SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES.2006. 25(1). 199-206.DYNAMICS AND ROLE OF CARBOHYDRATES IN COMMONCARAWAY DURING DIFFERENT FLOWERING INITIATION STAGESG. Samuolienë, P. DuchovskisSummaryThis study was aimed on investigation of carbohydrates dynamic and role incommon caraway (Carum carvi L.) during different flowering initiation stages. Theprocess of common caraway flowering initiation and morphogenesis was studied in aphytotron facility. Different level of development is needed for photo- andthermoinduction of caraway. 9 leaves in rosette are needed to complete the juvenileperiod. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with refractive indexdetection was used for separation and determination of fructose, glucose, galactose, sucrose and maltose. Conditions of photo and thermoperiod during flowering induction:EXP2 – 8 hr and 4°C, EXP3 – 16 hr and 4°C, EXP4 – 8 hr and 21/16°C, EXP5 – 16 hrand 21/16°C.Our results showed that under dark treatment both in caraway with 7 and 9 leavesin rosette did not develop at all and rotted away. The highest sugars concentrations weredetected during evocation stage I, the lowest levels of mono- and disaccharides werestored during flower initiation and differentiation in all treatments. According to ourdata higher levels of fructose and glucose were measured when concentrations ofdisaccharides were lower.Thermoinduction is more important than influence of photoinduction for thedevelopment of common caraway. The best generative development was noticed whenplants were treated under low temperature and long day photoperiod. The ratio ofinvestigated carbohydrates influence common caraway flowering initiation processes. It was noticed the importance of sucrose during evocation processes.Key words: caraway, carbohydrates, evocation, flowering initiation.206
