BundinienėSummaryIt is discussed in the article the experiments of field vegetable investigation carried out atthe Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 1989–2007. There were fulfilled field, vegetation, andproduction experiments and various laboratory investigations. Dry and soluble, monomial andcomplex mineral fertilizers were used in investigations, the main and additional fertilizationsthrough leaves were carried out.All the nitrogen fertilizers increased the productivity of the investigated vegetables andmedicinal herbs. The rates of nitrogen fertilizers for vegetables are calculated basing on theamount of mineral nitrogen in soil. In order to establish nitrogen rates for carrot and cabbagesoil samples were taken from 0–60 cm, for red beet and onion – from 0–40 cm soil layers. Nminand Nfertilizers sum for cabbage – 300, red beet – 170, carrot – 120 and onion – 100 kg ha -1 .The optimal nitrogen rate for cabbage is N 180, in soils rich with phosphorus and potassium –N 120, red beet – N 90, onion – N 30kg ha -1 .The amount of nitrates in vegetable depends on physiological processes, which take placein the plant, agroclimatic and agrotechnical factors. The additional fertilization through leaves increased red beet and carrot yield and improvedproduction storability.Nitrogen fertilizers didn’t influence chemical composition, the quality and quantity ofessential oils of medicinal sage, second year medicinal thyme and first year peppermint.Key words: vegetable, mineral fertilizers, mineral nitrogen in the soil, nitrates, organiccompounds, fertilization through leaves, medicinal herbs.228
