Margarita ·imelionytòLining of Oil Painting on Canvas with Gauze and Acrylic Resin A-45KThe restoration practice of painting witnesses some cases when the back of thepicture contains certain important information. When lining by means of traditionalmethods, the authentic information is hidden under the glued lining. Importantdata is usually transferred: coppied on the lined canvas using carbon-paper, rewrittenin Indian ink or watercolour. When restoring the painting Still Life (oil on paper, Ap 13261) by J. VienoÏinskis(1886–1960) from the collections of the Lithuanian Art Museum, it was discoveredthat the back of the painting contained a drawing in carbon of the torso of anancient sculpture. The restoration council decided to preserve it.We chose a non-traditional lining method on a transparent gauze, instead of thefish glue used the acrylic resin A-45K – the copolymer of vinyl acetate, butylacrilateand acrylic acid. The mentioned lining method is more advantageous becausedue to the consolidation of the ground of the painting – canvas with transparentfabric, the drawing on the back of the painting remained clearly visible. The method, previously exploited for the consolidation of textile under restoration, proved to be suitable for the restoration of painting.60 / TYRINñ JIMAI
