Widely used traditional generic namesshould be applied as names of infrageneric taxa (subgenera, sections, subsections; functionallythey are equal to the generic name), whereas Lithuanian name of the genus should beselected taking into account generic name used for its type species. Uninominal names ofspecies should be replaced with binary names, but some of these traditional uninominalscan be used as generalised names for cultivated plants or their products. It would be purposeful to create a code of Lithuanian botanical nomenclature thatshould include general principles and rules of plant naming as well as examples and exceptions.Gautas: 2004 m. kovo 18 d.Priimtas: 2004 m. balandþio 26 d.Received: March 18, 2004Accepted: April 26, 2004
