SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES. 2008. 27(3).Development of apple tree orchard constructions in Lithuaniaduring recent 20 yearsN. UselisSummaryDuring 1988–2008 because of exhaustive, versatile scientific investigations trade apple treeorchard constructions in Lithuania essentially changed. In trade apple tree orchard from sparse, high apple trees on seed rootstocks and high crowns of thin branches there was passed to denseand very dense dwarf orchards with spindle crowns of various modifications. During this periodof twenty years there was further investigated apple tree growth vigour, their physiological processes, endurance, productivity, and fruit quality. There were carried out complex investigationsof the combinations of planting schemes and fruit tree forms and evaluated apple tree cultivarson semi-dwarf and dwarf rootstocks, which became ever more popular in our country. Up to thisperiod apple tree cultivars were investigated only on high seed rootstocks. Scientific investigationsand production experience of recent years showed that it is possible to grow in Lithuaniaapple trees of various cultivars on dwarf B.396, P 60 and low grafted M.9 rootstocks, plantingthem at a space of 4–3.5 × 1.25–0.75 m and training from simple spindles to superspindles. It isnecessary to base the further intensification of trade horticulture on the management of the growthand yielding of such fruit trees. This is especially important in the years when yield is too smallor too big. For this reason in the intensive dwarf orchards there were started investigations of thecomplex of technological means, which allow to control the balance of apple tree growth andyielding and to optimize fruit quality in order to guarantee every year fruits of excellent quality.Key words: apple trees, crown forms, planting schemes, investigation of cultivars, growth, yielding, productivity.107
