ŠikšnianasSummaryPlant anthocyanins are effective protective substances with antioxidant mode of action.However, their chemical composition varies significantly not only in different plants, but even indifferent cultivars of the same plant species. The aim of our work was to show that classic testsystem– meristematical cells of root tips of Allium cepa – may be effectively used for screeningdifferences of biological activity of anthocyanins, extracted from berries of different black currantcultivars. The high sensitivity of Allium-test has been proved by comparative examination ofanthocyanins, extracted from berries of different black currant cultivars – ‘Joniniai’, ‘Kriviai’60
and ‘Ben Tirran’. It was shown that degree of mitotic activity stimulation and anthocyanins’influence on mitotic phases depend upon the source and concentration of anthocyanins. Thehigher mitotic activity and delayed mitosis phases (concentration of cells in prophase) may beconsidered as protective effects.Key words: anthocyanins, biological activity, black currants, cultivars, Allium cepa,meristematical cells, mitotic activity, phases of mitosis.61
